1. Ratnagiri District consists of nine talukas viz. Ratnagiri, Guhagar, Dapoli, Mandangad, Khed,
Chiplun, Sangameshwar, Lanja and Rajapur. The District has 3 Revenue Sub-Divisions consisting 3

Sahyadri Ranges lies a hilly track and its off shoots covering area about 15 kms. (ii) The middle track
of the district having plateau surface between foot hills and 15 kms. Away from coastal line which is
used for cereal crops like rice, ragi. (iii) The Western part of the district, coastal zone about 15 kms,
inside sea where coconut, mango, arecanut gardens and fishing are the main sources of livelihood.

District Industrial Potential – Ratnagiri District
MSME-DI, Mumbai Page | 3
Over 85% of the land surface in the district is hilly. The main range of the Sahyadri consisting
of steep and forbidding scraps from the eastern boundary of the district. In the center, there are the
transverse chains of small hills which project from the main range and develop higher elevations in
the middle portion, where they are parallel to each other and as a result the numerous streams which
flow through the valleys have formed parallel drainage pattern. All the rivers in the district, originate
from the Sahyadri ranges and have reached their base level of erosion within a distance of 20 kms. All
the 8 rivers in the district flow from east to west and merge in the Arbian Sea. River Savitri flows on
the northen perpghery, forms natural boundry between Ratnagiri and Raigad districts and is
navigable for about 35 kms. In Ratnagiri district, the other important rivers are Vashisthi, Jagbudi,
Shastri, Bav, Muchkundi, Jaitapur. The district has numerous small creeks and back waters all along
the coastal line. Most of the rivers in the district are not perennial though they are over flooded during
mansoon due to heavy rains.
E) Total geographical area and area under forest:-
The total geographical area of the district is 8326 sq kms. of which, area under forest is only
5835 Hect. forming 0.71% of the total geographical area. There is no forest area in Ratnagiri, Guhagar,
Dapoli and Sangameshwar blocks. More areas are coming under plantation by Social Foresty
Department.
F) Agriculture:-

lakh hectares 46.02% was under cultivation. Paddy is the main crop of the district cultivated in an area
of 0.77 lakhs Hectares contributing production of 2.22 lakhs metric tonnes. Out of 0.77 lakhs Hect
paddy, as much as 0.73 lakh hectors is under early type of varieties. The per hector yield of rice during
the year 2011-12 was estimated 2883 kgs.
Horticulture gains more importance in the district owing to its peculiar topography and agro
climatic conditions. Maharashtra Govt. has declared Ratnagiri District as “Horticulture District” in
order to boost economy of the region. The district has also been identified as “Agri Export Zone” by
