Acids and Alkalis
Unit E
Do Now:• Match the acid with the chemical formula:
Hydrochloric Acid H2SO4
Nitric Acid HCl
Sulphuric Acid HNO3
What element do each acid have in common?
Danger in Acids!
• Concentrated – stronger, more pure acid– More harmful, irritant
• Diluted – an acid made weaker by adding water to it
Warning Signs
Activity:
• Cut out and match the warning sign to the hazard. Then determine an example of each.
Do Now:
• What common acids can you find at home?
Properties of Acids
• Common Acids at Home:– Citric Acid– Phosphoric Acid– Ethanoic Acid (Acetic Acid)
• Tastes:– Sour– Tangy
Warning!!!Do NOT try to drink
an unknown liquid to find out if it is an
acid!!
Activity:
• Sample the following liquids• Create a chart describing the taste• Determine which is an acid
Do Now:
• Glue a pH scale into your notebooks
Alkali
• Alkali – Also known as a base– Opposite of an acid– Used in soaps
The pH Scale
• Litmus Paper – turns color to determine if a substance is an acid, alkali, or neutral
Indicators
• Other indicators exist that test if a substance is an acid or an alkali
Activity
• Test each of the substances with pH paper and record the color and estimate the pH
• Place a drop into each substance and record the results in a table
• Determine which substance is an acid, an alkali and neutral
Do Now:
• Break up into groups of 2• 1 person from the group get a laptop and log
in
Activity
• Create a poster of the pH scale• Research examples of different common
substances that have different pHs and place on your poster
