LOTTIE GREGORY
A Memory
Margaret Warnock
Members of the U3A Spanish Class were shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death
in July of Lottie Gregory, the leader and much valued Spanish tutor of our class for the last
two years.
Lottie gave of her knowledge with enthusiasm and warmth and we will miss her greatly. We
discovered a little of her very full and active life through our conversations (mostly in
Spanish!) each week and, since her death, have learnt more about the breadth of her
interests, her generosity and her amazing energy.
A graduate in French and Spanish, Lottie worked as an administrator at the University of
Stirling, firstly in the Macrobert Centre and then in the School of Education, playing a
crucial role in the setting up and running of SCILT, the Scottish Centre for Information on
Language Teaching. A keen walker and cyclist, she climbed all the Munroes, and then
proceeded to climb the Corbetts, completing this achievement in 2016. She was a good
golfer and for many years she was a member of the Dunblane Golf Club, serving as
Women's Captain for a while. After her retirement she was a founding member and leader of
the Stirling University Retired Staff Association Walking Group, and for several years she
passed on her love of the Spanish language by teaching undergraduates following the
beginners' Spanish course at the University. Recently she had been teaching English to
refugees in Falkirk.
She had three children: Andrew, Susan and Thomas and loved to spend time with them and
her grandchildren. Our thoughts go out to them at this sad time.
Finally, it seems fitting to quote some of the tributes that flooded in from the class on
hearing of Lottie’s passing:
“Lottie was always so bright and enthusiastic, such a lovely person and so eager to help us
all with our Spanish - one of the best teachers.”
“She was kind and very generous with her time and knowledge - a great teacher and an
inspiring person.”
“She was such a lovely person and so tolerant and patient in teaching us.”
“[I] found her to be very kind and warm and encouraging and interesting and was very
grateful for her really excellent tuition - she put a lot of thought, time and effort into helping
us all improve - a great generosity of spirit. She was so lively it’s hard to think she’s gone.”
The new C&WP Committee will meet after the AGM to agree the date of the next meeting
