Electrical power quoted depends on alternator make. Power and consumption may vary according to set-up conditions. Engines comply with the World Bank guide- lines for thermal power plants. The stated consumption figures refer to the above-mentioned ISO reference conditions. The heat rate for Diesel operation refers to fuel oil with a lower caloric value (LHV) of 42,700 kJ/kg. The heat rate for gas operation to a LHV of 28 MJ/Nm3.
Ratings are given with a tolerance of +5% and without engine-driven pumps. Figures for gas engines refer to natural gas with a methane number higher than 80.
The specific lube oil consumption is specified at MCR with a tolerance of 20%.

Definitions
General
The L+V51/60DF engine from MAN Diesel
is a dual-fuel engine that converts liquid
fuel (“Diesel operation”) or natural gas
into electrical power efficiently and with
low emissions.
The possibility to switch over seamlessly
from gas to Diesel operation and vice
versa allows multiple applications with
a variety of fuels.
Fuels
The 51/60DF engine is designed for
operation with liquid and gaseous fuels.
In liquid fuel operation, the 51/60DF
engine can be operated with HFO with
a viscosity of up to 700 mm²/s (cSt) at
50° C.
L+V51/60DF – “The reliable one”
A synonym for the highest output combined with optimum flexibility.
The output of this power pack is between 8,560 and 17,550 kWe.
7L 51/60DF
It is designed for fuel qualities specified
in CIMAC 003 H/K700/DIN ISO 817.
With liquid fuels, continuous HFO
operation is possible between 0%
and 100% load.
For gas operation, the gaseous fuel must comply with the latest valid MAN Diesel quality requirements. For lower methane numbers, MAN Diesel is prepared to deliver well- adapted solutions.

Modern and innovative technology
Engine frame
Rigid housing of single-cast monobloc
construction, strengthened by tie bolts
running from the suspended main
bearing through to the top edge of
the engine frame and from the cylinder
head through to the intermediate
bottom.
Cylinder liner
Thick-walled design isolated from
external deformation, resulting in
optimum running conditions for the
piston.
Cylinder head
Combustion chamber geometry
optimised for combustion of gas
and Diesel / HFO. Atomisation of the
injection spray – without obstacles for
both operating modes – promotes very
good air-fuel ratio for optimum com-
bustion.
Rocker arm casing
Weight-reduced design facilitating
fast removal for overhaul and service
of injection nozzles in gas and Diesel /
HFO operation.
Stepped piston
Forged, dimensionally stable steel
crown (with shaker cooling by oil),
made from high-grade materials with
skirt in nodular graphite iron.
Chromium ceramic coating of the
first piston ring with highly resistant
ceramic particles in the ring surface,
resulting in low wear of ring and liner.
Connecting rod and bearing
Optimised “marine head” design to
allow piston overhaul without removal
of the connecting rod bearing cap.
Specially designed bearing shells in
the connecting rod for increased
reliability.
Valves
Exhaust gas valves with propellers on
the shaft for self-turning effect in the
exhaust gas stream and seating in
armoured, water-cooled valve seats,
resulting in low valve temperatures.
The inlet valves are equipped with
Rotocap mechanical rotators.
Injection
For operation with liquid fuels, high
pressure injection with improved
atomisation for combustion of fuel with
the lowest, but still acceptable, qualities
of HFO. In gas operation, ignition by
injection of pilot fuel through a common
rail injection system.
Short description of major engine parts
All engine parts are designed and constructed with
the aim of achieving the highest reliability, ease of
maintenance and longest possible TBOs*. The following
components are produced at our own factory:
* TBO = Time Between Overhaul
6
MAN Diesel turbocharging system
Optimum design of constant pressure
turbocharging system with state-of-
the-art MAN Diesel turbochargers of
the TCA series featuring long-bearing
TBOs. Thorough combustion with very
low residues and low thermal stress for
the combustion-chamber components,
high efficiency at full and partial loads
results in substantial air surplus.
The very high efficiency of the turbo-
charger at low pressure ratios results
in good part load operation.
Both V and inline (L) 51/60DF engines
are charged by a single TCA turbo-
charger with the advantage that only
one common exhaust gas pipe is
required for all cylinders.
Service-friendly design
Hydraulic tools used for tightening and
loosening cylinder head nuts; clamps
with quick release fasteners and/or
clamp and plug connectors; gener-
ously sized access covers; hydraulic
tools for crankshaft bearings and big
end bearings; sleeve spring vibration
damper is practically maintenance-free.
SaCoS
The 51/60DF engine is equipped with
the safety and control system SaCoS-
DF. SaCoS-DF guarantees reliable en-
gine operation in Diesel and gas mode
with an optimum operation range
between knocking and misfiring in gas
operation. All cylinders are regulated
individually. In Diesel mode, control is
based on the tried and tested engine
management of the MAN Diesel medium-
speed Diesel engines.
>> Worldwide service organisation
with over 150 service centres
>> Fast delivery of high-quality original
spare parts
>> Rapid, reliable and qualified
support
>> Regular updates with the latest
information and training of
operational employees, either
on site or at our global network
of PrimeServ Academies
>> Maintenance agreements
>> Almost 110 years of service
experience
During commissioning of the power plant,
SaCoS-DF undergoes a factory test
together with the engine resulting in short
fine-tuning and functional testing.
NOx
As with all MAN Diesel engines, the
NOx emissions of the 51/60DF engine
are below the World Bank requirements
for exhaust emissions.
The 51/60DF engine is equipped with
variable injection timing for NOx opti-
misation. In gas mode, the engine’s
emissions are significantly below
the allowable World Bank limits for
NOx (TA Luft).
To meet most of the stringent NOx
limits, we additionally offer SCR techno-
logy (Selective Catalytic Reduction) for
this engine type.
