w ater because of the jet blast
from aircraft taking off from
runw ay 10. The local
government w arns that the
closely approaching or departing
aircraft can "result in serious
injury and/or death." An
additional fence has been
recently introduced behind the
Runw ay 10 to prevent
irresponsible tourists from
hanging on to the main fence
surrounding the runw ay w ishing
to experience the blast caused
by the jet f low .

The profit divide: Bridging
the gap in unit costs for
legacy carriers
With low -cost carriers
encroaching on ever more
markets, the profitability of
traditional airlines w ill continue to
remain under threat. Recent
years have seen the w orst of
this shift, w ith f lag carriers in
Europe struggling to keep afloat
and Chapter 11 bankruptcy
protection befalling a number of
their American counterparts.
Indeed, ensuring the long-term
survival of these legacy carriers
w ill require bridging the gap in
unit costs that separates them
from their low er priced
competition. This is not a precise
science, how ever, as recent
efforts by the traditional airlines
to cut costs have measured
results ranging from mild
success to dismal failure. So

the plane maker's f inancing and

forecast.
The encouraging report comes
amid lingering economic
uncertainties and as higher
costs for eligible airline
borrow ing using government
export credit f inancing go into
effect in 2013.
The manufacturer forecasts total
industry jetliner deliveries at
$104 billion in 2013, w ith 95
percent of that expected to be
split betw een Boeing and Airbus.
