Question of the Day• Each day in class I will put up a question of
the day. • Students will be responsible for writing the
question & their best answer.• After each student has answered the
question on their own we will discuss it as a class
• QODs will be collected before for points!!!

science inside or outside of school?– Did you enjoy it? What did you enjoy?– Did you not enjoy it? Why didn’t you enjoy it?
6. What about science/biology interests you?
7. What specifically do you already know/have you talked about the scientific method?
8. What is your experience using microscopes and how comfortable are you with the parts & rules of proper use?

the plants in our room?
• (List as many things as you can think of)

Ten Themes of Biology
1.Biological Systems
(How we organize things in biology)
![Page 14: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Organize the following from smallest to LARGEST
• Organism• Cell• Population• Biome• Community
• Organ Systems• Ecosystem• Organ• Tissue• Biosphere

2. The Cellular Basis of Life – the cell is the smallest unit of life. All living things are made of cells.
![Page 18: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
3. Form and Function – the shape of things help that organism to do what it does
(Example: the anteater’s long snout enables it to squeeze in tight places to get food)
![Page 19: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
4. Reproduction and Inheritance – you inherit similarities from your parents (Example: if nothing else your parents are human and so are you!)
![Page 20: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
5. Interaction with the Environment – every organism gives off stuff to the environment and every organism takes stuff from the environment (Example: you give off heat and take in food)
![Page 21: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)

6. Energy and Life – Every organism needs energy to live.
What happens when an organism runs out of energy?
![Page 30: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
7. Regulation and Homeostasis
Homeostasis – the maintenance of a stable internal conditions in spite of changes in the external environment.
Example: Even though our surrounding temperature is constantly changing our internal temperature (body temperature) stays the same.
![Page 31: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
8. Adaptation and Evolution – Adaptation is an inherited trait that helps the organism’s ability to survive and reproduce. Evolution is just a change over time.
![Page 32: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
9. Biology and Society –
• How does our society affect life and how does our understanding of biology affect our society?
• Cloning, Stem cell research, environmental issues, hunting, medicine, genetically modified crops
![Page 33: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
10. Scientific Inquiry – Asking questions, using observations or experiments to find possible answers
![Page 34: Biology Discussion Notes](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081504/56813498550346895d9b8ba3/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)

Species of the Day:Cicada Killer:Sphecius speciosus
What do you know about this cicada killer based on the 10 Themes of Biology?
-Go through each theme (you can number them if you like) and tell me one thing you know about this cicada killer based on each theme). For #10, Scientific inquiry ask a testable question about the cicada killer.

Species of the Day:Cicada Killer:Sphecius speciosus
What do you know about this cicada killer based on the 10 Themes of Biology?
Ex. Biology & Society: Our understanding of the cicada killer wasps could help us to control them at our house or not be too afraid of them at a park.
