FLY?

Page 3: Airplanes

There are four basic forces involved in flight…

What are they?

Page 4: Airplanes

Thrust – the force pushing or pulling the plane forward by a propeller or a jet engine

Drag – the opposing force of the air resisting this motion

THRUST AND DRAG

A plane will only move forward if the force of the thrust exceeds the drag

Page 5: Airplanes

Weight pulls the plane down to earth due to gravity

Lift opposes this force and allows a plane to get off the ground

WEIGHT AND LIFT

Page 6: Airplanes

BERNOULLI PRINCIPLE

- Lift is caused by deflection of air over the wing

- Air goes faster over the top of the wing

- The faster a fluid moves, the lower the pressure

- The difference in pressure around the wing causes lift

You will each be given a bag of the same type of materials

You are required to use at least 3 different types of materials on your glider

Mentors will give you a predetermined amount of tape to use to secure your glider

You will be judged on:

▪ creativity

▪ design

▪ ability to fly
