Remove existing metal signs for Fort C.F. Smith Park and replace with new aluminum signs. The four parksigns for Fort C.F Smith Park are about 20 years old, are damaged and showing their age and have out-of-dateinformation and graphics (see attached). New signs will be made to replace each of the existing signs updatingtext including: "Arlington Historic District," "Hendry House" and "Visitor Center". The new signage follows theArlington County "Graphics Standards Guidelines" with Copperplate Gothic Bold, which has high legibilityand is similar to a Civil War era font.

Fort C.F. Smith Signage Project
Design Justification
The design of the proposed Fort C.F. Smith Park signs is intended to convey the site’s historical significance in a manner that is both easy to see and in conformity with other new Arlington County park signage. The signs’ font and color scheme were initially chosen to represent the rich Civil War history of the site, as the lettering matches the printed font of the era and the color resembles that of the Union uniforms worn by soldiers who would have garrisoned the fort (Figure 1). For wayfinding purposes, the proposed color in dark blue is slightly brighter than the existing neutral tone scheme, which was considered necessary to increase the signs’ visibility amid the existing park and neighborhood features. Additionally, the color scheme closely matches that of the signage at Fort Ethan Allen Park, which is also in the same color range of the County standard blue, PANTONE® 2955, set by the current Graphic Standards Guidelines (Figure 2). By the combination of the proposed font, including the style and letter size, and color scheme, the overall dimension of the signs can be reduced 60-80% from that of the originals. This will allow the signs to be less physically intrusive and easier to maintain in the future.
