Where to eat
Both in classic and innovative restaurants, quality is the strong point of the cuisine in the capital of the state, where you can eat well and cheap. The formation of the city by immigrants from all around the world gave a trace of multinational cuisine to Porto Alegre. There are about 3,500 restaurants, fast food, bars and cafes for all tastes. Haute cuisine, international cuisine and many restaurants that prepare the traditional churrasco (Brazilian barbecue), the main dish of regional cuisine (restaurants called Churrascarias).
Galpão Crioulo: Considered one of the city’s best churrascaria for its extensive all-you-can-eat buffet and well-stocked wine cellar. Located in Parque Maurício Sirotsky Sobrinho.
Chalé da Praça XV: Housed in a pleasant, Victorian-style garden house and surrounded by a sprawling terrace, this Porto Alegre institution buzzes with activity starting at happy hour, around 6pm. Located in Praça 15 de Novembro

Where to buy Porto Alegre has many shopping options. Everything can be found in shopping malls or shops in sophisticated neighbourhoods and traditional shopping districts, not to mention the increasingly attractive second-hand stores, the outlets for sophisticated Brazilian and international fashion labels, the shops of young, new designers, and the outdoor craft fairs. Central Market (Mercado Público Central): Between the Julio de Castilhos and Borges de Medeiros avenues, Mon-Fri 7:30AM-7:30PM, Sat 7:30AM-6:30PM. Free. The market, built in 1869 and recently renovated, has more than 100 stalls selling local produce, typical products and spices, as well as several restaurants. Brique da Redenção: A large flea market near Parque da Redenção with lots of authentic gaúcho art, crafts, furniture and hand-made stuff. It happens every Sunday, from 9am to 6pm.
The night of Porto Alegre It is Porto Alegre’s nightlife which reveals one of its strongest multicultural sides. Its nightlife is intense and full of good options with cultural events, bars, beerhouses, pubs, cafés, show-places and theatres which make different neighbourhoods alive, each one with its own charm, rhythm and stile. Your program may be a happy hour, dancing, flirting, listening to live music or drinking a draft beer. Although there are several good pubs and clubs throughout the city, Porto Alegre's nightlife basically happens in two neighbourhoods: Cidade Baixa and Moinhos de Vento. Cidade Baixa is an old neighbourhood surrounded by historical buildings and old-fashioned mansions. Most of the popular and cheap bars are located in Lima e Silva Street. They are the traditional xis (cheeseburgers) places, such as Speed and Cavanhas. In República Street, pubs and bars are fancier and more expensive too. Inside the old mansions of João Alfredo Street, several dance clubs party every night. The places are perfect to dance Brazilian popular music (called MPB) and samba. Moinhos de Vento is one of the most shophisticated neighbourhoods in town. Its bars and clubs are more likely to be fashionable. Along Padre Chagas Street you can find typical Irish pubs, sophisticated cafés, bars and restaurants, such as Dublin Irish Pub, Lilliput, Caminito Bar & Café and Café do Porto. Other options are:
