INTRODUCTION
Shipyard De Donge designed and built a new type of excavator: the Backacter.
The first dedicated marine dipperdredger excavators in the world.
Why to do this:
• The Classic approach of an (land) excavator on a dipperdredger had too many
compromises.
• Higher lifting and penetration forces were demanded.
• A functional desire to put the engines in the hull; to have water cooling, no fuel stops,
a reduced oil spill risk, easier maintenance, etc.
• Free choice of dimensions and components.
• Stronger dredging equipment.
• Improved design with regard to maritime environment.
• Longer life time required than offered by the “classic” mining machine manufacturers.
• Reduced fire risk.
GENERAL FEATURES
• A top-class marine dredger with all drive unit power packs in an engineroom under deck.
• Big buckets at a deep dredging depth with highest penetration forces.
• No fuel stops required, automatic filling of the daytank.
• High and extended dumping reach.
• Low turbidity dredging machine.
• Shock-absorbing elastic foundation.
• All spud and spudcarrier operations from the Backacter’s cabin.
• One hydraulic powerpack system for the Backacter, for 360° rotating propulsion thruster,

TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS
BA 600 Marine Excavator features:
• Gravity filling of the hydraulic main-pumps for a longer life-time of the pumps.
• Water-cooled diesel with on gearbox mounted hydraulic pumpsets under deck in a well
maintainable spacious environment.
• Easy to observe / check / maintain, slewing motors and slewing ring teeth.
• Marine electric system (for dredge and excavator).
• Illumination for 24 hours working.
• Air-conditioning and heating in the cabin of the excavator.
• Longer life-time for the bearings of the dredging equipment.
• All bearings of the dredging equipment centrally greased, via stainless steel lines (triple
greasing system).
• By-pass float mode for the dredging equipment during spudcarrier moving.
• Bucket cylinder rods are protected by sliding steel structure.
• Forged cylinder rods for monobloc and stick cylinders.
• Spacious cabin for dredging and spud operation.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF A “C-TYPE” DONGE DIPPERDREDGER
Below the main characteristics are given for the BA 600 mounted on a C-type pontoon:
• BA600 marine excavator mounted on a flexible pedestal.
• Bureau Veritas classification, Hull, Mach, loadline certificate.
• Capable to dredge max. 1.50 M wave height.
• Dimensions (standard) : 32.00 x 11.00 x 2.50 M.
• Bureau Veritas classification : dredge pontoon I 3/3, Estuaria.
• Spud length : 24.00 M basic length (or longer)
• Spudbuffering system, spudcarrier with 5,- M stroke.
• Dredging instrumentation; mounted in the cabin of the excavator.
• “Deep Sea” hull; high bow for optimum towing.
• Accommodation according clients instruction.
• “Backacter’s” low noise, water cooled diesel(s), mounted in a separate engine room under
the aft deck.

(not for sailing)

Note: The Backacter 600 can be mounted on a dipperbarge as well. In this execution the
spuds are non-tilting and no spudcarrier is present. It results in a large free deck area.
Whatever the soil density in the bucket… it can be lifted.

• Upper carriage is heat stress relieved.

ESTIMATED STANDARD PRODUCTION
The estimated standard production calculation for the BA600 at 16,- metres depth
with a 3 m³ SAE bucket is approx.120 M³/ hr.
The above calculation is done with the following assumptions.
- Filling degree 90%
- 45 minutes effective production per hour.
- Variables are e.g. : When dredging layer thickness is limited.
: Resistance of bottom.
: barge availability.
: Environmental (currents, waves, etc.).
: Operator, capability/ experience, etc.
: Profile dredging.
