The form developed through interlocking traingular pat-terns that seemed to tumble down the steep landscape to end at a point facing the lake. The personal appeal of de-signing residential projects or community projects be-came apparent through this project , and has captured my attention ever since the completion of this project.

This was an ongoing project that had been worked on by both Spring and Fall semesters of the year above and the Fall semester of this year. St. Lukes Episcopal church was being moved back to its original site at Old Cahawba and the Rural Studio was hired to move and reconstruct the church. I was involved in the semester that was to put the structure back on the church including the arches.

Working through form, plan, and structure, this project was created. The idea was to create one main sculptural piece that would point in the direction of the historic section of Co-lumbus so that the extremely modern form would also re-flect on the past. Incorporat-ing past, present and future.
The form was developed through many sketches, mod-els, and structural studies. The plan was then developed from the form. The main sculptural element became the entry atri-um, the long arm of the build-ing lent itself to the historical section of the museum and the circular arm lent iself to the sci-ence section of the museum.

The project was placed on a whole city block in North-ern Chicago, IL. The difficult program included residen-tial units, a health club, park-ing, performance venue, and retail space. The project was inspired by the high activity of the neighborhood and the movement the site created.
The performance area of the project was very important in keeping the casual but fun envi-ronment of the area. The project incorporated the performance area by sinking in the corner and providing a small stage area, seating area, and general hang out space for people walk-ing by and street performers.
Because of the complex form, the residential section was kept as simple as possible with one and two bedroom apartments separated with a single corridor.

The Piagge is a surrounding suburb of Florence, Italy that has been the subject of many urban studies. Although many attempts have been made to re-vitalize the area, none of them have been a success.
GianCarlo de Carlo was a fa-mous master planner that de-veloped the overall masterplan for the district. As a team we studied his ideas, built upon the ones we agreed on, and came up with new suggestions for our distinct area within the neigh-borhood.

The studio was broken up into teams that studied different ar-eas of the Piagge neighborhood. I was on the team that focused on the area surrounding the In-diano Bridge, the main access across the area. A large part of the project was designing the landscape that was within the right of way of the nearby cem-etary, the rail tracks, and the Arno river.
The program included mixed use buildings, a library, a youth hostel, and public administra-tion buildings. This page focus-es on the mixed use residential buildings that were developed.
The part of the design that I was given was the youth hostel. I wanted to create this twisted fa-cade that faced out towards the park and allowed for each room to have its own balcony. The hostel accomodated around 60 people.

The Stockholm Public Library designed by Gunnar Asplund is a monumental symbol of Stock-holm. It was important to have a clear understanding of the at-titude one would want to take towards the building when cre-ating the addition.
I wanted to give respect to the original library by creating an architecture that would frame the building. I began by ex-truding out one of the reading rooms to emphasize the move-ment of the building. I also cre-ated an administrative build-ing that would continue the circle in a square diagram of the building. The center piece of the design was the cube. The pur-pose of the cube was to create this object in a courtyard that would draw people in. Within the cube, a hanging form would frame views out to the rest of Stockholm and its Library.

The drawing was a part of light-ing studies done in the foun-dation unit studio during the drawing section of that year. Each student was assigned an architect and then had to choose an interior view of one of their buildings to study. This was an Alvar Aalto build-ing in Finland. The drawing took approximately 60 hours to complete as it was to show an extreme amount of detail.
