PAUL C. MINNEYFirm principal Paul Minney has represented charter schools since the inception of the Charter Schools Act in 1992. His advocacy and litigation efforts have influenced policy decisions at the regulatory and legislative levels. His focus is charter school development, revocation and non-renewal defense, audit defense, facilities, corporate issues, litigation and appellate representation.
JAMES E. YOUNGFirm principal Jim Young has been committed to education throughout his entire career, first serving as a teacher, and then working exclusively as an attorney to represent and protect public schools for the last two decades. In 2012, Jim successfully argued before the California Supreme Court in a case which resulted in a published decision upholding the rights of charter schools under California’s Charter Schools Act. Jim has served as chief negotiator to establish many of the first charter school labor agreements in California, and he negotiated one of the first charter school labor agreements in New York. He is a frequently featured speaker in charter school specific employment law, board governance and student matters.
LISA A. CORRFirm partner Lisa Corr represents charter schools in all phases of development and operation. She specializes in the petition process, negotiation of legal and fiscal agreements, as well as administrative services. She further represents charter schools in matters of policy development, special education, facilities, dispute resolution, and non-classroom-based compliance.
JERRY W. SIMMONSFirm partner Jerry Simmons’ expertise involves all matters relating to charter school creation and operation. His focus includes Brown Act and conflict of interest law compliance, facilities leases and development, contract law, char-ter school development and expansion, State Board of Education representa-tion, audit defense, policy development, and board governance.
CHASTIN H. PIERMANFirm partner Chastin Pierman’s practice covers all aspects of labor and employ-ment law. This includes serving as a negotiator for school boards and represent-ing charter schools before the California Public Employment Relations Board. She also advises clients in employee discipline matters, including: layoffs, inves-tigations, grievances, employment contracts, policy development, union repre-sentation, defense of unfair labor practice claims, and employee leave laws.
