LAY SERVANT MINISTRY NORTH DISTRICT SPRING ACADEMY 2019 Lay Servant Ministries BASIC Course by Rev. Kalesita Tu'ifua, Instructor ADVANCED Course Lay Pastoral Care Giving by Rev. Garth Gilliam, Instructor
Wednesdays, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, on April 24, May 1, May 8, May 15 and May 22, 2019 Sherman Oaks UMC, 14401 Dickens St, Sherman Oaks CA 91423 Cost & Deadlines: $25 through April 22, 2019. No late registrations.
About the Courses & Instructors:
A Basic Course is required to become a Certified Lay Servant. "The Basic Course for Lay Servants" is the first course one takes to become a Certified Lay Servant to prepare for the servant activities in the local church. The course introduces the stated purposes of Lay Servant Ministries such as caring, leading, and communication. This course will use the Lay Servant Ministries: Basic Course. Completion of this course is required before taking an advanced class.
Rev. Dr. Kalesita Tu'ifua is the pastor of Knollwood UMC, which has both an English and a Tongan ministry. She hopes her presence and leadership in the Lay Servant Ministry BASIC Course will spur interest from the Tongan and Pacific Islander community in Lay Servant Ministries. Rev. Dr. Tu'ifua is uniquely equipped to bridge language and cultural barriers that arise during the course.
The Advanced Course Lay Pastoral Care Giving offers insights into the life span and dynamics of contemporary life to help church leaders reach out with God's love and care for others.
Rev. Garth Gilliam is the pastor of Sherman Oaks UMC and the Co-Director of Lay Servant Ministries in the North District. Pastor Garth believes Lay Servant Ministries is the best empowerment vehicle for leaders in The UMC.
No childcare is available for these classes. Participants must attend all 5 class sessions to receive course credit.
For more information about this event, click here for the full brochure or contact Jean Castro from Sherman Oaks UMC at [email protected] or (818) 789-0351.

Youth Ministries – What’s in store for April?
Youth Ministries is gearing up for a busy month of April! There are two (that’s right!) special events
for youth 6-12th grade, as well as our weekly youth group 6 – 7:30 pm in the Youth Activity Center.
We will be breaking from weekly youth group on April 14 and 21 to make
room for our first special event, and Easter, respectively.
See you at the bonfire! Youth group will be having a bonfire night on Friday April 12 from 6 – 8:30 pm outside the YAC.
Friends are more than welcome; we are planning to have dinner, games, and smore’s!
Human CLUE Event! Youth are invited to Human CLUE at NUMC Saturday April 27 6 pm sharp – 9:30 pm! This is a very
unique event where youth are invited to attend a pizza dinner party
followed by a mysterious murder. Youth will gather clues with their friends
by questioning a number of our special guests around the church campus in
order to solve the mystery! We will then follow with a movie screening in
the church sanctuary. The event is planned to end around 9:30 pm, and is
an approximate estimation based on how long the game will take. Flyer invitations to come soon!
Last but not least, Summer Camp is right around the corner! NUMC youth are invited to join Camp
Cedar Glen this year in July. While early bird registration may be over, NUMC is still offering a $100
reimbursement for its youth members and registered youth in the weekly youth ministries
program. Please see me—youth director Jason Obermeier—for details on redeeming this discount
reimbursement.
Junior High Camp 2019: July 7 – July 13
Senior High Camp 2019: July 14 – July 20
*VBS Volunteer training day is on July 20! If youth in Sr. High are attending camp AND volunteering
for VBS, please speak with Chelsea right away.
Registration can be found on the Camp Cedar glen, or NUMC CALPAC camp websites.
Have a great April!

Movie Night On Monday, April 8, 2019, at 7:00 pm in the Kendall Building, Church and Society will screen the 2018 movie, Vice. Vice explores the epic story about how a bureaucratic Washington insider, Dick Cheney, quietly became the most powerful man in the world as Vice-President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today. Vice was nominated for six Golden Globe awards at the 76th annual ceremony, the most nominations of any film, with Christian Bale winning for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The film was subsequently nominated for eight awards at the 91st Academy Awards (winning Best Makeup and Hair Styling), nine awards at the 24th Critics' Choice Awards (winning Best Actor and Best Actor in a Comedy for Bale), and six awards at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards (winning Best Editing). Additionally, the film was nominated for Cinema for Peace's Most Valuable Film of the Year award 2019. Here is a bit of trivia for you - Cheney is the first Methodist vice president to serve under a Methodist president. Rated R (for language and some violent images). Running time 132 minutes.
Eat Out Monday Monday, April 8, 2019 (4 pm – 9 pm) Urbane Cafe at 9020 Reseda Blvd., Northridge, CA 91324
With each flyer presented, Urbane Cafe will donate 20% of the
