YouTube video “World Freehand Circle Drawing Champion”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAhfZUZiwSE
Try to draw a “perfect circle” on your own paper. How did it go? How did others do?
Some will look at this and say he just taught them to draw a perfect circle. But did he? It’s a great demonstration and a fabulous hook. But just demonstrating something we as teachers understand doesn’t automatically make it so his students can do it. There is a difference between talking, teaching, and learning.
What would need to happen for us to really learn how to draw a perfect circle?

FYI - I HATE THE TERM
Friday, April 26, 13
I really hate the label “Flipped Classroom”. It’s catchy but it “pigeon holes” what I did in my classroom.
Aaron Sams always says “There’s no such thing as THE Flipped Classroom” meaning there are lots of different ways to use flipping to meet the needs of your students.

IT’S NOT “EITHER/OR”

Misconception #1 - “I’m either flipping or I’m _____”
You’re not flipping or doing inquiry . . . flipper or constructivist
![Page 6: An Introduction to Flipped Learning - 2013 UP MACUL Conference](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051609/54795bdab4af9fd3158b47ea/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
ONE TOOL IN A VERY LARGE TOOLBOX
CC image “Chronicles of Andrew Part 1” by Off beat Mum via FlickrFriday, April 26, 13
Flipping does not turn a bad teacher into a good teacher. The only way flipping works is if you start with an effective teacher and give them more flexibility working with their students.
Flipping is meant to be one tool in a very large teacher toolbox.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT VIDEOSOR TECHNOLOGY
CC Image “New Computer Lab” by Terry McComb via Flickr
Friday, April 26, 13
This is one of the biggest misconceptions on Flipped Learning. Khan Academy is not the flipped classroom. It is a resource. Videos are a resource. If you think students can effectively learn chemistry, physics, or any other subject by only watching videos you are missing the point.
Flipped Learning is most effective when technology is allowed to do what it does best (make content reviewable and accessible any time) while also allowing teachers to do what they do best (build relationships, differentiate instruction, make connections, etc)
![Page 8: An Introduction to Flipped Learning - 2013 UP MACUL Conference](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051609/54795bdab4af9fd3158b47ea/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)

These are some of my former students. They have a wide range of interests and abilities yet they are all in the same class along with 20+ other students. How can I make sure they are all learning and getting the attention they need to succeed. “One size fits all” teaching is convenient (and traditional) but it doesn’t work if we really want every student to be successful.

The Problem With My Classroom
Friday, April 26, 13
Learning basics as a group in a “one size fits all” is ineffective. Some already get it. Some need more help.
Sending students home to work on higher order assignments individually leads to frustration.
