Retirement of millions of “baby-boomers” over the next decade, which will result in significantly different workplace expectations and patterns in the younger generations.
Without adequate succession planning, the institutional knowledge that will be lost will be felt for years to come. Management and leadership styles have to plan for and accommodate these changes in the workforce. Fleet operations have to become smarter, more versatile and more innovative to meet the challenges of the next decade.Source – APWA Manage Public Equipment

Work to have a comprehensive understanding of all areas. Spend time reviewing the “Content Outline” and then target your studying and preparation to those items you feel you need further review in. Some of the items you probably do on a regular basis and those you probably won’t have any problem with. Recognize the items you don’t know as well and spend more time with those.

– What the test should cover
– Relative emphasis of each content area
– An outline for study and preparation
I purchased several of the recommended items on the reading list and spent most of my time studying those references. The “Content Outline” gives you all of the topics that you’ll be tested on and I used that as the basis for knowing what to study. That approach worked for me.

How CPFPs Have Benefited
• Since we are in the process of accreditation, the two dovetail. It gives you respect, recognition, and credibility because you have been tested and certified in your area of expertise.
• It has been a great experience. The greatest benefit is being recognized as a Fleet professional who can share knowledge and learn from each other. It motivated me personally to get more involved in APWA and with our local Fleet agencies.
• It is a great process because once you obtain your certification, you need to meet the re-certification criteria which strengthens your Fleet experience and value to the community and your organization.
CPFP vs. Other Certifications
• It has broader exposure and connects to the other Technical areas within the Public Works field. Fleet is a core service within most public agencies. This certification provides the technical, business, and sustainable best practices for managing a public fleet.
• I believe this certification is most appropriate for the governmental fleet manager. Certifications offered by private associations dwell on issues that the public fleet manager almost never has to confront.
