Influenced by the currently very popular do-it-yourself movement, the contemporary design scene is increasingly shaped by a creative fusion of production and consump-tion. When it comes to the development of a self-made furniture culture, this book project combines for the first time design history research and consumerism theory with numerous historical and contemporary construction instructions and interior design recommendations.
Across five chapters, design history and everyday culture are vividly and closely examined. What are their origins? Which media and channels are used to pass on experiences and practical instructions? Who exchanges information with whom and under what circumstances? And what has changed since the advent of the era of digi-tal modernity?

A “good book” and whatever it is that makes a book beautiful are not easy to define – the details of a design may well suit one book to perfection, but be very much out of place with another publication. With this in mind the author and designer Bernd Kuchenbeiser launched his website “A good book”, where publications of many different genres are presented and discussed especially in the context of their creative design.
He was quick to notice how many of these fine books had a simple design combination of black text on a white background. This observation is why “61 books with black type on white cover” came into being as an “analog” selec-tion from the website: each book here is presented with the cover, a bibliography and a short text, anecdote, or even a quotation to initiate discussion.

The great majority of architectural productions attempt to satisfy our everyday needs and to maintain the status quo of this basic requirement, an effort which is generally dubbed the state of the art. But architects of all times have simultaneously attempted to leave these limitations behind them and to propose entirely innovative paths, challenging the status quo of their environments and creating some-thing entirely new.
During the 1960s and 1970s in particular, utopias served as a source of inspiration for many architects. In the fol- lowing decades utopias continued to be a relevant issue in the humanities, but now tend to be pushed aside in architectural discourse. This volume sets out on a journey of discovery to find the contemporary role and possibilities offered by utopias.

This volume discusses the world’s first building equipped with an algae bioreactor façade. It is the first comprehensive study about this type of innovative archi-tecture that could serve as a model for the future. Together with three other “Smart Material Houses”, this prototypical building forms part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Hamburg.
Microalgae are cultivated in glass photobioreactors to generate energy and, at the same time, to control light and shade. The publication features recent as well as detailed plans and visuals from the first hand-drawn sketches, floor plans, cross-sections and details to a photo documenta-tion.

How does visual creativity arise in the first place and how can visual methods be developed and applied in the production of ideas and variety? For over two decades the authors have searched, collected and produced work deal-ing with their understanding of how experimental design can be created by using methodical design processes. This book is the result of their researches, presenting a wide variety of methods and procedures.
Spanning from historic works of artists such as Monet, Jawlensky and Picasso and contemporary designers such as Buetti, Kieser or Sagmeister, they show numerous par-allels from completely different areas of activity including advertising, product design, poster art, the fine arts and the sciences. The book is an impulse giver and demon-strates once again that creativity is frequently based firm-ly on methods, which in turn it also promotes.

Josef Müller-Brockmann (1914−1996) studied architec-ture, design and history of art in Zurich and worked as a graphic designer and teacher. His work is recognized for its simple designs and his clean use of fonts, shapes and col-ors, which still inspires many graphic designers throughout the world today. Since the 1950s grid systems help the de-signer to organize the graphic elements and have become a world wide standard.
This volume provides guidelines and rules for the func-tion and use for grid systems from 8 to 32 grid fields which can be used for the most varied of projects, the three-di-mensional grid being treated as well. Exact directions for using all of the grid systems possibe presented are given to the user, showing examples of working correctly on a conceptual level. Or simply put: a guidebook from the profession for the profession.

This book is the legacy of Emil Ruder, one of the origina-tor of Swiss Style, famous throughout the world for the use of asymmetric layouts, use of a grid, sans-serif typefaces and flush left, ragged right text. His holistic approach is still recognized as fundamental for graphic designers and typographers all over the world. This volume represents a critical reflection on his teaching and practice and a life-time of accumulated knowledge.
Beyond that, it is a comprehensive masterpiece seen in its overall structure: in the themes presented, in the com-parison of similarities and contrasts, in the richness of the illustrations and the harmoniously inserted types. Behind the purely pedagogic examples of exact proportions, a rich, philosophical thinking shines through. Today, more than forty years after this book was first published, it is still widely used and referenced.

Armin Hofmann’s richly varied work is recognized for its reliance on the fundamental elements of graphic form – point, line, and shape – and the economic use of color and fonts. The thoroughly revised edition of the 1965 design manual classic is still setting standards. Especially in times of the return to clear and minimalistic geometric forms and patterns, his rich body of work serves as a perfect starting point for contemporary design practices.
Elements of image and form are analyzed and examined with regard to their inherent laws. To correspond to the contemporary design techniques, this new edition is divid-ed into computer-system-friendly sections. Thus adapting Hofmann’s methods to the requirement of modern design practices and serving as a valuable handbook for a new generation of designers.

This artfully designed volume sets in on a large scale, the proportions in outer space, and ends with the smallest of typographic scales, with typefaces. Skillfully, the au-thors introduce the reader to the world of visual design and typography, arouse curiosity through an elaborate esthetics, and disclose the magic of typography page after page. Through the use of slightly transparent paper, the effect of particular grid systems becomes obvious.
Impressively short and precise texts familiarize the reader with the respective subject matter; difficulties of typography are illustrated through simple geometric shapes. The first part deals with the question of propor-tions, followed by the subject of the harmony and tension between black and white while at the end of the volume typographic details are discussed.

The time-related dimension of image perception is increasingly heightened because the sequence of moving pictures is so strongly accelerated by virtue of the very short cuts that it becomes impossible for the viewer to make out the individual elements. Under these conditions he loses every notion of autonomy opposite these images, meaning also that he can be manipulated by.
With the aid of more than 200 pictures, elementary phenomena of visual perception are described in this book that one encounters on a daily basis. Brief accompanying texts encourage the viewer to give the pictures his deeper attention in order to consciously experience the phenom-ena. The book gives a comprehensive, clearly structured overview, and the illustrated examples span from two-di-mensional form and color phenomena to the formation of spatial perception up to the influence that emotions and logic have upon perception.

Max Bill (1908–1994) is primarily associated with the terms “Concrete Art” and “Environmental Design”. He was active in nearly every area of art and design, which were universal concepts for him. Furthermore, his theoretical publications have turned him into one of the most fruitful stimulators of Modern Concrete Art in post-war Europe among the Bauhaus generation of students.
This volume offers a comprehensive view into an area of his work that has so far received little attention: typogra-phy, advertising and book design. It shows for that almost everything that the Swiss Avantgarde movement accom-plished during the 1930s was visualized in Bill’s studio “bill-zürich reklame”. The reader discovers Max Bill as the tireless creator of highly individual types, commercial lo-gos and advertisements as well as an exceedingly versatile designer who had an amazing command of “visual humor”.

While in the 1970s just a few hundred new typefaces were published, today graphic designers can choose from tens of thousands of fonts – with an upward tendency. This publication, however, shows that current type design is not subject to randomness or a fashionable hype. Key protag-onists offer insights into their thinking and working, take a position on current developments under the new technical, esthetic and socio-political conditions.
From the rich international cosmos of typefaces the book presents experimental type designs. These can be based on a spontaneous idea or the concept of an individu-ally chosen design project or these are typefaces for books with large type families, which, often over a number of years, were developed systematically with passion, endur-ance and an unswerving attention to characteristic detail.

Jost Hochuli has been working as a freelance graphic designer since 1959. Although book design forms only a small part of his activity, he has become well-known particularly through this work. Besides his book designs, several of his commercial artwork pieces and typefaces are pictured in this volume.
The book is thus the ultimate synthesis of Hochuli’s works. It is structured in three thematic blocks “Commer-cial Graphic Design”, “Typefaces Cut in Wood and Lino-leum” and “Books” which are accompanied by theoretical texts while generously documented by numerous exam-ples from Hochuli’s work.

The digital creation and production of images in all the design professions has led today to fundamental changes in the design processes. Nevertheless, or exactly there-fore, drawing as the basic design tool has gained a new importance. Designing by drawing mobilizes the eye, the head and the hand to an equal degree, and it establishes connections among the senses that the designer can only experience in a very limited way on the computer screen.
This publication teaches the use of techniques and varying palettes as a means of exploring visual communi-cation. Richly illustrated, it is the perfect tool for students, professionals and anyone interested in the eternal art form of drawing. The author Peter Olpe is a graphic designer, photographer, and illustrator. He taught at the Basel School of Design, where he was head of the master class for graphic arts until his retirement in 2009.

The cooperation of Trix and Robert Haussmann with the Röthlisberger carpenters, which started in 1979, yielded numerous successful experiments in artistic and hand-crafted furniture. Not comparable to furniture from the retail store, these exclusive designs were sold as a limited edition of 15 pieces each.
For the first time, a publication presents the full scope of furniture that was developed in Trix and Robert Hauss-mann’s “Allgemeine Entwurfsanstalt” for the Röthlisberger Kollektion. The design objects were highly sophisticated in the planning of each detail as well as their realization and required a high level of innovation, new techniques and technical expertise. The close collaboration and good relation between manufacturer and designers were what constituted the special appeal of the finished products.

The publication invites the reader to take part in a critical examination of today’s sustainability fashion and our own consumer culture. Switching between activist de-mands and subtle humor, it shows the position of current designs at a critical turning point and offers guidelines for sustainable design processes. It presents practical tools alike to be used as basic equipment to clear the way to a social, ecological and ethically sustainable future.
A term like “open source design” stand for a changing understanding of design processes. Learning from each other, exploring experimental strategies and mindsets in combination with scientifically proven methods is the key to change. Detached houses are considered primarily responsible for urban sprawl and land consumption. At the same time they represent the ideal residence for broad sections of society. From the different perspectives of architects and social scientists, as well as photographer Heinrich Helfen-stein, different detached house settlements were at the focus of examination to find the solution for this aparent contradiction.
Instead of the often deplored detached house without identity, a surprisingly multifaceted settlement reality with great potential for identification discloses itself. This work sensibilizes the eye to the specific qualities and unused potentials of the phenomenon and yields new insights and perspectives for a sustainable development of urban land-scapes in architecture and urbanism.

The East German engineer Ulrich Müther contributed an important chapter to the European history of shell construction. From 1963 on he realized pioneering shell constructions that rank among the classics of modernism and inspired architects from all over the world.
The book can be understood as a classical architecture guide and furnishes a well-founded insight into the euphor-ic belief in progress that attended the building boom of the 1960s and 1970s. The buildings are portrayed with the aid of current photographs, plans, texts and project informa-tion.

Steel is one of the most important building materials of our time, and is closely related to notions of “modern” construction or modern architecture in general. This book aims not only to illustrate the beginnings of steel’s usage as a building material, it also endeavors to show the theoret-ical, practical, formal, and cultural consequences of these beginnings 200 years ago.
The volume looks critically at the many-layered con-nections between architecture and engineering, and at the dramatically changing way in which the disciplines under-stand themselves. All of this is contextualized by examin-ing the usage of iron, the new structural building material, during the industrialization period. For this purpose, many notable authors from various disciplines contribute their view.

“What constitutes good architecture?“ is a question Werner Blaser was always asked by friends, readers, companions and students. In this comprehensive work the author sets out on a search for the answer to that question. This volume is not only a fascinating study about quality in architecture, but also a comprehensive overview of archi-tectural history.
By analyzing special buildings, different aspects and interconnections become clear, which by themselves or in combination define an architectural quality. Drawing on photographs from his impressive archive, which he ac-companies with short explanatory texts, the author vividly demonstrates the basic foundations of architecture and perception.

Certain aspects and contexts of the perception of archi-tecture can best be explained by means of images – that is the idea upon which this book is based. The author has divided selected structural details into individual chapters, including such subjects as space, color, dynamics and surface.
The reader can discover analogies as well as contra-dictions and view the photos completely independent of the texts. In the back of the book all the information about the structures depicted in the front can be found, as well as a complete view of the buildings and texts about architecture and perception. The photographs were taken in foreign countries on every continent and depict a great number of famous and representative structures from different ages and cultures.

This memo-game is based on a very special concept: the colors follow the format used in Johannes Itten’s color the-ory: red for a square, blue for a circle, yellow for a triangle, orange for a trapezium, green for a spherical triangle, and purple for an ellipse. The colors are shown with the corre-sponding form, which increases their specific impression.
Furthermore, each color is present in six different nuances; this increases the perception of the color tones and supports the creative process of finding new names to specify the individual forms. As the cards are turned over new color contrasts are revealed; these can also be used to intensify knowledge of color theory. Thus, these cards must not just be used for playing the memo-game, they can also be used for inspiration and for experimenting with different color combinations, series and tones.

The “Color Accordion” turns out to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration. It is a creative approach to create ever-changing color tones by coincidence. The handily manageable instrument is based on 36 color hues in the shape of square passe-partouts.
By turning the mats in intervals of 90 degrees, four shades at a time make up continuous chords of four, offer-ing more than one million chord variations. It lies with the color accordion player to transform the color components into a changeful, ever surprising crescendo by mixing the color mats. With this non-book product, the squaring of the color-circle is accomplished in a constructive and playful way.

This game is a useful tool for every designer to try and test different color combinations. At the same time it offers astonishing insight into the field of color perception for the everyday user. The developer is a specialist in the fields of color theory and color perception. By releasing a chip from one of the five colored boards and place it on a different-colored background, its color suddenly appears different to the one it had in its previous environment.
It shows that you don’t need a theoretical framework to observe the amazingly versatile interaction of colors. All you need is a keen eye and a willingness to try out playfully different variations. Offering fascinating combinations for each of the 80 colors, this product is not only an ingenious amusement, but also the perfect tool for everyone working with colors.

The product is a challenge to train the eye and percep-tion. Unlike traditional jigsaw puzzles, in which the shapes of individual pieces assist the eye “niggli.puzzle” features only two forms: square and circle. In this way, it is not evident which pieces belong to the border of the image, which makes the solution of the puzzle more difficult.
All pictures represent materials: small-sized textures of wood, glass, paper, and metal in great numbers. The five jigsaw puzzles have in common that similar forms are iterated many times without ever being exactly the same. Thus, an additional challenge to the accuracy of percep-tion is created.
