PROGRAM OBJECTIVE
Dear Colleague:
We would like to extend this invitation to the upcoming 5th annual symposium “Current Techniques in the Management of Cranial and SpinalDisorders”, that is organized by Boulder Neurosurgical Associates. The goal of this symposium is to provide an environment in whichrepresentatives from all medical professions involved in the treatment of cranial and spinal disorders can share their knowledge, exchange ideas, meet colleagues and become familiar with the newest technologies and devices in the field. The multidisciplinarynature of this symposium reflected throughout the scientific program was chosen to be of interest to all participants. Dr. John Sampsonfrom Duke University has been selected to serve as the program’s distinguished visiting professor. He is an internationally recognizedexpert in the field of neurosugery and especially in the area of immunotherapy for brain tumors. Dr. Sampson offers us a uniqueopportunity to hear first hand about his work on tumor-specific vaccine for malignant gliomas. Also, we will discuss current conceptsin cerebrovascular surgery, new standards in outpatient spine surgery and anesthesia. The technical exhibition continues to groweach year and we are looking forward to welcoming our colleagues from the industry. This is an important part of the meeting and weencourage you to visit the exhibition during the breaks.
Medical Education Resouces designates this educational activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 credits and 7 contact hoursfor nurses. The specific symposium educational objectives are:
Describe a number of new treatments and innovative technologies that are available for management of spinal and cranial disorders Discuss the progress that has been made in neurological surgery and its current role in the treatment of spine and cranial diseases Identify the importance of a comprehensive approach to the management of spine and cranial diseases Create a forum for discussion of the issues specific to everyday practice in order to improve clinical management of cranial and spinal disorders
We are sure that this meeting will create an informative and enjoyable environment for all participants.

Program Chairman,Alan Villavicencio, M.D.
Alan T. Villavicencio, M.D.earned his M.D. from HarvardMedical School and completedhis neurosurgical residency atDuke University. He went on toperform an orthopedic spine sur-gery fellowship at the Institute forSpinal Disorders at Cedars-Sinaiin Los Angeles. Dr. Villavicenciohas extensive experience in thetreatment of spinal deformity, scoliosis, artificial disc replacementand minimally invasive spine sur-gery including endoscopy. Dr.Villavicencio has published morethan 50 papers and is the pri-mary investigator in several ongo-ing prospective randomized trialson both cranial and spinal sur-gery.

This includes surgeons, primary care physicians, interventional physiatrists, chiropractors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, and others interested in the subject. The most innovative technologies and the latest evidence-based clinical guidelines in the care of cranial and spinal disorders will be presented.
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
· Describe a number of new treatments and innovative technologies that are available for the management of spinal and cranial disorders · Discuss recommendations for treatment of spinal and cranial disorders based on the latest evidence-based clinical practice guidelines· Recognize the importance of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the management of spinal and cranial disorders · Discuss the issues specific for everyday practice in order to improve clinical management of cranial and spinal disorders
CME Credit
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and Standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the AANS and JPNI. The AANS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Dr. Grossman is the founder and director of the Methodist Neurological Institute and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Methodist Hospital, Houston. Dr. Grossman’s presentation will discuss new therapies for spinal cord injury. In the past decade, Dr. Grossman has organized a network of hospitals in North America to test new therapies for spinal cord injury, funded by the Christopher Reeve Foundation and the Department of Defense. Dr. Grossman will also share his account of the events in Trauma Room 1 at Parkland Hospital. Dr. Grossman and Dr. Kemp Clark were the two neurosurgeons who examined President Kennedy in Trauma Room #1 at Parkland Hospital.
Robert G. Grossman, MDDr. Linovitz has extensive clinical and research experience. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of California, San Diego and spinal surgery fellowship at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, England. Dr. Linovitz previously limited his practice exclusively to treating problems of the spine. In December of 2004 he discontinued his clinical practice and devoted his time to research. Dr. Linovitz is currently the Medical Director of Research and Education at CORE Orthopaedics. Dr. Linovitz’s clinical research is predominantly in the area of adult allogeneic stem cells for spinal fusion and fracture repair.
