First and foremost, I would like to send Our Sympathy (Chapter TN-N) to Larry Brown’s wife, Shirley and both
sides of their family for their loss of Larry. He was a good friend and was always visiting Chapter TN-N in Jack-
son, TN. We will truly miss him. May God Bless Shirley and their Family.
Well, what better time to get a word in than now, sitting here at work at 01:00am in the morning. I was just
thinking about Spring Fling, leaving in 9 days to have much needed FUN. Richard called me a day or so and ask
if I was ready to leave for Spring Fling, I told him no, but I will be when Wednesday the 24th came around. I can hardly wait! I think most of our Chapter is going, except for a couple.
After Spring Fling, we will get ready for the Strawberry Festival in Humboldt, TN. This will be our first year to
set up there to raise money for St. Jude. We thought we would give this a go, selling Hotdogs, Corndogs, Drinks,
Popcorn, Chips and of course Strawberry Short Cakes. We decided that all the money we raise, would go to St.
Jude. This might be more FUN than standing at Wal-Mart, besides we would get to see the Parades for two days
and enjoy all the festivals. The dates on the Strawberry Festival are May 9th, 10th and 11th. There are things going
on all week, starting on the 6th, but we will set up just the three days.
Then here comes June, a lot going on that month. There’s Chapter Q’s Fun Day, Chapter H & Z’s Fun Day.
Then we (the Chapter) are having a campout at Eldon’s & Sandy’s campground and we are going to the night and
have a GREAT TIME. If you are in the area, you should come and join us, there is plenty of room. What else could
you ask for in FUN, Eating, playing games, sitting around the campfire and joking and laughing. We also have
the ARC Class, but may move it to another week, as to not interfere with Chapter H & Z’s Fun day. I believe June
is going to be a FUN MONTH.
Check your calendar for the upcoming events. Chapter N can check our website for things that are happening within our Chapter, also anyone else can too. But also check out District’s calendar for things going on with them
and other Chapter’s. There are lots of meeting going on across Tennessee and of course the Chasing of the Wood.
Riding season is here, the weather is real nice now, so get out there and find a place to go and visit. You have
friends all across Tennessee and they would love for you to come and visit.
Chapter TN-N is giving away a Remington 770, 243 Rifle with Scope on September 7th at our 2nd Annual
Chicken Dinner Cookout at Bob’s House of Honda in Jackson, TN. We have tickets for a donation of 1-$5.00, 2-
$8.00 and 3-$10.00. If you are interested in getting a ticket or two, you can call me or email me and I will get
them to you. We will also have tickets with us at Spring Fling.
Until then,

Well you just never know how things will play out. I think they sometimes call it “the best laid plans of mice
and men”. Well I don’t know about the mice—but I didn’t fair too good this month.
The monthly gathering was really fun. We had lots of visitors who came just to take the Traveling Plaque back
with them. Chapter Z took the prize. Then we had the dinner ride to Bluegrass Diner in Lexington. Cozy place
with good food. Not many places know how to do chocolate gravy. You got it right—breakfast at dinner.
Then out of the blue, a family emergency meant we would not be able to make it to Spring Fling. I will have to
look at the pictures and see that everyone had the time of their lives. Family first and then GWRRA. There will
be another Spring Fling.
So now we are looking forward to May and our fundraiser for St. Jude. We will be working at the Strawberry
Festival in Gibson County. Stop by and enjoy all the strawberry anything you can handle. See you next month.
Ride A Lot, Be Safe, Have Fun, and learn all you can.

I Think I'll Crash Today
What a beautiful morning! The sun radiates its brilliance through the cloudless bright blue sky. The gently
warming summer breeze draws the perfumed fragrance of the wildflowers to my senses as I inhale deeply, bask-
ing in the peaceful beauty.
I realize what a perfect day this is. I decide to go for a ride with the intent of finding a good place to crash and
break my leg. I think there's a nice road on the other side of the county that would work well. The road curves to
the left and creates the perfect place for me to crash. I'm looking forward to it.
Doesn't this sound like a fun day to you? We never get up and plan to crash, do we? In fact, do you know anyone (besides me) who has ever planned to crash? Yet a lot of people seem to be crashing their motorcycles, so
what's happening? Why are all these riders going down?
Most often we think it is the other person's fault. In multi-vehicle crashes that may be true. Although there
often may be a telltale sign that the rider missed that might have prepared them for the developing situation.
And what about the single vehicle crashes? There seem to be too many of them, as well.
We need to stay aware of what's happening around us. We need to keep aggressively looking for bad situations
as they develop so we can be ready to respond. We need to remember our vulnerability as we ride and seek ways
to protect ourselves.
Almost everyone knows that a motorist turning left in front of a biker causes most multiple vehicle crashes.
What are we doing to see this coming? Are we watching the top of the vehicle’s steering wheel? Are we sure we’re
not hiding behind that van where we can’t easily be seen? Are we expecting the car to turn in front of us?
Most single vehicle crashes occur in curves. The motorcyclist runs wide in the curve and collides with the road-
way or some other fixed object. Most often this is caused by too much speed as the biker enters the curve. What
are we doing to see this coming? Are we slowing enough so we can gently roll on the throttle throughout the curve? If we can’t see the end of the curve, are we slowing even more, expecting the curve to tighten or be hiding
something from us?
Most crashes occur on weekends. Obviously that's when there are more of us on the road as we enjoy those
precious moments away from work when we can ride. Most crashes occur between 3:00 and 6:00 in the after-
noon when the traffic is heaviest. And most crashes occur close to home. This is where we are most comfortable
riding and most likely to take things for granted.
Knowing where and when crashes occur can help us avoid them. On weekends and during late afternoons we
must be more cautious. Running errands on our bikes should also raise our awareness. All too often we let our
guard down and the result is less than desirable.
The saying goes, "Failing to plan is planning to fail." Let's not plan on crashing. Rather,
let's plan not to crash. Stay sharp. Build your skills. Be aware. Keep learning. (from ride-
safely.com).

I spent the first 23 days of April working some long crazy hours. To Keep myself awake during the long bor-
ing nights, I daydreamed about Spring Fling. We had so much fun last year and we were excited about the
change of venue. Chattanooga is one of my favorite places. Avery got sick first. He ended up with pneumonia.
He has really been under the weather. Then I came down with the flu and gout in both ankles at the same time.
So needless to say we had to miss Spring Fling.
Sandy Hayes, our MEC, had put together a fun talent and we (well at least me) looked forward to the Couple of the Year activities. Avery is a little bashful. We never had any idea that we could win but wanted to compete
just to say THANK YOU to Chapter N for bestowing such a honor on us.
We missed it all but we are on the mend. And already looking forward to the next GWRRA District event.

Everyone has smiles when
Jeff is delivering winning
prizes. Nothing bashful
about Jeff. Jim Lester makes his
way to the front to
collect his prize for
the night.
Other winners make their way to the front to choose
their prize. Chapter Z is enjoying all the fun. They also
were hopeful they would have enough traveling points to
take the Tennessee Traveling Plaque back home.
Lucky 50/25/25 winner. As I
recall, he had a very tight grip on
the money.

I think the saying goes something like this. “April showers bring May flowers.” If that really is true, we will
have a beautiful array of spring flowers in this household soon. This is county budget time at work and I was at
work more than I was at home up through April 15. No time to work on the newsletter there. I was able to get to
the Dinner Ride at Blue Grass Diner but I was back at work on the 20th. No time for the newsletter then either.
Just as I thought I would be able to get to the newsletter before the Spring Fling, our family had a medical emer-gency and spent April 21-27 at hospitals in Jonesboro and Little Rock, Arkansas. I am glad that as members of
GWRRA we recognize that family comes first and that is what we did this past week. I am happy to say, that our
brother will be going home on Tuesday and we will settle back into our routine here at home.
Our dinner ride to Lambert’s on March 30th had to be cancelled. I think we learned that March is risky for
booking such long rides—it was still very cold. Who wants to go to Lambert’s when you can’t ride the bike? Our
monthly gathering was well attended. The Traveling Plaque went home with TN-Z. Those from TN-N attending
the monthly gathering were Gary and Anna Duren, Shari, Shannon, and Jeff Douglas, Don and Janet
Rinehart, Gerry and Thomina Alexander, Wes Youmans, Reginald and Kimberly Seymour, Bill Henson and
Kathy Collie, Teo Hill, David and Jeanette Bowens, Sandy Hayes, Debbie and Eldon Seaton, Avery and
Diane Davis, Oliver and Gattie Welch (Big O and little g), Billy and Shirley Mullins, Al and Bernedette Sew-
ard, James Robertson. We had Tony Douglas, Jeff Douglas, Shannon Douglas, Eldon and Debbie Seaton,
Sandy Hayes, Gerry and Thomina Alexander, Bill Henson, Billy and Shirley Mullins, and Jack Hixon to meet
together for the Dinner Ride to the Blue Grass Diner. Nothing like a good breakfast for your evening dinner. The
dinner ride to Martin had to be cancelled. And the next thing up is Spring Fling. So if you please, I will do better in May. I sure hope those flowers are as beautiful in May as the month of
April was difficult.

Getting To Know You
Gold Wing Road Riders Association TN-N
Hello, my name is Avery Davis. I have enjoyed reading these articles over the months. This is a great idea that
will allow us to get to know more about each of our members in Chapter N. So I will start with a little about my
roots.
I was born in Dixon, Missouri. I grew up in Swedenborg, Missouri. I now make my home in Counce, Tennessee.
I am retired and enjoying life now but I worked at Shiloh Ridge Golf Estates before my retirement.
Over the years, I have owned a Yamaha and a Kawasaki. I currently have a burnt orange Goldwing Trike.
My favorite trip on my motorcycle was to the beautiful Ozarks in Branson, Missouri.
I joined GWRRA in November 2010. And I have been a member of Chapter N since that time. I currently hold
the position of treasurer with my wife, Diane. And we are the 2013 Couple of the Year for TN-N. We have three
grown children. Our children live in Missouri and in Tennessee.
Some of our favorite hobbies other than riding motorcycles include, hunting and fishing which we do as often as
we can get away.
One of my favorite memories while in GWRRA is participating in Horizons training. I enjoyed working with others
across the state. To learn more about Horizons, you will want to take the training because whatever happens at
Horizons stays at Horizons.

Words of wisdom taken from the April Newsletter
If you plant honesty, you will reap trust.
If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.
If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.
If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment.
If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective.
If you plant hard work, you will reap success.
If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.

Hello Tennessee Wingers!
Y’all have heard us talk non-stop about Spring Fling, “Winging Around Choo-Choo Town. Well, it is finally
here and I, for one, can’t wait to get started. Becky and I have ramped up to be at full speed by the 25th, and I
know our entire District Team has put in countless hours to ensure this will be a Spring Fling to remember. I
want to thank each and every one of them in advance, you guys really rock!!
I hope each of you find something to make this a memorable experience for you. A lot of our Chapters will be participating in the Talent Show and/or the Best Dressed and maybe the On Bike Challenges. If Seminars are
what you are after, our team has it set up for you. The local community has lots to see and do, so get out and
explore or join one of the guided rides sponsored by Southern Powersports.
I also want to remind you to attend the Couple of the Year Selection Friday morning and welcome our new
District Couple. This is a very large honor and I am looking forward to this. The Grand/Light parade will take us
through five miles of East Ridge and I ask that we have as many bikes as possible to join in this to show the
community what the GWRRA is all about.
So, we are planning a very large party and lots of fun for you in the three days of Spring Fling, so get your bike
ready and let’s start the season off right. Before we know it Wing Ding will be here and we will be headed to
Greenville. The last time we were there it was a great event and looks to be bigger and better this year. Let’s have
a big turnout from Tennessee as we are a next door neighbor, so show South Carolina our support.
Keep an eye on your District website for all the Chapter and Region events to take part in throughout the
year. You get more from our association the more you put into it and I know we all like to have fun. So the riding
season is here, do your t-clocks, polish that steed and let’s RIDE, We hope to see all of you in East Ridge,
