Master Sewing and Design Professional Certification Program--Summary

The Master Certification Program is a performance based programthat was developed by the Association of Sewing and Design

Professionals (ASDP). t is based on ASDP!s Standards of "#alityand is open to anyone.

This eval#ation of professional c#stom sewing and design wor$ accomplishes fiveimportant goals.

• t #pholds high standards of wor$manship.

• t validates the sewing and design professional%s s$ills.

• t ed#cates the sewing professional in the eval#ation of her&his wor$' aiding in the

development of s$ills.• t provides a benchmar$ of s#perior #ality for the cons#mer.

t enco#rages and attracts new and talented people to be certified.

To #alify for certification an applicant m#st.

• S#bmit an application and pay the re#ired mod#le fees.

• Complete all re#irements as stated in the Certification Pac$et.

*pon Completion of the program

• +ne will receive a certificate and be able to #se the Master Sewing and Design

Professional designation on all their b#siness materials.

• ,ill be re#ired to complete contin#ing ed#cation #nits

This program consists of seven mod#les' each with its specific re#irements and methodsof eval#ation. *pon s#ccessf#l completion of all seven mod#les' a certificate will beawarded and the participant will be allowed to #se that designation in his&her b#siness.

 All eval#ators will be caref#lly screened and approved by the MSDP -oard of Directors.-lind eval#ation will be cond#cted on all mod#les ecept /it' which will be 0#ried in personby a three member eval#ation team' and -#siness Practices which will be eval#ated by aSmall -#siness Administration Center Director. Applicants will be assigned anidentification n#mber to be #sed on all s#bmissions. -lind eval#ation will be cond#cted soeval#ators will not $now whose wor$ they are eval#ating and the applicants will not be

aware of who is eval#ating their wor$.

Please note this is a summary and does not include all the requirements of the program.

This mod#le covers fabric characteristics and how they affect appareldesign and the way in which they are #sed in garments.There will be a comprehensive on1line test for this mod#le. Participants

m#st have $nowledge of both woven and $nit fabrics' their properties' performance andsewing diffic#lties. 2nowledge of correct lining and interfacing choices is essential.

Performing a b#rn test will be re#ired for a minim#m of eight (3) fabrics to prepare for theonline test.

This mod#le foc#ses on line' shape' tet#re' proportion' balance'symmetry&asymmetry and scale fo#nd in individ#als and how tocomplement' highlight or vis#ally alter those elements in a person!s

attire. To show yo#r #nderstanding of design concepts yo# need to $now abo#t body

types' proportions' symmetry&asymmetry and scale. 4o# will need to (among other things)#nderstand terms s#ch as 56olden Mean'7 identify balance points' $now how tos#ccessf#lly flatter&camo#flage conto#rs' and relate scale to prints and accessories.

4o# will then be as$ed to wor$ with 8 people having different body types' photograph themand analy9e their body types' then determine flattering design choices for each. S#bmit anoteboo$ containing photos' written observations and s$etches and&or clippings. Thisnoteboo$ may be s#bmitted as a hard copy or in an electronic version.

This mod#le foc#ses on fashion ill#stration' the ability to#ic$ly and acc#rately s$etch ideas' comm#nicate with clients'

develop a fashion line and b#ild a portfolio. *sing classes' boo$s and&or the reso#rceslisted in the s#ggested tets' yo# sho#ld be able to demonstrate yo#r #nderstanding ofbody1drawing styles. There are two sections to be completed. The first involves s#bmitting basic drawings of alist of design details s#ch as sleeve types' collars' belt loops etc. These details may becombined in a drawing' may be on f#ll or partial bodies' and may be traced.

The second section re#ires five (:) eamples of yo#r original wor$. 4o# may #sesomeone else%s cro#is for the fig#re(s)' b#t the clothes m#st be drawn freehand. There

are specific re#irements for these : drawings.

The re#irements will be s#bmitted via email attachments. Detailed instr#ctions will begiven on how to ma$e the s#bmissions.

This mod#le covers correct fit with hands1on eval#ation. t is based on thetet /itting and Pattern Alteration A M#lti Method Approach by ;li9abeth <.<iechty' Della =. Pottberg and >#dith A. ?asband.

4o# will need to create a dress and pant sloper from meas#rements sent to yo# from the@P of Certification Programs. (4o# will receive these meas#rements wee$s before yo#reval#ation.) At yo#r eval#ation' yo# will fine t#ne the fit of these garments on the modelsfrom whom the meas#rements were ta$en. (MSDP will s#pply these models.) -e preparedto answer #estions from the three eval#ators as yo# fit the slopers.

4o# are also re#ired to ta$e and pass the on1line test' Correct /it and the TerminologyS#rro#nding t. There are additional re#irements incl#ding creating a sloper #sing amethod of yo#r choice or a commercial sloper pattern as well as #sing the slash and

spread method to ad0#st a pattern for correct fit and doc#ment the process withphotographs and a written eplanation.

This mod#le incl#des sewing techni#es for creating high1#ality garments. Mastery of the re#ired elements may beachieved via classes' internet or distance learning co#rses'

tets' D@Ds' independent research and life eperience.

4o# are re#ired to constr#ct a minim#m of fo#r garments that incorporate the specifictechni#es listed. 4o# m#st s#bmit one 0ac$et' one blo#se' one slac$s and one othergarment of yo#r choice. +ne m#st be made of blo#se1weight sil$ or sil$1li$e fabric.6arments may incl#de more than one techni#e. Any techni#es that cannot pleasingly beincorporated into the garments m#st be s#bmitted as samples. There are approimately Btechni#es covered pl#s proper #se of interfacings.

This mod#le covers methods for creating a f#ll1si9e flat

pattern for garment constr#ction. t incl#des drafting from

body meas#rements' #se of a body bloc$ or sloper' draping

of fabric to create a toile #sing a dress form or client!s body' and copying' or 5$noc$ing off7

an eisting garment.

4o# m#st show a mastery of s$ills incl#ding ta$ing meas#rements' #nderstanding

grainlines' draping a bodice and s$irt and translating it into a flat pattern as well as dart

manip#lation.

4o# m#st also ta$e an online test on grainline theory and application and copy a pre1

eisting garment by first creating a flat pattern for it' then ma$e it in fabric for eval#ation.

4o# m#st doc#ment and s#bmit all yo#r pattern wor$ in a noteboo$.

,riting and #sing a b#siness plan is a critical component

of a s#ccessf#l b#siness. Caref#l planning is f#ndamental

to operating efficiently' effectively and profitably. 4o# are

re#ired to write and s#bmit a comprehensive b#siness plan. There is a list of

approimately 8: $ey items&iss#es which m#st be addressed in yo#r plan.

The b#siness plan and re#ired s#pporting doc#mentation m#st be s#bmitted for

eval#ation by a b#siness professional that is not affiliated with the Association of Sewing

and Design Professionals to ass#re #nbiased' anonymo#s eval#ation.
