NEW PHILADELPHIABetween the art deco-style movie house in downtown to popular one-of-a-kind shops, New Philadelphia has some
stories to tell. Tuscora Park boasts a ferris wheel, miniature train ride and the showpiece of the park:
a carousel with 36 hand carved horses. If you’re a history seeker, Schoenbrunn (pronounced ‘shun-brunn’) is the real start of our county’s heritage, when in 1772 Moravian missionaries founded the village to help bring Christianity to
the Delaware Indians. Hearing and seeing our history come alive on the outdoor stage is ‘Trumpet
in the Land’ which recreates the Schoenbrunn, Fort Laurens and Gnadenhutten history (showing June - August).
BOLIVARIt was a cold, blustery, snowy day in November 1778 when the American Militia left Fort Pitt and walked as far as they could before setting up camp to build Fort Laurens. Exhibits at the museum tell of the hardships, lengthy seige by Native Americans and an end of the Revolutionary War during the early years of Ohio history. The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail, an 80-mile long recreational trail, passes alongside the beautiful Tuscarawas River and connects Zoar and Fort Laurens.
SUGARCREEK“Oom pah pah” bands are a popular sound in “The Little Switzerland of Ohio” and you can hear the Hilltop Singers every 30 minutes when the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock characters make their turn around the timepiece. Or dance to real life-size bands during the annual Swiss Festival including the annual “steintossen” and, of course Swiss Cheese. Also in the village is Alpine Hills Museum which in addition to its Swiss stories, tells visitors about cheese making, woodworking and the history of the Amish and Mennonite in the area.
ZOARRecently named a National Historic Landmark, Zoar Village still looks much like the Zoarites left it. Settled in the early 1800’s the communal society lasted until 1898 and was one of the most successful communal endeavors anywhere. This is a ‘Must-See’ village that just celebrated its bicentennial.
DOVEREbony and Ivory is a famous song, but did you know it was also material used by Ernest “Mooney” Warther to carve 64 working trains? The Ernset Warther Museum houses the working models along with a “pliers tree” and his wife’s 73,000 + button collection. TV sets of interest? Well then we have the museum for you! Watch 1950’s television shows on a 1950’s TV–and yes, it will be broadcast in black and white. A museum at a funeral home? Yep, we have that too. The Toland-Herzig Famous
Endings Museum may seem ghoulish but with over 1,700 items from such famous folks as Mother Theresa or Jesse James, this collection is more of a tribute to those no longer with us. The Victorian era is featured at the J.E. Reeves Home which houses the family furnishings of a Dover industrialist and steel magnet along with Dover’s history. Making a clean sweep of museums in Dover is John’s Sweeper Service and Museum which houses historic vacuum cleaners along with modern models.
50th Anniversary
5 TUSCARAWAS COUNTY
DENNISON Dennison was called “Dreamsville” by the 1.3 million GIs who passed through during WWII who received free coffee, sandwiches, and donuts on their way to the war. Today the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum has lovingly restored not only the Depot but the train cars that travelled the routes from Columbus to Pittsburgh.
Coming soon - An authentic Pullman car you can actually sleep in.
GNADENHUTTEN Theodore Roosevelt called this the ‘black stain on the frontier character that time cannot wash away.’ The massacre of Gnadenhutten (pronounced ‘GA-naught-ten-hutten’) is a sobering reminder of Tuscarawas County’s place during the Revolutionary War and the massacre of 96 Christian Indians in 1782 by American militia. Today the museum, monument and cabins remind us of that story.

UHRICHSVILLE Uhrichsville, once known as the “Clay Capital of the World” captures that history in the Clay Museum. Visitors will be drawn to the display of “whimsies,” that workers at the areas two dozen clay manufacturers produced just for fun. Plans call for
a beehive kiln to be built at a larger facility near to the current museum so children of all ages can learn the process of mud to vitrification–in other words–soft clay to useful household items.
NEWCOMERSTOWNImagine a town where all the shops have real shopkeepers dressed in 1940’s clothing and they are reminding visitors to get their ration coupons before going to the store. And then imagine that those same shop keepers bring out an old tunable radio and you hear the crackly voice of the announcer telling the world that the war has ended. That is just one of the programs at the Olde Main Street Museum and Social Center with its 23 reconstructed storefronts and such items as a machine serving “electrocuted hot dogs.”
