BLESSED TRINITY CATHOLIC PARISH Dear Parishioners:
As we continue to deal with the modification of parish life due to the Covid-19 virus, I am happy to share with you some exciting things that are happening in the parish. First, last Saturday, we held our first Youth Mass at St. Edmund Church. This was a great opportunity for the youth of the parish to come together and pray the Mass. Father Jeremy and Richard along with Patrick provided the music to accompany the Mass. Thank you to the members of the PPC who helped me organize the Mass along with some adult members of our youth group. More Masses will be scheduled in a couple of weeks.
Secondly, As many of you know, I serve as the Associate State Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus. It is a big state and three of us share the responsibilities. I also serve as the Diocesan Liaison for the Diocese of Brooklyn to the Knights of Columbus. Over the last 10 years in these capacities, I have seen the true value of the Knights of Columbus in the many local councils I have the privilege of working with.
About 7 years ago, the Supreme Council (HQ) of the KofC began to re-envision the KofC moving from a very cumbersome Home Corporation model, where a council owns a building and often struggles to keep the building operating, to Parish Councils, where the council is based out of a parish. The plan was received well largely by the Bishops and parish pastors. The goal of parish based council is for the values and qualities of the Knights to truly become part of the parish experience especially through Mass attendance, youth programs, charitable works and parish volunteerism. This along with fostering a fraternity and spirituality to the men of the parish has proven to help with the family life. I have personally seen parish-based councils become strong assets to the parish community while maintain their identity as a KofC Council. With these positive experiences I know of, I have asked for permission to open a parish based council here at Blessed Trinity Parish to be named Our Lady of Knock Council.
Some concerns were presented regarding the impact this would have to Msgr. William F. Burke/Rockaway Council #2672 in Rockaway which has had the responsibility of 10 churches. Presently out of the 735 members of Council 2672, 35 live in our Parish. 95% of their membership is outside of the parish. We have begun our recruitment of men who are looking for a smaller council experience. This new council will always work with Rockaway Council as we will share the same supreme constitution. This is not a competition between two councils rather it is bringing the Knights of Columbus to our parish in a parish centered way. We must also recognize that Blessed Trinity Parish is no longer just a summer parish mission as in years past…we are an all-year full parish community. I thank the leadership of Msgr. William F. Burke/Rockaway Council #2672, the Queens County Conference, Kings County Conference and the New York State Council for offering their support and help in establishing this new council. I truly believe in the years ahead, our council will be an asset to our parish community.
Change is often messy. People are set in their ways and the uncertainty of the future can cause resistance among us all. But if change occurs with the best interest of the parish in mind, then we have an obligation to explore these new ways that can help us build an even stronger parish community. Change is not chaos and disruption, it is a new way forward in helping us evangelize each other while remaining true to the Gospel message and respecting our history as a people and as a parish. Thank you for your trust and support, it is most appreciated. And for those who are skeptical, pray for your parish and that our efforts will bear fruit in the many initiatives that we have and will begin in the years ahead.
Sincerely,
Father Michael Louis Gelfant Pastor
