NEWSLETTER – APRIL 2015
VIEWS FROM THE CHAIR
SPRINGTIME IS THE
TIME FOR RENEWAL
Time is galloping by again
and we will soon have
reached both the end of our financial year and our
membership year on March 31st 2015. If you have already
renewed your membership, then please accept our thanks for
being efficient and helpful. You will need to show your new
membership card to the leader of any interest group you
attend. Then you can sit back and enjoy all that membership
of Wanstead and Woodford U3A means to you.
If you haven’t renewed yet, you can post your completed
form and cheque to Sally Knight (the address is on the form).
If you prefer to pay with cash, come along to our April 7th
meeting with your form completed and make straight for the
table set up for renewals.
Please understand that without a new membership card you
will not be able to to continue attending interest groups and
the monthly Tuesday meeting or to receive the monthly
newsletter after March 31st 2015. (We will make an
exception of the April 7th meeting to facilitate late renewals.)
Our Constitution allows 2 months grace. This means that for
those 2 months, we keep names on the membership data
base, in the hope the membership will be renewed, as we
fully understand that there may be personal or family reasons
why renewing WWU3A membership keeps slipping to the
bottom of a list of things to do, but it doesn’t mean that those
lapsed members can have free access to groups, meetings,
trips and newsletters, which would be unfair on all those who
have paid their subscription.
WWU3A is flourishing with a steady trickle of new interest
groups and an exciting list of proposed trips and visits.

WWU3A ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

in addition to those who have already agreed to stand.

GROUP NEWS
Sue Joiner writes: Under a clear blue
sky, with just a hint of warmth in the sun,
the COMMUNITY GARDENING group
rewarded themselves for their efforts in
maintaining the George Lane and
‘Bridge’ flower beds, by visiting Warley
Place to delight in the early harbingers
of Spring. The ground was covered in a
carpet of snowdrops, interspersed with
purple crocuses (see photo) and a few early daffodils. The once
magnificent house has long since disappeared, but the remnants of
the conservatory and stables still stand and you can stare into the
cellars and old kitchen, but it is the gardens that are special.
Once employing 100 gardeners, with greenhouses, ornamental
ponds, a walled garden, an alpine gorge and even a boating lake,
these gardens became neglected and overgrown as the owner ran
out of money and by the time of her death in 1934, were well on
their way to becoming a jungle. In 1977, the land was acquired by
The Essex Wildlife Trust and enthusiastic volunteers hacked their
way through the growth, discovering many old features. Most of the
garden plants were overcome and disappeared, but the Spring
bulbs thrived and multiplied to their current magnificent profusion.
It takes about 1½ hours to explore the grounds and there is a
delightful pub next door for coffee, lunch, or something stronger.

COACH TRIP TO NORWICH
Unfortunately Norfolk was the coldest place in the UK on the day in
question, with a bracing wind, but no rain! Not to be deterred three
Blue Badge Norwich guides were waiting to meet our party off the
coach and we were divided into three groups for a fascinating
walking tour lasting 1½ hours around the cathedral and its
surroundings. After this members had free time for lunch, shopping
and visiting the Museum where there was a small but very
interesting exhibition entitled ‘Homage to Manet’. Our thanks to
Susan Bloom for organising another enjoyable day out.
________________________________________________________________________________
Rhonda Anderson writes: In the SEW CRAFTY group, we are
working on our individual projects. The most exciting things we are
developing are two quilts for the charity Project Linus UK. These
quilts are made for children who are ill, or need a hug. We began
with one and then found there was enough material for another top,
so we decided to go ahead and make another. The theme is red and
green and the block is simple nine patch. We have all contributed
with our various levels of skill and knowledge.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Tina Harris from the SUNDAY SCRABBLE group writes: A
wheelchair bound member, who is a very keen player, cannot get to
either of the Scrabble groups because of wheelchair access. She
would love to keep playing. She lives in Buckhurst Hill. I wonder if
anyone would be able to play the odd game with her. Please contact
me in the first place on 020 8504 7626, if you feel you could help.
________________________________________________________________________________
Jean and Mike Murphy write: Our March LOCAL WALK was
attended by 21 people and we discovered the lovely Claybury
Woods and Park and also had a coffee break at the “secret” café
along the way. Next walk is on Thursday April 9th. Please meet
outside Epping Station at 10:00 a.m. for a linear 5 mile forest walk to
Theydon Bois. There are pubs and cafes for refreshments, before
our return on the train. Strong walking boots or wellingtons may be
advisable, although generally the forest paths are good.

MORE GROUP NEWS
Phil Joiner writes. The BOULES group has now started again and
will convene on the ‘piste’ at Woodford Wells at 10.15 a.m. every
first Thursday until October. For more details, contact me on 8504
5073 or at [email protected]
______________________________________________________________________________
Eileen Cowell of The BALLROOM DANCING group reminds us
that they meet at Theydon Bois Village Hall in the last two
Tuesdays in the month from 3.00 – 5.00 p m. Each session is fun
and it is a good workout dancing to music. There are two
instructors - Russell/Pauline - showing the way. Contact is
_____________________________________________________________________________
Eileen also runs a FRENCH group for all in a relaxed
atmosphere on Thursdays each week, from 10.00 a.m. until
Noon. Contact is [email protected]
____________________________________________________________________________
Jayne Physacklea, who has convened our SOCIAL HISTORY
group since 2012, has decided the time has come for her to step
down from convening this group. We send our thanks for all she
has done for WWU3A and also our best wishes for the future.
___________________________________________________________________________
Sue Goldston writes: The TUESDAY DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
group will unfortunately no longer be meeting. Wally who led it,
has been unwell for the last three or four months, but we have
been soldiering on to keep it going. It has been ‘the blind leading
the blind’ and a decision has now been made so that we cannot
continue like that and that it will no longer be functioning
NEW GROUPS
*CHESS*
Raymond Alexander writes: I belong to and
play for a chess club, and play to a
reasonable standard. Perhaps there are
members of Wanstead and Woodford U3A,
who already play chess and are interested in meeting up to play
chess on more of a social basis. If there are some who wish to
learn how to play, I would be happy to teach them, although I am
not a qualified chess coach.
______________________________________________________________________________
*POETRY READING*
Irene Davies writes: Come and enjoy a couple of
hours reading poetry in the company of others.
Explore together old favourites, as well as new
writers, comic or serious, long or short.
______________________________________________________________________________
*WHIST*
Averil Gray writes: I am considering the possibility of
setting up a Whist group. To my knowledge, there are
not many whist drives around these days and several
people have expressed interest.
______________________________________________________________________________
If you are interested in Chess, Poetry Reading or Whist and
would like to join a group, sign up at our general meeting on
April 7th or contact Val Brame ( details on page 1. )
______________________________________________________________________________
For contributions to the May Newsletter, the final copy date is
Friday April 24th, at 12 noon. Articles ideally should be 200
words or less, with a maximum of 225 words.
POSSIBLE NEW GROUP?
HISTORY
There must be a number of historians in our midst and hopefully
another group will emerge maybe concentrating on World History or
Historical Figures (Churchill, Brunel, Florence Nightingale to name
but a few), the choice of subject is yours. If you are interested in
history and would like to share your knowledge by convening a
group, please contact Val Brame (details on page 1.)

shown such a a keen interest in the trip to the meal and the show at

CENTRAL/REGIONAL NEWS
INVITATION TO U3A MEMBERS
FROM THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA
Best seat in the house for £15.00, as well as a free cup of tea or
coffee, valid for our concert on Sunday April 12th at the Royal
Festival Hall. Includes Haydn Symphony No. 88, Beethoven Piano
Concerto No. 5 and Nielsen Symphony No. 4.
Paavo Järvi’s Nielsen series continues with the ‘Inextinguishable’,
a bracing celebration of the ‘elemental will to live’ climaxing in a
thrilling duel between two sets of timpani. Such was Beethoven’s
iron-clad will, that he completed his mighty ‘Emperor’ Concerto as
the walls of Vienna were crumbling around him and his hearing
was fast-fading. Call the Philharmonia Orchestra Box Office on
0800 652 6717 and quote ‘MATINEE15’ for the best seats in the
house available.

UCL is conducting a research project, looking at the ability of
people with dementia to participate in cognitive behaviour therapy.
To do this, they need to recruit a healthy control group of people

questionnaires and an interview. It will take between 1 and 1½
hours in total. The project is based at 1 Torrington Place, London
WC1E 7HB and you will receive travel expenses and £10.00 of
shopping vouchers. For further information, contact Ells Chadwick

Oyekan on [email protected]

COMMUNITY MATTERS
POSTAL SCAM warning from the Royal
Mail. A card is posted through your door
marked PDS (Parcel Delivery Service),
saying they were unable to deliver a parcel
and you need to contact them on 0906
661911( a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as it
is a mail scam originating from Belize. If you call this number, you
will hear a dial tone and will have already been charged over £300
for the call.
_______________________________________________________________________________ PENSION LIBERATION FRAUD. The
new pension freedoms could be an 'open
season' for fraudsters trying to steal
people's savings, according to industry
experts. Big changes, which will make it
easier to access money in pension pots, were introduced on April
6th 2015 and existing annuity holders will, from next year, be able
to ‘sell’ their annuity for a lump sum. It is very likely that these
changes will also encourage criminal activity. The Government is
advising people not to take cold calls from fraudsters posing as
pension professionals, but to seek advice from known sources
______________________________________________________________________________ FREE LEGAL ADVICE. The Local Guardian
Newspaper has joined forces with Lloyd Green
Solicitors to offer legal advice. Call 0203 595
1778 or online at guardian-series.co.uk/advice
and you will be able to speak to a solicitor on legal matters relating
to most subjects, except criminal cases. In addition, as a U3A
member, you can also get free legal advice by phoning FirstAssist
on 01455 251 500. Quote U3A Number 70494.

Proposals to re-vitalise WANSTEAD PARK,
which is a Grade 2 listed park, have been
revealed. The work will start next year and
include extensive work to Heronry Pond,
which will see wildlife habitats restored and
boating reintroduced. The Temple (pictured)
will be refurbished with a new café and the
site of the old mansion, demolished in the
19th century, will have signs detailing its size and history.
There are also plans for self-guided tours and an open air cinema
and concerts. It has a unique and stunning landscape, combining
a sense of wilderness tranquillity and experience of nature and
outdoor entertainment. ______________________________________________________________________________
Work has almost been completed on
a £1.8 Million flood defence project at
HIGHAMS PARK LAKE. Up to 20
lorries a day have removed over
5,000 cubic metres of silt during the
excavation operation and large areas
of woodland have been opened up.
The existing dam at the lake, created by Humphrey Repton in
1794, has been reinforced by embossing a textile underneath the
soil and grass, behind a footpath, to contain overflow and prevent
erosion which could cause flooding. The Michael Mallison Centre,
a historic boathouse, previously threatened with demolition, is now
protected by a flood wall and a new footbridge has been installed.
Finally, the security fence around the boathouse has been
reinstated, new trees and shrubs planted, a new footpath built,
bike stands installed and benches provided.

Many of us will probably admit to many of these on the list, but at
least by being U3A members, we are trying to stay active and use
our skills, knowledge and brains to maximum effect.
ALTERNATIVE U3A GROUP
Editor: I was invited by another U3A to join in with their group
activities. This is my feedback. (WWU3A is still the best!).
___________________________________________________________
I signed up enthusiastically for the semaphore group, but soon
my interest was flagging.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Someone asked me if I had joined the campanology group. My
reply was ‘I’m not sure, but that rings a bell.’
_______________________________________________________________________________
I had intended to be a member of the camouflage group, but
gave up looking when I couldn’t find them.
______________________________________________________________________________
I needed some more friends and went to the inaugural meeting of
the loneliness group, but no-one else turned up.
______________________________________________________________________________
I tried the puzzle group, but they hadn’t a clue, as they were very
cryptic and were always having cross words.
______________________________________________________________________________
I thought I’d bite the bullet and signed up for the shooting group.
I gave it my best shot, but got fired when I told them it was boring.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I told the stamp collectors group how knowledgeable they were,
but was told frankly that ‘philately would not get me anywhere’.
______________________________________________________________________________
The Greek Comedy group convenor wore a Baklava and had a
great sense of Houmous. It was constant Taramasa-laughter.
______________________________________________________________________________
As expected, I was informed that the next meeting of the psychic
group had been cancelled, owing to unforeseen circumstances.
______________________________________________________________________________
I kick myself for being part of the karate group, as I caught a really
bad infection. I think it was kung flu! I gave this group the chop!
______________________________________________________________________________
I was not too sure whether or not to join the decision making
group. I think my indecision was final. (or was it?)
______________________________________________________________________________
I attempted to join the fencing group, but my efforts were foiled.
_______________________________________________________________________________
A crooked accountant ran the gourmet group, which was very
taxing, as his only recipe was to show us how to cook the books.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I was also a member of the deep sea diving group, but I was
out of my depth and couldn’t stand the pressure.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I joined the origami group, but unfortunately it folded.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I went to the orchestral group and fell over the bongo drums and
got slight percussion. How cymbal can I be?
_______________________________________________________________________________
To see how they ticked, I watched the horology group’s
timepiece sale, but clocked that most items were second hand.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I wanted to be a member of the outward bound group, but when
they took me into the thick jungle, I couldn’t hack it.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I tried their reading group, who were studying ‘Lord of the Rings’,
but started ‘Tolkien’ in my sleep. It was a bad ‘Hobbit’ to get into.
_______________________________________________________________________________
And finally, I visited the Royal Albert Hall with the music group
and it was full of pushchairs. It was the last night of the prams.
