As a recent graduate of the CIDA Accredited Interior Design program at Kansas State University, I am eager to shift my focus from hypothetical studio projects to real, impactful environments. The Interior Design Bachelor of Science degree program at KSU is part of the College of Human Ecology- which has given me a unique sensitivity to the way interiors impact the human experience and a sense of responsibility for upholding the values of human-centered design. As I begin my career, I hope to find a place where I can combine the design knowledge I have acquired with my love for people to be able to enrich spaces and lives through my work.
“Good design begins with honesty, asks tough questions, comes from collaboration and from trusting your intuition.” - Freeman Thomas

Concept Statement
Juniper, a conceptual women’s boutique in the eclectic West Village shopping district of Dallas, Texas, provides an alternative to the fast-fashion culture that exists among many of today’s most well-known women’s retailers. The goal of the design is to create an environment that uses an abstraction of the juniper tree to embody the idea that each woman is a beautiful and unique being with her own important story. Richly textured finishes, individualized service, and consideration for the social realities of shopping reinforce this feeling in the store.

2 Samsung KioskExhibit
2013
Concept StatementThe kiosk was designed to be a structural advertisement for the Galaxy S4. Inspiration came from Samsung’s Vision 2020, which states that innovation, creativity, and inspiring the world are Samsung’s goals for the future. The clean, light-filled kiosk appears to be reaching towards the sky, and stands out from the surrounding architecture as a monument to the vision of Samsung.

A study model was employed to help us refine the shape of the kiosk and understand the challenges that could arise during its construction.
The development of the design was conceptually driven, but was further refined by a detailed analysis of typical customer interaction.

Concept Statement
Next is a think-tank organization in Dallas, Texas that fosters entrepreneurs by providing them with a team of professionals and a place to work. The design of the office is heavily influenced by human behavior research. Things like intergenerational employees, work mode transitions, workplace amenity trends, and color psychology influenced the space. A common conceptual theme of “flow” became apparent during the research phase, and is incorporated into the design through curves, directional lines, and arrows. Next is a place where employees are free to flow freely between work modes to accommodate their individual needs and preferences.

Think Tank
The think tank is a place for new ideas to form, and for creative solutions to emerge. The color scheme of this room is kept neutral to allow the dynamic, and sometimes messy, process of creation to shine. Plenty of space is provided to work and move, and mediums for spontaneous sharing cover the walls of the room.

Open Office
Most of the desk spaces are in the open office. There are individual desks as well as places for collaboration and socialization. Since Next is a highly collaborative company, openness is practical, but employees that find it too distracting have the option of moving to an adjacent private enclave to work.

Project Rooms
There are three project rooms in the space, each with a different layout. One, the nearest to the reception area, is more formal and can be used as a space to meet with clients. The other two are casual and smaller. Project rooms can serve as a quiet space for individuals or a private meeting space for groups.

The warmth created when melting fondue is captured by the mood of Immerse. Focusing on the rhythm of curved surfaces, guests are immersed in fluidity; reinforcing the essential character of the space. Simplistic design components such as solid woods and clean, smooth surfaces represent the essence of fondue’s origin country, Switzerland. The architectural and interior elements express the warmth of not only the food, but also the immersion in the people and culture of Manhattan, Kansas.

Site Analysis
A visit to the site gave insight into things like traffic patterns, surrounding shops and businesses, and the overall character of the location and clientele. Further research was compiled to create a complete picture of the area’s demographic, including a list of competing restaurants.

A Living Machine on the northern side of the terrace enables water harvesting. Rainwater is collected and filtered for use as greywater in the building. Locally-growing vegetation and the curved walls of the planter and benches tie-in the concept of fluidity and immersion.
Guest Rooms
Art from local, Kansas artists adorn the walls of the guest rooms to make guests feel immersed in Kansas culture. The bathroom walls are made of Smart Glass, which can be turned opaque at the flip of a switch- bringing the idea of state-change into the rooms.

2012
Concept Statement
The design of this office space was inspired by the style, adventure and sense of community associated with owning a Vespa. Bold red accents give life to the space, and images of Vespa owners with a fun independent aura are distributed through the office. The reception desk has digital windows that are continually refreshed with new In-stagram photos from Vespa-lovers around the world. In the work area, community is encouraged by multiple open and comfortable collaboration areas.
Giant, stretched-fabric screens in the gallery provide a backdrop for video projection that can set the mood for any number of occasions.

2011
Concept Statement
The space is designed to reflect the client’s appreciation for early 20th century history, without detracting from the visual portrayal of his contemporary success as a marketing executive. Inspiration for the aesthetic came from the designers and artists of the 1920-30’s, whose ideals are embodied in the minimalist elements and exposed natural materials in the loft. The natural environment was also considered in this design, and sustainable specifications were made wherever possible.

Project Description
A collection of various projects that have been done outside of the interior design studio. These works were completed with the skills learned in drawing and graphic design courses that, while mainly serving as a platform for practicing fine art and computer illustration, also provided a new way to think about concept communication, material choices and 2D spatial organization.
