PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Being halfway through my term as TCC President makes me think of “MezzoCammin,” which is a wonderful poem by Longfellow about being halfway throughlife. Longfellow’s generation of writers isn’t much appreciated now, but they wereboth great writers and great travelers. Longfellow traveled widely in France,Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, Denmark, England, Sweden and Switzerland.
His contemporary, Washington Irving, also traveled in Germany, France and Spain:in fact, he wrote Rip Van Winkle in Birmingham, England. He had learned all aboutSleepy Hollow on an earlier trip when he had to flee from a yellow fever outbreak. What exotic place was suffering from yellow fever? It was Manhattan.
Travel back then, in the early nineteenth century, could be seriously difficult. We have it much easier, andwe are all wimps compared to Montaigne, who traveled around the Alps in the sixteenth century, all thewhile enduring excruciating kidney stones as his carriage bumped from one rock to another.
We owe a debt to these earlier hardy travelers. Mark Twain put it very well in 1857. “Travel is fatal toprejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one littlecorner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
So let’s all keep moving! And if you haven’t been to Dublin’s fair city recently, or at all, why not join thelocal TCC group for their meeting in April? I’m sure they’d love to meet you.
Christopher Hudson
ST. BARTS AND ABKHAZIA ADDED TO TCC LIST
(continued on page 3)
The TCC Board, at its meeting in December,2008, voted to add two more countries – St.Barts and Abkhazia -- to its approved list, bring-ing the total to 319. Here is some of the ration-ale for the Board’s decision.
St. Barts, in the Caribbean, became a separatecollectivity of France on February 22, 2007.Previously, it was administered together with theFrench portion of the island of St. Martin. Withits new status, the U.S. State Department addedSt. Barts to its list of entities, as did the American
Radio Relay League. The Board discussed the two breakaway regionsof the republic of Georgia – Abkhazia and SouthOssetia. Since August, 2008, these regions havebeen occupied by Russian troops and bothdeclared their independence, but they have onlybeen recognized as independent by Russia andNicaragua. Both regions originally declared theirindependence in the early 1990s but Georgiadenied their status, so the Board previouslydeclined to recognize them as separate entitiesbecause of the uncertainty of their outcome.
