SERVICE ASSIGNMENTS
THE GREAT COMMISSION Matthew 28:18-20
A commission is an authoritative order, a charge given another to carry out a deed or action. Great means large in scale, not to a few but to many (or all). Great can also indicate the importance of such an ac-tion. The importance of this commission cannot be overstated. The great commission in Matthew 28 is of the highest of all actions to which we are called. The authority for this commission is of the highest order. It is by the authority of Jesus Who has “All authority”. His authority is from heaven and gives him rule over things on earth. As far as commis-sions go, this one is the greatest.
What is the commission we are given? We make disciples in all na-tions. Making a disciple is leading someone to Jesus Christ and develop-ing their faith in Him. We do not make disciples of “our” church or of the plan of salvation. We make disciples of Jesus Christ. Part of the disci-pleship will necessarily include being baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for the remission of sins. But one who is converted to baptism apart from following Jesus is not a proper disciple. Do not win people to baptism but to Jesus. Being His disciple does not end at baptism. We must continue to learn all the things He has commanded
us and practice those things, which is what a disciple does; he follows the commissions of His leader. And ours has all the authority in the world.
Jesus has the authority to make such a commission and has cho-sen to do so. His commission is that we use our faith to build faith in Christ in those around us. This charge is given to all Christians so go, make disciples, and be part of the Lord’s authorized army of peace and love.

Take Note
Lying at your side, perhaps, Or living right next door, Or working at the desk across The company’s polished floor;
Seated next to you and riding On the city bus, Or walking in the city park And making nary a fuss;
Hidden from view, a smarting hurt Behind the checker’s smile, Or a head in prayer, with anguished tears, Across the Sunday aisle –
Go wherever you will, good saint, And there you’ll surely find The need for love, for faithful friends, For a word that’s true and kind.
Near to you a needy soul Awaits and, silent, cries; Perhaps you only can console By piercing their fragile guise.
The Lord took note of hurting folk,
The ones the crowd ignored;
When we, like Him, befriend the lost,
Ours is a rich reward.
