ARPA’s Sicilia UOC “AREA MARE” was born in 2013 to answer
the requirements to gather together in only one organisation all
the activities regarding monitoring of Sicilian coastal
environment, that were distributed – at that time – between
many ARPA organisations.
This with the aim to make deeper and to enrich ARPA sea
services.

New approach in which sea is not only a salt water basin
in which polluttants could be searched but a super living
organism to monitoring and take care of, if necessary,
with BAT
Moving from these requirements UOC “AREA
MARE” is developing these tasks:
• Coastal oceanography
• Specific polluttants and nutrients research in water
and maryne sediments
• Benthonic and planktonic community monitoring
• Ecotoxicology
• Laboratory specialistic activities

UOC Area Mare has three organisation areas:
Reference laboratories, Coastal environment
monitoring and Naval Units management
Staff
VINCENZO RUVOLO Chemist head of UOC
BENEDETTO SIRCHIA Biologist
ELENA NASTA Biologist
GIUSEPPINA MARINO Biologist
SALVATORE CAMPANELLA Chemist
TIZIANA NICOLETTI qualified technitian
SALVATORE BADAME administrative assistant
In situ activities are worked out by means of 2 oceanographic
naval units: motorship GALATEA and motorship TETI. The first
one managed in cooperation with Coast Guard General
Headquarters, the second one is directily managed by Area
Mare personnel

On shore laboratories activities work on nutrients analysis, granulometry,
chemical phisics water parameters, planktonic biomass determination,
macrozoobenthos determination, benktonic dinoflagellate (Ostreopsis
ovata, Coolia monotis, Procentrum lima ecc.) specialistic ecotoxicological
analysis. Laboratories are located in the new via Partanna Mondello, 50/A
site.
Micro polluttant analysis in water and sediment are worked out by ARPA Ragusa
Territorial Laboratory which AREA Mare operates with.

Sicilian coastal monitoring plan, (update in
process), was realised with Regione Siciliana and,
at the moment, takes into account 1 or 2 sampling
sites per water body, for a total amount of 65
stations, as illustrated below.
