Prenatal to Newborns
Prenatal (in the belly) First trimester: 1-3 months, size of a fist, has major
organs of the body
Second trimester:3-6: starts to move, gender is visible, end of 6th fully formed but 1-4 in.
Third Trimester: baby puts on weight (6-9lbs) lungs have matured
Newborns
• Born to perceive: – Babies are born with all their senses:• Sight: can see 8-14 inches away (parents face)
– cross eyed because of weak eye muscles
• Hearing: started in the womb…hear their parents voice (soothing tones calm infants)• Taste/smell: sweets• Touch: babies like to be wrapped tight
– Survival Instincts: • Gag reflex: throwing up (ate to much)• Sucking reflex: to eat
What is attachment and temperament?
What do these picturesmake you do?
• When people see babies it has been proven to raise their heart rates and dilate their eyes
• Emotional BOND:– Attachment: an emotional bond between infants
and another• Babies turn to this person when in distress (not wanting
to leave)• If no attachments babies are more insecure about life
and cannot deal with stress in everyday life.
Bell Work How was your first
weekend with your babies?
What are some things you found difficult
about having a baby?
Today’s Topics
Flour baby project questions What is attachment What is the outcome of poor attachment and
what types of parenting styles are there
ARTICLES• Each of you read an article on attachment on
Friday…• I will give you a few minutes to review the article
and write down one or two thoughts about it.• THEN…I want you to:– Discuss what each of you wrote down about the
article• Compile a list of all the things shared from each
person at your table
Attachment
• Around 8 months a baby develops a stranger anxiety• At 12 months a secure attachment is usually formed to
the person who they are comfortable, familiar, and responsive to their needs (playroom experiment)
• Body Contact: Harlow proved that comfort was more important than necessity
• Familiarity: attach to what is known…(books movies)• Responsive Parenting: sensitive parenting helps with
attachment
Effects of attachment
• Secure attachment predicts social competence• Write a summary about what this quote
means, “ Out of the conflict between trust and mistrust, the infant develops hope, which is the earliest form of what gradually becomes a faith in adults”- Eric Erickson – Lays the foundation for our adult relationships
What happens when attachment is interrupted
If left alone for more than 8 months children are withdrawn, frightened, and may be speechless Genie
If separated from an attachment children become upset, withdrawn, stop eating, sleeping, and relating
Divorce causes psychological problems
Assignment
• Read the story about the Girl trapped for 24 years– What happened in this story? (1/2 page summary)– How do you think it relates to attachment?– How does this make you feel?
BellWork: Just write the yellow• Make an acrostic poem using the word: ATTACHMENT.
Your job is to describe what attachment is using this type of poem.
• EXAMPLE:• D aring• O utging• G ood friend
• BUT… all you need to do is use the letters whether in the front, middle, or end of the word
• You can use sentences or singe words
TODAY’s Topic
Children’s Cognitive Learning–At what rate of change does each
child’s mental ability change and what does that look like?
Roots of Personality Temperament: an individual style of responding
(emotional, sociable, irritable, adaptable) to events or situations
Studies have shown: 3 types of temperament; easy, difficult, and slow
to warm up The expectations, values and style of the family
create the temperament. Can change through experience but not always
Child rearing practices• Authoritarian: impose rules and expect
obedience… “Do this because I said so!”– Children that are more behaved
• Permissive: submit to their children’s desires– Can cause a child helpless and incompetent
• Authoritative: demanding but responsive. Set rules with reasoning, usually open discussion– Provide self motivation and self-confidence
Write to Learn
• What type of people do you think raised you and why?
• What type of parent will you be to your kids if you have some “real” ones someday?
• ¾ page due tomorrow 9/14
Bell Work
• 1) What type of people raised you? (mean, strict, easy going…) Do you think they are doing a good job?

Children’s Cognitive Learning–At what rate of change does each
child’s mental ability change and what does that look like?
Quick Review…
• How do we learn?
• How do you think we develop as thinkers?
• What do you notice kids do differently when learning than you do?
Cognitive Development in childhood
• Born with brain cells but nothing to link them together yet• Piaget’s Theory: Child’s knowledge develops through a
distinct set of stages.• This is based on:– Schemas: mental images or generalizations. This helps
them understand future experiences. (sucking on bottles, pacifiers, fingers)
– Assimilations: idea to get new information from previous schemas (animals, toys)
– Accommodations: idea that a schema doesn’t fit so they change it until it does (playpin)
WHAT IS THIS?
This is not an ocean it is actually a lake: Lake Malawi
Piaget’s stages of Cognitive Development
• Sensorimotor: • Birth-2 years • Infants mental activity are based only on the
things that they can see, touch, and hear. (peek-a-boo)
• It isn’t until around 4-8 months old that they can recognize something even if it is not showing the whole thing.
Preoperational (2-7) • This begins when the infant can visualize something
that is not there…find a hidden objects
• Represents things with words and images but lacking logical reasoning
• Kids develop:– Pretend play– Egocentrism (life is all about them)– Language developmental
Concrete operational• 7-11• Children begin to think logically
• EXAMPLES:• “ You walk into pizza hut and they ask you
whether you want your pizza cut into 6 or 8 pieces. They reply 6 because 8 is too many.”
• What is 8+4= 12• What is 12-4= a child will know this instantly
when in this stage
Formal Operational
• Over 11 years• Only adolescents and adults can think logically
about something abstract…• If a person was walking down a street and… what
would happen?• They can work in probabilities, possibilities.• They can imagine and reflect, and make reason
about logical statements.
Commercials/Skits
• I will put you into 4 even groups.• Each group will be given one of Piaget’s stages
of cognitive development. • You have to create a 2-3 minute skit that
represents the stage.• The class will then have to explain how your
skit worked or didn’t work.• We will perform these skits about halfway
thru the period on Thursday
BELL WORK– Divide your paper into 4 sections using Piaget’s
cognitive stages. Create a saying that can help you remember what each stage is.

How do Gender roles and play help in the development in child development?
SHOUT OUT
GIRLS STEREOTYPES MALE STEREOTYPES
Other factors in early childhood
• 1) GENDER ROLES– All stereotypes can affect relationships, goals, and
decisions – Gender roles affect your attitude and behaviors
(emotional/sports)– Starts at birth: colors/cuddling/words used/ toys
played with– Ex: In childhood girls hear more about their looks
“look at how cute she looks” whereas with boys it is more about accomplishments “wow look how big he is and standing up all by himself”
Importance of PLAY With Play Children:
Become leaders Become social and active Become creative Explore Problem solve Learn language
Now we are going to take a vote on types of kids game we want to play!
Get into 7 groups• You will be given a sheet of paper with a situation on it.
– You need to:– Explain what happened– Try and find a solution (I can play devils advocate so…)– Have a reason why you chose that solution
– When you’re finished discuss the following questions in your groups.
– Is it weird to look at gender roles changing?– Would your parents think the same way?– Would someone from another country think the same way?– If gender roles could change which one is the one at the top of the
list?
Bell Work
• 1) Out of everything we have covered about what influences children what do you think has the biggest impact?
• 2) What do you think makes up your identity?
Today’s Topics
How do we as people develop socially?
• Where does our identity come from and how does it develop?• How do peers influence actions
around us?
Adolescence The stage between childhood and adulthood (12-
20) Starts with the growth and sexual maturity
(growth spurt, puberty differs between males and females)
Over time the numbers have gotten younger Why do you think this is?
Changes are physical, cognitive, social, and view of themselves
How does a person grow socially?
Erik Erikson theory of Development Infancy: Trust vs Mistrust Toddler 1-3: Autonomy vs Shame and doubt Preschooler 3-5: Initiative vs guilt School age 6-12: Industry vs inferiority Adolescence 12-19: Identity vs role diffusion Young Adulthood 19-25: Intimacy vs isolation Adulthood 25-50: Generativity vs stagnation Elder 50+: Ego Integrity vs despair
Group Work
At your table, choose 5 of Erikson’s stages and come up with an example of each.
Write them down on 1 paper per table Do not use my examples or variations of my
examples.
Identity vs. Role Confusion
• Identity: Who you are…what you believe in, who you are as an adult, what you value
• What are some things a teenager might do in order to find their identity.– Rebellion, idols, status symbols, certain
behaviors, cliques
STAND UP ACTIVITY
• Agree/Disagree/Neutral– I Know what I want to do when I get older– I am the student that I want to be– Politically I know where I stand– I am a good friend– I know how to be in a relationship– I know how to be a parent– I know where I stand religiously
Identity: How does it develop• Identity development:• 1. Identity diffusion. The person has not
thought about major life choices and is nowhere near committing to a course in life.– Example “I just haven’t thought about my
values; I don’t know what I think.”• 2. Foreclosure. The person does not question
his or her life choices but instead bases them on those of parents.– “I guess I have the same values as my
parents– that’s the way I was brought up.”
Identity development continued
• 3. Moratorium. The person is taking the time to think, question, and experiment with life choices. – “I am working on my own sense of right and
wrong; I see some good things in the way I was brought up, but I am considering other choices as well.”
• 4. Identity achievement. The person has made some personal commitments to his or her own choices. – “I know what I believe and what’s right for
me.”
Identity Process is not easy
• It takes time• It is uneven: –Can have a religious identity but not a
political identity• It is a continuous battle throughout your
life
Bell Work
1) What is an adolescent and what makes up your identity?
2) As a teenager how do you think your environment influences you?
Today’s questions
What influences teenagers lives socially?
Quick Write
You have minute to write down as many things that influence you.
What did you come up with?
Social influence: 1. Family
• Families are responsible for passing down the values and beliefs…
• During the teen years:– Teens begins to question the adults logic and
there is usually more arguments but this is healthy – Compare your family to others– You begin to search for independence
Social: 2. Peer Groups• Do your peers influence you in a good way or a
bad way?– What did the article talk about? What did you
think?– Studies show that you choose peers with similar
moral values so peers are you spend most your time with.
• A peer group is the group of people your same age
• Are peer groups important? YES along with parents (monkey experiment)
• More positive than negative
Peer groups and Conflicts
• Cliques: a group that excludes others unless they fit into a mold
• Values: Peers vs family–Both influence but in what waysAt your tables come up with 2 lists: Peers vs
Family. In what ways do each influence you? At least 6 each.
Final influence: School• Why are schools so influential?• Children are in school up to 10,000 hours total.• Sexuality: Girls value emotional connection– Boys value more physical pleasure
• Transitions in school– Moving into high school can have the top-dog
Phenomenon• This is when they are used to being the oldest in 8th
grade to the youngest in the school, with new rules, new people, and new teachers. This affects self-esteem all over again.
