The Queensland Museum Network welcomed more visitors to its museums than ever before.• 1,326,638peoplevisitedamuseumintheQueenslandMuseumNetwork,surpassingthepreviousyear’smillionmilestonerecordby32%andexceedingthisyear’stargetbymorethan18%.

• Forthefirsttime,morethanonemillionvisitorsexperiencedtheQueenslandMuseumandSciencentreinoneyear.Together,theywelcomedacombined1,085,363visitors,31%morethanthepreviousyear.

• Mummy: Secrets of the TombfromTheBritishMuseumbecamethemostsuccessfulinternationaltouringexhibitioninQueenslandMuseumhistorywhenitconcludeditsexclusivesixmonthBrisbaneruninOctober2012.Itspopularityledtoasixweekextensionandatotalof207,399visitorswereimmersedinthestoryofa2800yearoldmummyand100preciousartefactsfromancientEgypt.

In2012,theQueenslandMuseumcelebrated150yearsofcollectingandconnectingQueenslandwithitsnaturalandculturalheritagethroughbuilding,maintainingandsharinguniqueQueenslandcollections.Inthismilestoneyear,theoperationalplanfocusedonintroducinganewmodeofmuseumexperiencethatbringsbackofhousediscoverytofrontofhouseengagement,co-creatingwithcommunity,andadoptingnewsocialmediaandonlineengagementstrategiesandtools.

Yiwarra Kuju: The Canning Stock RouteexploredtherichdesertlifeandtoldthestoryoftheCanningStockRoute’simpactonAboriginalpeopleandtheimportanceoftheCountrythatsurroundsitthroughtheworksofseniorandemergingartistsandthestoriesoftraditionalcustodians.Exhibitionvisitorsreportedfeelinghighlyengagedinbothreflectiveandspiritualwaysaswellasreportingstrongfeelingsofrespectandpersonalgrowth.

Dressed by the Best: Fashion, Glamour and Gwen GillamistheQueenslandMuseum’sfirstdesignandtextileexhibitionshowcasingitsowncollectionsandresearch.TheexhibitioncelebratestheworkandachievementsofGwenGillam,preeminentBrisbanefashiondesignerofthe1950sand60s,setagainstanevocativebackdropoflifeinQueenslandatthistime.Itwasco-curatedwiththecommunityandresultedin20loanstotheexhibitionand30significantnewdonationstothecollection.TheexperiencesalsoincludedThe Lounge(Touch, Feel, DesignandDrawn to Fashion),avintagefairandfashionablehighteasinCollectorsCafé.

Ghost NetswasproducedinpartnershipwiththeIndigenouscommunitiesoftheGulfofCarpentaria.Indigenousmakerscollectghostnetsfromtheoceantoweaveintobaskets,matsandheaddressestellingstoriesoftheircultureandcommunityandperforminganimportantecologicaltask;clearingtheseaofharmfulabandonednets.

mummy’s seCrets revealedAfter3yearsofnegotiations,a2,800yearoldmummy,togetherwith100preciousancientEgyptianartefacts,travelledmorethan16,522kilometresfromTheBritishMuseum,LondontotheQueenslandMuseum,Brisbane.

Over185days,Mummy: Secrets of the Tombwelcomed207,399visitors,including18,433students.40percentofpeopleattendingMummy: Secrets of the Tombwerefirst-timevisitorstotheQueenslandMuseum&Sciencentre.Otherrelatedexperiencesincluded4soldoutAfterDarkevents,5lecturepresentationsand41children’sworkshops.

Thefascinating,chancediscoveryofmissingBook of the Deadfragmentspiquedglobalmediainterestleadingtoresearchcollaborationopportunitieswith6internationalinstitutions.

Duringthecourseoftheexhibition,theQueenslandMuseum&Sciencentre’seNewssubscriberdatabaseincreased460%andwebvisitationincreased113%.

StoriesinthemediaaboutMummy: Secrets of the Tombreachedover27.5millionpeople.Itgenerated51,782visitornightsand$5.84millionindirectandincrementalspendingacrossthestateofQueensland.
