What Makes a Friend?
Main Ideas
Friendship is a valuable relationship and it is important to be able to recognize traits, characteristics and qualities that you look for in a friend.

Objective
The students will be able to express what they find to be valuable traits, characteristics, and qualities of an ideal friend by creating their own three-dimensional friend.
Guided Activity
Keeping Hansel and Gretel’s friendship in mind for inspiration…
Students will share in small groups what they think makes a great friend.
After students have discussed in small groups, they will be asked to share a bit of what they thought up with the rest of the class.
Allow students to individually make a list of what characteristics and traits they value in a friend.
The Project
Grade Level: 3rd Estimated Time: Approximately 3-4 hours
over a week of class periods
Vocabulary: Values-Principles or standards Characteristics- A defining feature
The Project/Procudure
Materials include but are not limited to Shoe box, Toilet paper rolls, Empty tissue box, Paper cups, Yarn, Hot glue gun, Elmer’s glue, Scotch tape, Scissors, Pencil, Construction paper, Markers , Cardboard
Students will create their own “three-dimensional friends” with objects inside to represent values their ideal friend would have.

Evaluation
Informal: Students will be asked to share their projects with each other and give feedback.
Formal: The student’s projects will be graded formally based on the following rubric.
