It is 40 years since the fi rst Bradt guide was published and what a distance we have travelled in that time. The very fi rst guide was a small yellow booklet, stapled together, called Backpacking Along Ancient Ways in Peru and Bolivia (see bottom right), and in 2014 we are very pleased to be re-issuing it in a much evolved and expanded incarnation under the title Trekking in Peru. See p.3 for more details of this and other anniversary titles, including a celebratory collection of writings from legendary travellers such as Michael Palin, Dervla Murphy and our very own Hilary Bradt, in The Irresponsible Traveller: tales of scrapes and narrow escapes.
Our programme this year also includes a relaunch of our British Slow Travel regional guides (see pp.4 – 6), a new collection of writings from one of the best wildlife writers of our times, Brian Jackman (see p.10), and brand new guides to some truly ‘Bradt-ish’ destinations, not least Kashmir, Gabon and Liberia. And in September, watch out for another innovative British title, Freedom Pass London, which will help Londoners make the most of this unique travel pass.
Over the years we’ve been thrilled to pick up a host of accolades and 2013 was no exception with several of our writers and staff being recognised in the prestigious annual British Guild of Travel Writers’ awards. See the back cover of this catalogue for a full list of who has won what.
We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has supported us in the 40 years that we have been going and we look forward to working with you for many more to come.
There are still so many roads less travelled to be taken.

...take the road less travelled“Our books are as much travelogues as travel guides, infused with the personal voice and accounts of each author.” Hilary Bradt, Founder
In 2014, Bradt celebrates 40 years of publishing unique guides to some of the world’s most interesting destinations. We now have around 200 titles on our list. Each of our books draws out the aspects and features of a destination that make it special, allowing authors to indulge their individual passions and deliver a guidebook that’s not just fi t for purpose, but tailored to the region or country too. We have always said that countries can’t be shoe-horned into a template. Our attention to quality has brought many awards, including:
• BGTW Travel Writer of the Year 2013 – Mike Unwin (Swaziland and 100 Bizarre Animals)
• BGTW Best Guidebook 2013 – Slow Cornwall by Kirsty Fergusson
• Top recommended travel guide publisher 2013 and 2011– Which? magazine
• BGTW Travel Writer of the Year 2012 – Adrian Phillips, Bradt’s Publishing Director
• BGTW Best Guidebook 2012 – Flanders by Emma Thomson
• Gold award in the Wanderlust Best Guidebook Awards – 2011 and 2009
• Trade Publisher of the Year Commendation 2011 – Independent Publishers’ Guild
• Best Guidebook Series 2010 – The Oldie
