Atul Gawande to Present 2015 NCCY Award
We're pleased to announce that awardwinning author Atul Gawande will bethe honored speaker at the 20th AnnualKenneth B. Schwartz CompassionateHealthcare Dinner on November 18 inBoston, and that he will present the 2015Schwartz Center National CompassionateCaregiver of the Year (NCCY) Award. Dr.Gawande is executive director of AriadneLabs, a joint center at Brigham andWomen's Hospital and the Harvard T. H.Chan School of Public Health. He is theauthor of four bestselling books(Complications, Better, The ChecklistManifesto and Being Mortal). His work
has illuminated the difficult choices caregivers, patients and families faceevery day and the system issues that can impede the delivery of highquality, costeffective and compassionate healthcare.

A Caregiver's Story: Being in the Moment with Patients
The patient was in her twenties, pursuingher dream in the U.S., with a full life aheadof her. Then one day, she was diagnosedwith incurable cancer. Rev. Birte Beuckrecalls their time spent together and thedeep bonds this young woman formedwith her care team. One of her last wisheswas to travel back to Peru to die at home.It was a long way from California and shedidn't have any means to get back home.Beuck pulled the care team together andthey devised a plan to help.
