Welcome
Congratulations and welcome to Cindy Johnston
who will be starting as principal at Campbell Town
next term. I look forward to working with Cindy
and continuing our involvement with Campbell
Town.
Challenging Weather
The last week has certainly been challenging for
many families with severe flooding in the local re-
gion. Thank you to all families who responded posi-
tively to the situation, particularly on the Tuesday
and Wednesday when the school was required to close. It was reassuring to see the quick response
from parents and carers to the messages of closure
and making efforts to collect children as soon as
possible. Thank you for your support with this.
School Cross Country
Well done to all students from Kinder to Grade 10
who participated in the School Cross Country event
on 2nd June. It was wonderful to see all students
competing to the best of their ability and parents
and family members encouraging their children.
Thank you to the parent volunteers who supported
and assisted during the carnival. Well done to the
Health and Physical Education teachers who had
prepared the students for the event. Thank you to
our grounds staff, David Blair, who had also pre-
pared and marked the track for students.
Campbell Town Show
Well done to the 7/8 and 9/10 Agricultural Studies
classes as well as the School Sheep Handling Team
for the efforts in the lead up to and at the Campbell
Town Show. Lots of work has gone into preparing
the classes to compete in the show, lead expertly by
Jill Bennett and assisted by Nick Goss. There were a
number of students who achieved excellent individu-
al as well as team results. Well done to all involved.
Staffing Appointments
Congratulations and welcome to Daniel Davis who will be joining the Cressy Teaching Staff for the re-
mainder of Term 2 and 3. Daniel will be working

Campbell Town Show Report
Monday 23rd May - 7/8 Agricultural Studies A with James Viney and Jacob Skeggs travelled to Campbell Town to help the
organising committee set up for the show. Students did a variety of tasks and were recognised for the quality of their
efforts.
Friday 3rd June - School Wool Handling Competition
The 9/10 Agricultural Studies class travelled to Campbell Town for the first day of the annual show to compete in the
School Wool Handling Competition. Competition is tough, amongst the 5 schools competing – Oatlands, Bothwell, Jordan
River, Campbell Town and Cressy. There were 48 students involved in the competition, the following 8 competing for
Cressy District High School: Courtney Ricketts, James Viney, Brad Graham, Bailey Freeman, Rosie Kiriona Hodge, Kaytee
Martin, Kim Scott and Saige Venn Evans. A very big congratulations to Brad and Bailey who came 2nd, and Kim and Saige who
were 3rd. Great team work was evident, as well as skills learnt in the workshops held with Jack Monks and Mel Morris.
Thank you to Mel and Jack, from AWI, for their help and running a great competition for students.
Saturday 4th June - Wool Judging and Sheep Showing
Bailey Freeman, Brad Graham and Alwyn Brazendale entered the Junior Wool Judging Competition. Brave move as none
have had any training in this field, especially Alwynwho hadn’t attended the shearing shed workshops either. Congratulation
to them all for having a go. The only way to learn. Bailey was placed 2nd and Alwyn 3rd. Well done boys.
It was the first outing this year for the Sheep Handling Team and they are to be congratulated on their commitment to
preparing the animals. There is still lots to learn but a great team effort. The Team looked fabulous in the new shirts.
Thanky ou to TP Jones and the Freeman family for allowing us to purchase the shirts.
Also thank you to Terry Connell for his support of the team and feedback, and to Nick Goss for the wonderful job he does
of ensuring the sheep are up to show standard, and continuing to improve our sheep’s genetics.

Newstead College Visit 26th May 2016
Grade 10 students attended an ‘authentic
transition’ day, immersing themselves
within classes with Grades 11/12
students. Students thoroughly enjoyed
the experience, not to mention the
opportunity to eat hot chips for recess!
We were very impressed with the
student’s maturity and autonomy
displayed throughout the day. Feedback
from Newstead staff indicated that they
would be thrilled to have CDHS students
continue their education at Newstead in
2017.

School References
In years gone by schools provided written references for students at the completion of Grade 10. In recent
years this practice has been discontinued by High Schools in Tasmania as employers now require job applicants to nominate referees who they will then contact for a verbal or written report. As a result of these changes
Cressy District High School plans to no longer provide each Grade 10 students with a written reference. If
students require a referee when applying for a position, they are encouraged to seek the support of school
staff.
Any parents/guardians with comments or questions are asked to contact me at school by Friday July 22.

What to do if your child is too sick to go to school
Did you know?
If your child suffers from an illness that is infectious, contagious or harmful to others at the school, you should
keep your child at home until they are better.
It is in the best interests of your child and other children in the school whose health could also be affected.
What to do?
If your child is sick and needs to stay home from school, you should contact the school to let them know. The
school may ask for information from your doctor.
You may need to seek medical advice for treatment or prevention options for your child if they become sick or
infected.
The best place for your child to be if they are unwell is at home.

Science and Engineering Challenge
30 Grade 10 students travelled to the University at Newnham on the 24th
May to compete in the Science and Engineering challenge. Students work
in teams to complete challenging tasks which require team work, perse-
verance and problem solving skills.
Challenges are made up of full day tasks or two half day challenges. Saige,
Jessie-Lea and Taylor constructed ‘furniture’ in the flat pack challenge
which was tested for strength by different weights. Mission to Mars was
completed by Brodie, Jesse, Corey and Tom and involved constructing a
buggy to travel the surface of Mars using a suspension system. The Hover
Frenzy crew of Lachlan, Michael, Lachie and Coen spent the day building a
hover craft which had to circumnavigate a series of challenges.
Half day activities meant that teams had 2 challenges to complete. Rosie,
Patrick, Jordan and Samuel worked together in the morning on the Helter
Skelter, where they constructed a tower designed to carry a load during
an earthquake. At lunchtime they swapped with Declan, Caitlin, Saige and
Baiden to complete the ElectraCity. This task has a series of tasks where
power is supplied to different parts of a region.
Mackenzie, Ellie, Jack and Will started the day building a prosthetic hand in
the Grasping at Straws. At lunch they swapped with Renae, Brittany and
April to develop networks to join a series of points in the most efficient
way possible. The higher the efficiency of linkage (i.e. minimum travel dis-
tance) the more points your team earns.
The finale of the day is the testing of the bridges. This year’s bridge was
built by Harrison, Jakeb, Bayley and Kara. They had an original design and
showed determination in completing their design.
Students must be congratulated on their behaviour and the way they
worked together. A team effort is required to complete tasks and
students persevered and achieved great results.
