CONDUCT EXPERIMENTS WITH PROFESSOR SCIENCE
Make a balloon blow up on its own!
Be sure to ask an adult to help you with these experiments. They may get messy!
diet soda*(any kind)
mint candyballoon (10” round works best.)
WHAT YOU NEED:
HOW IT WORKS: 1. When the mint candy drops into the soda bottle, it starts a reaction that releases carbon dioxide.2. As the mint candy sinks to the bottom of the bottle of soda, more carbon dioxide gas is released.3. The carbon dioxide gas fills the balloon!4. Soda is made with carbon dioxide gas, which are the little bubbles you see when you pour soda into a glass.5. Though you can’t see them, the surface of the mint candy has little pockets or depressions. When the mint candy comes in contact with the soda, it allows the carbon dioxide in the soda to be released, creating the gas that fills the balloon.6. You can do many variations of this experiment: a. Try different types of mint candy. (I have found that Mentos work best.) b. Try different size bottles of diet soda and see if there is a difference. c. You may even want to experiment with the temperature of the soda — room temperature soda versus refrigerated soda. Which temperature works best to blow up the balloon? Does the temperature of the soda make a difference?
*Diet soda is recommended since it does not have sugar. If things get messy, sugar makes a sticky mess. Diet soda makes it easier to clean.
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Do this experiment outside or in a sink. It tends to get messy!2. Take the cap off of the diet soda.3. Put one piece of mint candy inside the balloon.4. Stretch and secure the open end of the balloon around the open end of the soda bottle. Pull the balloon down to the bottom of where the cap would screw on. Make sure the mint doesn’t get into the soda bottle yet!5. When you are ready to start the experiment, lift the balloon and let the mint candy drop into the bottle of soda6. Step back from the bottle and balloon. Watch what happens!
Remember: read all the instructions before you begin your experiments.

CONDUCT EXPERIMENTS WITH PROFESSOR SCIENCEBe sure to ask an adult to help you with these experiments. They may get messy!
Create the colors of the rainbow!
water a spoon andmeasuring cup
6 plastic cups(clear cups work best)
food coloring:blue, red and yellow
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Pour water into three plastic cups. Fill each cup about two thirds of the way.2. Place three drops of blue food coloring into the first cup and mix with a spoon. Wipe spoon after use.3. Place three drops of yellow food coloring into the second cup and mix with a spoon. Wipe spoon. 4. Place three drops of red food coloring into the third cup and mix with a spoon. Wipe spoon. 5. Pour ¼ cup of the blue water into an empty cup, then add ¼ cup yellow water. Watch what happens!6. Pour ¼ cup of the red water into an empty cup, then add ¼ cup blue water. Watch what happens!7. Pour ¼ cup of the yellow water into an empty cup, then add ¼ cup red water. Watch what happens!8. You can make up your own experiment by mixing different colored water together and see what happens.
HOW IT WORKS:
1. Blue, red and yellow are primary colors and make up ALL the other colors in the rainbow.2. Blue and yellow make green.3. Red and blue make purple.4. Yellow and red make orange.5. See what other colors you can make by mixing different colors together.
Remember: read all the instructions before you begin your experiments.
HAVE FUN!

QUICK TRICK The Disappearing Cards!
This is one of my favorite card tricks!
Remember: magicians always keep their secrets.
Now, here is the secret. You really only have two cards. One regular card — the five of hearts and one special card. The special card has four cards printed on one side and Mr. Oops printed on the other.
TO PERFORM:
Reach into the envelope and pull out the special card — making sure the Mr. Oops side is showing. Be careful not to show the other side of the card!
Say that Mr. Oops has made all of the other cards disappear, then show that your envelope is empty.
Show your audience five cards. Place them into an envelope and then take out one of the cards, showing it all around. Then say the magic word, “Abracadabra!” and tell your audience that the other cards are gone from your envelope. Reach into the envelope and pull out the only remaining card — it is a picture of Mr. Oops saying that the other cards have disappeared! Show that your envelope is really empty. The rest of the cards have disappeared!
WHAT YOUR AUDIENCE WILL SEE.
For more quick tricks, visit 11
INSTRUCTIONS: Be sure to read all the instructions before you make your cards. 1. Turn to page 21. You will find the front of the five of hearts card and the back with the Abracadabra logo. Cut out the card inside the dotted line, fold on the solid line and glue them together — making sure that one side shows the five of hearts and the other shows the Abracadabra logo.
2. Cut out the special card inside the dotted line — the one with four cards printed on one side and Mr. Oops on the back. Fold in half and glue it together in the same way as before. Now you are ready to perform!
Before you begin, place the five of hearts on top of the special card (with the four-card side up). It makes it look like your are holding “five cards.” Be careful not to show the back of the special card.
Once you show the “five cards,” place them in your envelope.
Pull out the real five of hearts and show it all around then place it on the table.
Now, say “Abracadabra!”
