Chef Sam Buchanan
Please welcome our new Executive Chef, Sam Buchanan. He has been in the
restaurant/hospitality industry for 24 years. He started as a young 18-year-old
in a French/American/Southern style bistro named the Green Bottle Grill in
Huntsville, Al. Sam’s father recommended The Culinary Institute of America in
Hyde Park, NY to him, which he attended in the late winter 1994 and graduated
with honors in 1996. Sam flew to Yountville, California where his first job was
with The French Laundry and his mentor was Chef Thomas Keller. Chef Thom-
as was a great mentor and is one of his inspirations still to this day. Sam worked
there in the summer of 1997. Michael Ruhlman a great culinary writer was liv-
ing behind the restaurant writing one of his first books at the time. Sam then
moved to Birmingham, AL and started a position with the Hot and Hot Fish
Club in 1999 as Sous Chef. His mentoring chef was Frank Sitt, a Cullman native
who defined the culinary expectations for what we now know as Southern fine
dining here in Alabama. At that time, Sam took the opportunity to go to New
York to do a James Beard dinner. He has also staged at Le Bernadin in N.Y.
with Chef Eric Ripert in 1999 and has worked with Grant Achatz from Alinea in
Chicago. Sam recently moved from Nashville, TN where he was the Executive
Chef at Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club and most recently at Watermark Res-
taurant in the very trendy area of downtown Nashville known as ‘The Gulch’. Sam has been a member of or partici-
pated in Share our Strength, Meals on Wheels, Mid- south Food Bank, Farm Aid, Harvest of Huntsville, & March of
Dimes. Sam most recently won The Best Wood Fired Grilled Steak in Williamson County, Tennessee 2016 “Style
Home Page”. Sam has been married to his wife Angie for 17 years and they have a 14-year-old son, Mark. Sam’s
hobbies are gardening, camping, the outdoors and church activities. He is looking forward to being here and putting
Burningtree Country Club on the map not only for the great golf but for the best dining experience in northern Ala-
bama!
Welcome Chef Sam!!
From you Burningtree Staff
and Members!!

New Tee Signs
As many of you know, I am not a big fan of tee signs. I’m not a fan of any clutter really (signs,
ballwashers, posts, ropes, etc). I wanted to remove tee signs completely, but unless we operate
completely as a private course (no weekly outside outings), they are somewhat necessary. So
as I mentioned earlier in the year, I worked out a deal to replace our signs.
Our old signs were rotting, cracking, ballwashers falling off, dirty looking, too large, and out-
dated. Hopefully, the new signs are an improvement. I wanted a slimmer, cleaner look, while
also being more functional. So what are the differences? The new posts are half the size of the
old post, equaling a slimmer look. The color scheme is white on white for a cleaner look as op-
posed to the beige/tan color. The tee yardages and logo have been updated. The ballwashers are
now on separate posts and behind the signs (except for 2, 14 face the sides and 18 is back-
wards) and these posts will be capped in winter when ballwashers are not out. Ballwashers are
only on even numbered holes. Ideally, I would like to have only a few ballwashers hidden
throughout the course, but that would also go along with removing all signs. Per the survey re-
sults I took this year, 32% of people (the leading response) said they never use ballwashers.
And 63% said they would prefer one every 2 or 3 holes. So, we have one every other hole. Fi-
nally, we concreted the bases in the ground. This was actually not done correctly to serve it’s
main purpose, but more on that in a minute. The concrete also helps to secure the lighter, slim-
mer material in place.
I will once again state just for the record my dislike of all signs, but I do believe these signs are
an improvement on what we had in place. I hope you all agree as well. With that being said,
the company will actually be coming back out to re-do most of these signs. They were not in-
stalled the way we agreed upon. The concrete bases are supposed to be level with the ground
so that our equipment can mow over the top of the bases (eliminating the need for weedeating
around the signs). Only 17 and 18 were done this way, and 18 was set backwards to where the
ballwasher is in front of the sign. The owner of the company has promised to re-do these bases
within 45 days. Hopefully, that will get taken care of soon and everything will be correct! The
two hole location signs on one and ten, will remain as they are. I hope to redo or at least level
the parking lot signs this fall.

MGA News
The skills challenge for the September MGA meeting was putting to four holes on
the practice green. 11 different members joined the competition. Mike Gorius
won first place with a 6, for $53. Three tied for second with a score of 7 including
Erik Aviles, Sam Murphy, and Dwight Potter. Erik sank the first playoff putt, for
the $35 prize. Bill Shelton won the raffle jackpot for a $120.00 take away.
Earl Morris was introduced as a new member. As a basketball coach for Austin
High back in the day, he won three consecutive State Championships. Lou Nanny
was introduced as a guest, visiting from Pensacola.
The MGA and WGA played a scramble on Monday the 4th of September (Labor
Day). This was a scramble event with foursomes made up by Jim of WGA/MGA
members. We had tee times starting at 11:00 and there were burgers and hotdogs
available on the patio after play. The MGA kicked in $50.00 for prize money to
the winning teams.
We also have a scheduled outing for couples (Guys and Dolls or Couples Golf)
each month usually on the 3rd Sunday of the month at 12:30 with a shotgun start.
Couples play together and Jim will pair two couples together, with a team handi-
cap, to make a foursome for whatever game we decide to play (sometimes a scram-
ble or best ball or other variations). The next Couples Golf will be Sunday Octo-
ber 15th.
Remember the next MGA meeting is Thursday October the 12th. The MGA annu-
al Christmas Party will be December 14th and will be a Toys for Tots event again
this year. Let’s support our club and these events!

WGA News
We started off September with our MGA-WGA Scramble on Labor Day. It was a beautiful day for golf. We had six teams, made up of two men and two women. The winners were the team of Keith Heidecker, Ron Garmon, Joy Mills and Geri Knable. Coming in second were Mike Henry, Walter Mills, Deb Peppers and Bobbie Perrin. Congratulations to all!
On September 7 we had our ABCD Scramble. We did not have a large group to participate but we had lots of fun. The winners were Joy Mills, Norma Looney, Delores Teague and Geri Knable. Joy and Geri are racking up this month, way to go ladies!! Our 50/50 winner was Betty Byars. We enjoyed a wonderful salad bar lunch and a “to die for” chocolate cake for dessert.
I can’t believe our Golf season is soon coming to an end. Our last WGA tournament will be Member-Member on October 18-19. Weety and Mike Vickery have so graciously agreed to host our party this year. It will be Wednesday, the night of the 18th. .
We are having some lovely early fall like weather. Come on out and enjoy some great golfing days.
We offer our sincere sympathy to, one of our own, Cheryl Solvik in the death of her mother.

Craig's style of instruction/coaching is based on The Golfing Ma-
chine which is driven on teaching a player the proper pivot, ball
position and getting the club on plane. He also believes balance
and rhythm are imperative in the golf swing to produce consistent
impact alignments. He does not teach one single method but
rather evaluates a players body and physical makeup to build a
swinging motion suitable for each golfer. A player can not do
what they are physically unable to do.
