BUYERS PREPPING FOR KEENELAND SALEBy Ian Tapp
Less than two weeks from the opening session
of Keeneland's 12-day September yearling sale,
bloodstock agent Donato Lanni is in preparation
mode.
"You try to get a good couple of days of sleep
and a good meal before—it's like getting ready for
a hockey game," Lanni quipped. "But, seriously,
you have to be ready mentally and physically. You
have to be focused and cut any non-horse activi-
ties out of your life."
Lanni has a reputation for buying athletes even
if the pedigree happens to be unfashionable.
"The catalog page tells you how much of a
premium you're going to have to give," he said. "If
it's a young mare or a fashionable stallion, that's
all premium on top of the individual. I like Books
3, 4, and 5 best because you can find athletes in
those books and don't have to give a lot of mon-
ey. A lot of those horses have just come in from
the fields, as opposed to the Book 1 horses that
don't have one hair out of place." BH

RUNHAPPY GIVES ASHVIEW A LIFTBy Evan Hammonds
The Lyster family's Ashview Farm bred its sec-
ond grade I winner when Runhappy took the
Aug. 29 King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga
Race Course. Farm manager Bryan Lyster, along
with brother, Gray, and father, Wayne Lyster
III, claimed the mare Bella Jolie for $5,000, bred
her to Super Saver, and found success.
Bryan Lyster said Super Saver was the "nicest
first-year sire we saw, and his price ($20,000)
fit the value of the mare." A vet issue knocked
some buyers off Runhappy at Keeneland Sep-
tember, but the yearling still brought $200,000
from Jim McIngvale.
Runhappy's Lookin At Lucky half brother is
cataloged in Keeneland September’s Book 2,
and Bella Jolie (in foal to Cairo Prince) has been
nominated for November.
"We knew Runhappy and thought he had a
ton of ability, so Super Saver looked good to go
back to, but we liked Cairo Prince and he was a
quarter of the price," Lyster said.
Ashview also bred and sold multiple champi-
on Johannesburg. BH

ADW: SHOW ME THE MONEYBy Ron Mitchell
Less revenue often goes to
purses from wagers placed
through advance deposit wager-
ing services than the same bets
placed on track. A study con-
ducted for the Kentucky Horse
Racing Commission shows where
the money went compared with
where it would have gone had
those same wagers been placed
on track or at other tracks within
the state rather than through
ADWs.
The numbers crunched by
Wilson Shirley track ADW wagers
over a five-year period through
2014. For example, of the nearly
$165.8 million in ADW wagers
in 2014, $3.2 million went to
purses, $2.9 million to Kentucky
tracks, $8.9 million to non-Ken-
tucky tracks, and $18.1 million to
ADW licensees.
Had that same $165.8 million
been wagered within the state
and not through ADWs, $14.8
million would have gone to Ken-
tucky purses, $11.8 million to
Kentucky tracks, and $5 million
to non-Kentucky tracks. Obvi-
ously, there is no way of know-
ing how much ADW handle is
attributable to convenience and
whether those wagers would
otherwise not be placed. (see
full charts here) BH

DUBAWI PUSHES FOR EUROPEAN SIRE CROWNBy Clive Webb-Carter
As we head into the final months of
the European turf season, Dubawi
looks on course to be Europe’s leading
sire. An Irish Two Thousand Guineas
(Ire-I) winner from Dubai Millennium's
single crop of 56 foals, Dubawi has
had a banner year that has seen his
earnings reach more than £5,000,000
($7,675,000) with 17 stakes winners.
Dubawi’s six European group I winners
include the Prix du Jockey-Club (Fr-I)
winner New Bay; King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Eng-I) winner
Postponed; and Arabian Queen, who
bettered Golden Horn in the Juddmonte
International Stakes (Eng-I).
Dubawi has further demonstrated his affinity
for Mr. Prospector- and Sadler’s Wells-line mares in
2015. New Bay and Postponed join Oakleigh Plate
(Aus-I) winner Shamal Wind and Dubai World Cup
(UAE-I) winner Prince Bishop in being out of Mr.
Prospector-line mares. Both Arabian Queen and Jebel
Hatta Stakes (UAE-I) winner Hunter’s Light are out
of Barathea daughters while Lockinge Stakes (Eng-I)
victor Night of Thunder is out of a Galileo mare. BH
TEXAS RACING DODGES SHUTDOWN?By Eric Mitchell
The Texas Racing Commission Aug. 31
was said to have received a last-minute
three-month reprieve from a legislative
board that had threatened to withhold its
operating funds. According to the Texas
Thoroughbred Horsemen's Partnership, the
Texas Legislative Budget Board was expect-
ed to authorize funding for salaries, rent,
and utilities for only the next three months
rather than for the next two years as is typi-
cal at the start of a fiscal year.
Racetrack sources, however, said the
Senate and House of Representatives had not agreed
on the plan. If funding wasn't approved by the end
of the day Aug. 31, the lack of oversight by the com-
mission would have prevented Texas racetracks from
operating live or simulcast racing Sept. 1.
"While we are pleased with reports that our
industry will be open for business tomorrow, this
sort of uncertainty is almost as bad as shutting us
down now," said Jan Haynes, president of the Texas
Thoroughbred Horsemen's Partnership. She said the
group's "only crime" is disagreeing with Sen. Jane
Nelson and Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick. BH

RACING
THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH
The list of men and wom-
en who became notable,
or even famous, because of
horses they have owned is at
least as long as your arm—and
perhaps as long as Whirlaway's
tail.
This intends no disrespect
toward the Harry Meyerhoffs,
the Mickey and Karen Taylors,
and the Penny Tweedys of this
world. Nor is it meant as extra
credit to the Spectacular Bids, the
Seattle Slews, and the Secretari-
ats. It is merely an observation.
The day after Ahmed Zayat leaves this mor-
tal coil, you can bet that American Pharoah will
be in the first line of his owner's obituary. The
reverse, however, does not hold. Any horse's
accomplishments are its own and are neither
polished nor sullied by way of association with
the one who pays the bills.
These observations are noted here largely
on account of my guilty feelings. Up until Sun-
day of last week, I remained firm in my opinion
American Pharoah would not run in the Travers.
This belief was officially dashed when the Triple
Crown winner was led into the Saratoga starting
gate.
For weeks I had been incapable of believing
Zayat's stated intent to run American Pharoah at
the "Graveyard of Champions." By handicapping
the previous race, rather than the next one, I fell
into a trap that catches many horseplayers.
I figured Bob Baffert would not want to run
Pharoah less than four weeks after running him
in the Haskell. I also could not help but think
about all of those newspaper stories, about
all those times Zayat and the truth seemed
like strangers waiting to be introduced. These
factors combined to make me think that Zayat's
talk about the Travers was just that: talk.
But that checkered past was from a time
when Zayat was merely a Thoroughbred owner
of some note, not the high-profile guardian of
a Triple Crown winner. Sunlight is a great disin-
fectant. In addition to millions of dollars, Amer-
ican Pharoah has also brought Ahmed Zayat
plenty of sunlight.
In the Louisville Courier-Journal last week,
Jennie Rees reminded us that Zayat was a bettor
and a fan before he was a big-time owner. How
could he bring Pharoah to race in the Pennsylva-
nia Derby, Zayat asked Rees rhetorically, when
Parx has a 30% takeout on exotic bets?
Zayat had not merely been speaking the
truth. He was also thinking like a racing fan, and
a bettor. When Zayat told NBC on Saturday that
he was thinking only of Pharoah's fans and the
horse's legacy, I finally believed him. American
Pharoah ran a gutsy race, and his owner can
hold his head high. Except for thinking like a fan,
Ahmed Zayat has nothing to be ashamed of. BH
