ruce Leon Shelley was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on BDecember 20, 1927. He grew up in Evansville, Indiana, enduring severe poverty during the Great Depression.
His mother, Mabel Travers Shelley raised her two children, Bruce and Marge, to know the gospel. Bruce received Christ as his Savior during his high school years. He enlisted in the army and served in the occupational forces in Japan in the late 1940s, where a chaplain's influence eventually led him to Columbia Bible College. There he met a southern belle named Mary Harrington who agreed to marry him in 1952.
In 1957, after further education at Fuller Seminary in California and the University of Iowa, he was asked by Dr. Ray Buker and Dr. Vernon Grounds to join the faculty of the Conservative Baptist Theological Seminary in Denver as Professor of Church History.
For the rest of his earthly life, he taught and mentored students, raised a family of three children (Marshall, David and Karen) and eleven grandchildren, and served the Lord Jesus Christ.
