DEVASTATION LEFT BY CYCLONE PAM
• Beside the death toll, according to UNICEF, at least 132,000 people have beenimpacted in Vanuatu by Tropical Cyclone Pam, of whom 54,000 are children.
• Communication across the country was crippled, with only one cellular towerin Port Vila remaining operational. The power grid was devastated
• Four days after the storm, nearly 60 of the nation's inhabited islands remainedcut-off from the outside world.
• UNICEF has estimated that up to 90 percent of the buildings in Vanuatu havebeen affected by Tropical Cyclone Pam. Hospitals, schools and water supply areeither compromised or destroyed.
Vanuatu President Baldwin Lonsdale said “After all the development we havedone for the last couple of years and this big cyclone came and just destroyed... allthe infrastructure the government has... built. Completely destroyed.”

SES and Digicel Pacific donated satellitecapacity on NSS-9 together with VSATequipment.

LATEST UPDATE ON TANNA DEPLOYMENT

• So far, since the beginning of Vanuatu mission, more than 1.6 Terra Bytes of
data has been exchanged through the satellite link deployed in Tanna.
• The installation supports the on-site work of the NGOs who rely on Databases /
Data exchange with headquarters in Dubai (WFP) and Europe and addressing
the VPN put in place for the Vanuatu government to re-establish their
communications between the island and the rest of the country
• The Terminal is still active in Vanuatu
• In the meantime the Ericsson
Response team took over the onsite
operation of terminal and network
• Actually service provisioning has
been extended until 20. June 2015
