JOIN THE ADULT CHOIR! Do you have a love for music? Do you enjoy working creatively in a group? Do you love to have
fun? If so, joining the adult choir may be just for you! The music ministry is looking for new and returning members for our choir. The adult choir rehearses Wednesday nights at 7pm and leads song
at the high mass Sunday mornings. Last season, the choir had an incredible season filled with many musical highlights. We would love to be able to do even more this year. We need you and your voice.
No prior experience is necessary. Please prayerfully consider joining one of our choirs. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn, worship, and grow in this great parish community.

Some of the things that Our Lord said and did were so revolu onary, so contrary to custom that we find them difficult to believe, let alone prac ce. One such statement is: “Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the needs of all.”
Jesus dared to suggest that the greatest person at a banquet may not be the honored guest at the head table. It well might be one of those men and women who are out there pouring the coffee, serving the food, and cleaning up the tables a er everyone else has gone home.
The greatest person in a school may not be the principal or even one of the members of the PTA. It may be the custodian who loves his family, is loyal to his friends, sweeps the floors with a simile, and is always ready to help in any way that he can.
The greatest person in a na on may not be the president. It may be a schoolteacher who day a er day, gives herself or himself with great devo on to meet the needs of her or his students.
The greatest person in a church may not be the priest. It may be one of the people in the sacristy who helps care for the needs of the day, or someone in the pew who, without noise of fanfare, helps to meet the needs of the poor and homeless.
We could mul ply the examples, but we all get the picture. Yet many of us have difficulty taking this idea of Jesus very seriously. We all admire its idealism. But not many of us are truly convinced that greatness can be achieved only by service. Everything around us seems to argue against that. So we go through life grasping for pres ge and power. Everyone wants to be somebody special. And we think the way to do this through the accumula on of wealth and the exercise of power. What havoc this causes in families and communi es.
Who are the great people of the past – the truly great, those to whom we look with admira on and apprecia-on, those whom we remember the way that we would like to be remembered? Are they not our parents, friends and
rela ves? Let a hundred years go by, and no person has a chance of being thought truly great except one who served and sought to help.
In our own li le part of the world, each of us can be truly great if we are willing to serve the needs of others without fuss or fanfare. We will never become famous that way. It is doub ul that a na onal holiday will ever be declared in our honor. But what does that ma er? If those are the kinds of things that we are a er, then we are s ll in the old system, where those in authority lord it over the rest. But if it is true greatness that we seek, there is only one way to achieve it. We must follow in the footsteps of Jesus who said, “The Son of Man has not come to be served but to serve and to give His life in ransom for many.” Will you follow the Master?

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)
WILL YOU JOIN US IN THIS JOURNEY?
The RCIA is the process by which men and women become members of the Catholic Church. The process begins in
September and culminates at the Easter Vigil in the spring with the recep on of the Sacrament of
Ini a on. Forma on includes several areas: -Scripture: the stories of God’s people.
-Teaching: what Catholics believe. -Prayer: how we communicate with God. -Liturgy: how the community worships.
-Mission: how we live out what we believe. WHO BELONGS IN THE RCIA?
The process of Chris an Ini a on is for adults who… -want to learn more about the Catholic Church.
-are unbap zed and want to become Catholic Chris ans through the sacraments of Bap sm, Confirma on,
and Eucharist. -are bap zed Chris ans (in another faith
tradi on or the Catholic Faith) who want full sacramental membership in the Roman Catholic Church through Confirma on and Eucharist and a end Catholic Church because of a loved one
or spouse and are not sure if the Catholic Church is for them, but are willing to ask ques ons.
HOW DOES IT WORK? God calls and we respond. In the process of Chris an
Ini a on, men and women at all stages of the faith journey come together in a non-threatening,
non-pressured atmosphere to learn more about the Catholic Church as their way of following Jesus. The RCIA provides a forum for shared spiritual growth and a means
to explore the Catholic Chris an tradi on through the scripture, sacraments, church teaching and social
outreach, as part of the Catholic faith community. Classes will begin mid to late September. Please call the Rectory
at 914-779-7345 for more informa on.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY
Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 21, 2016
“My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord, or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges. Endure your trials as discipline. God treats you as sons. At the time all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.” On the day of baptism, the father is instructed similarly, being told ‘you and your wife are the first teachers of your child in the way of faith. May you be the best teachers bearing witness to Christ by what you say and do.’ What a great responsibility, yet we can fail, if we do not know Christ, lack a relationship with Him, are not alive to the life of the church, and living fully the sacrament we are seeking for our child. Discipline is essential, but the way it is carried out makes the difference. We need to learn how to do this. Perhaps the meetings of couples, parent meetings for religious instruction, or the Joseph Ministry, can help our parents, our fathers and mothers, to enjoy their ministry in forming our children. Maybe we never took that course. The Word of God today is our invitation to revisit our unique role as parents.
