Scene I
Plot Summary
Macbeth comes to the witches and demands to know the truth about his prophecy.
Summon 4 apparitions› 1. An armored head› 2. A bloody child› 3. A crowned child › 4. 8 kings and Banquo
1st apparition warns Macbeth of Macduff
2nd apparition says Macbeth will not be killed by a man born from a woman
3rd apparition says Macbeth is safe until the Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill
Macbeth still not satisfied› Asks if Banquo’s prophecy will be fulfilled
Witches warn against finding out more› 4th apparition appears-line of kings
Lennox tells Macbeth that Macduff has fled to England.
Macbeth decides to send murderers to kill Macduff’s wife and children.

Scene II
Plot Summary
Lady Macduff is angry that her husband fled and left her and her children defenseless
Does not flee when told to because she argues that she is innocent
Lady Macduff tells her son that his father is dead
Son refuses to believe this and stands up for his father
Murderers arrive
Kill Lady Macduff, her children, and the servants

Scene III
Plot Summary
Malcolm’s test of Macduff› Tells Macduff he is lustful, greedy, and violent› Macduff disagrees at first› Admits that scares him for the sake of Scotland› Therefore, passes the test
Malcolm is pleased that Macduff has shown himself to be loyal to Scotland, NOT JUST to whoever happens to be on Scotland’s throne.
Ross enters and speaks of the horrors taking place in Scotland.
Later confesses to Macduff that his wife and children are dead
Macduff announces that he will use his anger to get revenge and kill Macbeth
