2017-2018 McMaster Basketball Gameday Program
McMaster men’s basketball starts a new era in 2017, as Patrick Tatham has taken the helm as head coach for the Marauder program. Coach Tatham brings an accomplished resumé to Hamilton, including being named the CIS Coach of the Year after leading Ryerson to the OUA Championship in 2016. He inherits a McMaster squad that managed to win a playoff round on the road, before losing to the eventual national champions.
The Marauders are cautiously optimistic with regard to their prospects for success in 2017-18. Several key players have moved on, but some exciting new talent has come on board with serious potential. Coach Tatham has revamped the coaching staff, and while it will take some time to build the culture he wants, Mac fans can expect to see a team that plays fast and defends hard.
“It’s a new beginning for both myself and the team,” said Tatham. “Our roster lacks a lot of OUA and U SPORTS game experience, but the team has demonstrated they’re willing to work hard and compete.
“We will play an exciting brand of basketball, and I know we’ll be ready for the challenge of OUA league play in the toughest conference in the country.”
Among the returning players, senior guard David McCulloch will be counted on to continue as the team’s leader. Among the OUA leaders in minutes played, McCulloch should get some more rest this season, which will help him become even more effective at both ends of the court. Junior post Matt Quiring looks ready to assume a bigger role as the team’s top frontcourt option. Quiring had some impactful games last year, and becoming more consistent will make him vital to team success.
Returning guards Andre Toic and Marko Grahovac each saw some playing time last year, and both will have to compete hard to keep from losing minutes to some of the new blood. Guard Josh Nardini is also back after a medical red shirt year, and provides depth to the backcourt. Veteran forwards Danylo Kostecki and Jan Hirjak will be in the mix for playing time, along with Kwasi Adu-Poku, who did not play much as a freshman, but who looks ready to contribute as a sophomore.
Adding to the depth of the Marauders guard corps is a trio of transfers and one recruit. Former OCAA All-Star Kareem Collins has moved across town from Mohawk College, while Miles Seward and Tyrick Thompson both return to Canada after starting their careers in the U.S.A. The experience these older players possess will enable them to make an immediate impact. Freshman Jacob Edwards arrives as a knockdown shooter, and once he adjusts to the pace of university play, he will compete for playing time. Also joining the Marauders is Sheldon McIntosh , who arrives back in his hometown as a transfer from Carleton, and will redshirt this season while he gets ready to don maroon next year.
Among the forwards, 6-6 Sasha Simic is another re-patriated Canadian, who returns from the U.S. system and who should make an immediate impression with his size and experience. Standing seven feet tall, freshman Jake Hammel has a ton of potential and the size to make an impact. Expect him to get some opportunities to play as the Marauder frontcourt sorts itself out.
With the OUA returning to the East and West division format, the Marauders will see more of some traditional opponents, with divisional games carrying more weight. Rekindling some of those long-time rivalries will make for a very exciting season. The Marauders would like to thank all of the fans that come out to the games and support the team, as it competes to make the Burridge Gym one of the toughest places for visiting teams to play in Canada.
David McCulloch will reprise his role as the Marauders leader in 2017-18.

HEAD COACH PATRICK TATHAMEntering his first full-time head coaching position in U SPORTS at McMaster, Tatham brings a wealth of progressive experience to the role, including six seasons on the sidelines of the two-time defending Wilson Cup champion Ryerson Rams. He joins the McMaster staff after spending the 2016-17 season as an assistant coach with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League, while on a professional development leave from Ryerson. Tatham helped guide the Rams through the most successful period of their program’s history, after being added to the Rams staff as an assistant coach in 2010. He assumed the duties of interim head coach in 2015-16, leading the Rams to a 17-2 regular season record and finishing atop the OUA standings for the first time. The team’s successful campaign continued into the playoffs, where the program captured its first Wilson Cup title as OUA champions by defeating the reigning, five-time CIS champion Carleton Ravens in the final. His effort in the interim role earned Tatham OUA Coach of the Year honours, and he became the first Ryerson coach to be awarded the Stu Aberdeen Trophy as CIS Coach of the Year. Experienced on the international stage, Tatham served on the staff of the Canadian Junior Men’s National Team in 2012, helping to guide the team to
bronze at the FIBA Americas U18 Men’s Championship in Brazil. He was a member of Team Canada’s coaching staff for the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, where the Canadians went 5-0 in pool play and finished fourth. Tatham’s involvement with Canada Basketball will continue at the cadet level, as he has been named as an assistant coach of the Canadian National Boys Cadet Team for the next two years. A graduate of Cleveland State University, where he played basketball at the NCAA Division I level, Tatham was a member of the Canadian Junior National Team from 2002-2004. He played three professional seasons in Switzerland, Syria, Qatar and Germany at the conclusion of his varsity career.
Patrick lives in Milton with his wife Gillian, who played basketball at the University of Waterloo, and their daughter Glory.

SPORT MEDICINE
The David Braley Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre has been serving the McMaster and Hamilton communities since opening in 2008. It is one of the country's premier facilities for sports medicine and orthopaedics, and is staffed by some of the most prominent sports medicine professionals in Canada.
In addition to the state-of-the-art facilities in the David Braley Athletic Centre, that are available to the general public, McMaster student-athletes receive treatment in the Varsity Clinic, located in Ron Joyce Stadium.
Among some of the unique aspects offered are the only hydrotherapy pool in the greater Hamilton area and an in-house outlet for custom orthotics and bracing.
Dr. David Levy brought his wealth of experience to the clinic in 2015.
Our clinic hosts the only hydrotherapy pool in Hamilton. The court sports are serviced by the Ivor Wynne Centre’s varsity clinic.
