AN OPEN LETTER
MAY 2016 Dear Parents / Guardians,
1. Warm greetings from Queenstown Primary School. We hope that this letter finds you well.
Updates…
Staff Movement
2. We extend a warm welcome to Mrs Ong-Lim Lay See, our former HOD/Science who has
recently completed her studies and returned to the Queenstown family.
3. New appointments. Leadership appointment is key to ensuring that we continue to develop a
conducive learning environment and instructional approaches that will enthuse and engage students in
their learning. Assuming new appointments with effect from May are:
Mrs Ong-Lim Lay See School Staff Developer (SSD)
Mr Vincent Lee Kar Leong SH/ICT (Internal)
School Procedures… Discipline Matters 4. We have established the rules and regulations for student conduct in our school. They are
intended as a basis for the development of positive attitudes and appropriate behaviour on the part of
students as well as to promote and maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Thus, should
there be any matters of concern especially those relating to the discipline and conduct of our students,
we request that parents/guardians bring this to the attention of our staff for investigation and resolution.
Please do not engage another parent directly or discipline a child who is not your own. Students
determined to be at fault will face appropriate consequence(s) in accordance to the school’s discipline
guidelines.
Thanksgiving… International Friendship Day (IFD) 2016
5. The theme for this year’s IFD is ASEAN. The IFD week started out with an assembly
programme with insights into the history and objectives of ASEAN as well as the celebration of our
warm ties with ASEAN and beyond through clips and lively dance performances. This was followed by a 3-day programme wholly put together by our Queenstown Parent Support Group (QtPSG) in which our Media Resource Library (MRL) was turned into a hive of activities with vibrant and interactive
booths showcasing the cultures of the different nationalities and races. The various activities offer
insights that enhance our students’ global awareness and their appreciation of common values like
respect and responsibility that different nations share.
6. We are grateful for the strong support and invaluable contribution from our QtPSG. Their
efforts have not only enabled our students to learn more about ASEAN and other countries. The IFD
Activities @ MRL were also extended to students from Rainbow Centre. Parents, thank you for making
a difference for students in QtPS and Rainbow Centre! You are awesome!

Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation 2016
4. The SYF Arts Presentation for our participating Performing Arts CCA groups has been
completed. CCA is a good platform to build students’ character and inculcate school values such as
perseverance, quality work and self-discipline. We celebrate every effort made and achievement earned by our students. It gives us great pleasure to share with you our achievements at the SYF Arts
Presentation:

5. Congratulations to all participants! Such positive results would not have been possible without
the dedicated hard and heart work of our teachers and instructors. Thank you, teachers and instructors!
6. To celebrate the growing talent of the members of our Performing Arts groups, these SYF items,
together with items from our Choir and Drama Club, will be showcased at our Open House Concert on
Saturday, 16 July. Let’s support our students with our presence at the concert!

evaluate themselves in the effectiveness and efficiency of the unit’s programme and activities while
ensuring that the students benefit fully from its programme which focuses on holistic character
development. Congratulations, boys! The J M Fraser Award for Excellence 2016 will certainly spur all
of you to continue your efforts to make excellence a way of life! Keep it up!
Raffles Institution Primary Mathematics World Contest (RIPMWC) 2016

part in the competition. He spoke on the topic, ‘An Indian Festival I celebrated’ and away with the First
Prize! Congratulations, Srivatssan!
Up-coming events… SA 1 matters
13. All P3 – P6 students will be sitting for their SA 1. The time table for the SA 1 examinations,
including the topics to be tested, has been given to each child. Please guide your child in planning
his/her daily revision. As assessments are an integral part of the school curriculum, any absence from
school examinations must be supported by a medical certificate. As mentioned earlier, the school will
not administer make-up exam for students who are absent for written examination. Should your child
be unable to take the assessment due to valid reasons, please be assured that he/she will not be penalised
in this examination.
e-Learning Day cum Meet-the-Parents Session
14. Thursday, 26 May, is the school’s eLearning Day cum Meet-the-Parents Session. On this day,
all students do not report to school. Instead, they will access the school’s subscribed Learning
Management portal, MC Online, at their stipulated time, to learn and do the assigned work. This e-
learning exercise is also to ensure the school's readiness for Home-Based Learning (HBL) in the event
of an emergency.
15. For families who do not have computer and/or Internet access, your children may access the e-
learning in school. Our Computer laboratories 2 and 3 will be opened that day from 8.00 am to 3.00 pm.
The e-learning instructions and information will be disseminated to all students through their respective
form teachers nearer the date.
16. The day is set aside for parents to meet with their child’s teachers to discuss his/her progress
and to collect his/her Report Book. You will receive an invitation from your child’s form teacher nearer
the date. Please indicate on the response slip any alternative arrangement if you are unable to meet the
teachers on the date set aside for this event.
17. Incidentally, our Learning Management portal is available 24/7 for access. Students can keep
up with their lessons at home by logging in to access the fun and interactive online resources for English,
Mother Tongue, Mathematics and Science at their own time.

Swimming Carnival
18. Our 14th Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday, 27 May, in the morning at the Clementi Swimming Complex. The Guest-of-Honour for the occasion is Mr Kalai Vanen, the 2015 ASEAN Para
Games powerlifter, who became a para-athlete after losing his left leg to cancer nearly 30 years ago.
19. The carnival caters to students of various swimming competencies. For the strong swimmers,
they will compete in races such as the 50-metres Breast Stroke, Freestyle and Back Stroke, and provide
them a chance to see who is the fastest in the water. There will also be exciting water games such as the
Flippa Ball (a game similar to water polo) and Telematch (made up of a Treasure Hunt and Obstacle
Course) for the non-swimmers. The water games will be played in the 1-metre deep training pool.
20. As the venue is unable to accommodate all the students from the school, we will only be inviting
P3 and P4 students as spectators. A separate letter will be issued through your child. All P1, P2 and P5
students who are non-participants need not report to school on that day. P6 students will report to school
as usual for their lessons.
Open House
21. We are holding an Open House on Saturday, 16 July, from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm, on our school
premises. This is a good platform for the school to share with the community our facilities, programmes
and achievements. Through this effort, we hope to maintain increasing student intake at the P1
registration for admission in 2017. If you know of friends who are considering a school to register their
child in, do work with us to recommend QtPS to them.

Concluding Remarks…
“Positive thoughts generate positive feelings and attract positive life experiences.”
~ Anonymous
23. Indeed, our thoughts create our moods and our emotions, shaping our lives, for good or bad.
Whatever situations we are in is a direct result of what we thought. Parents, work with us to encourage
our children to be positive thinkers who see potential and to turn obstacles into opportunities.
24. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all mothers and fathers, a blessed and happy
Mother’s Day & Father’s Day! Thank you and have a wonderful month ahead!
Warmest Regards,
Mrs Grace Chua Mrs Helen Tan Mdm Poon Pei Ping Principal Vice-Principal Vice-Principal

“MOMMY & DAD,
I’M PROUD OF YOU!” This was the response Chan Yi Jun (P4 Joy) gave
when he was asked about his feeling knowing that
both his parents are leaders in QtPSG.
“Do you like them involve in your school?
“Yes. I get to see them in school. I know they
organize things (activities) and they work with a team of parents.”
“Do you want to be a leader someday?”
“Yes, because I get to help others, including my friends, families & charities.”
Christopher Chan is the Team Manager for Fathers@QtPS & Selina Wee is the Exco for AMRead.
