HLN EVENTS:
BRINGING OURCOMMUNITYTOGETHERTampa, Florida: Tuesday, August 28th,
HLN hosted a full days worth of events that
kicked off with a Merienda Lunch Reception
featuring The Honorable Jeb Bush and Gover-
nors Susana Martinez (NM) and Brian San-
doval (NV) in a Governors Policy Conversation.
The Governors discussed jobs and the econ-
omy, education, how to grow small business,
and healthcare. The Honorable Jeb Bush
opened the discussion with an in-depth de-scription of his education policy and the com-
prehensive strategy he implemented during
his time as Governor of Florida that resulted
in marked improvements to the states educa-
tion system, with Hispanic students making
some of the largest gains. Governors Martinez
and Sandoval followed up on his remarks with
their own discussion of their policies, ranging
from education to increasing access to capital
for small businesses, which are improving op-
portunities and the quality of life for their
states residents. Governor Bush detailed his
deep connection to the Hispanic community,
while Governors Martinez and Sandoval each
shared their moving personal stories of how
they came to realize they were conservatives.

Following the lunch reception, HLN hosted
a policy panel entitled The Health of Your
Financial Security that featured Congressman
Ral Labrador (ID-1); Doug Holtz-Eakin, Presi-
dent of the American Action Forum; and
Massey Villarreal, CEO of Precision Task Group,
Inc. Teresa Rodrguez, co-anchor of Univisions
Aqu y Ahora, moderated the policy panel,
which featured opening remarks by Governor
of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuo. Governor Fortuo
spoke about how he has implemented tax re-form, cut regulations, and grown the Puerto
Rican economy.
Teresa Rodrguez opened the panel with re-
marks about the growing Hispanic community,
its purchasing power, and importance of eco-
nomic development for this key demographic
as a driving force behind Americas future eco-
nomic success. Among the many highlights
from the panel discussion were Congressman
Labradors insights, as a former small business
owner and current Congressman, on the need
for less regulation and his criticism of the Pa-
tient Protection Affordable Care Act that does
not protect patients nor make healthcare

affordable. Doug Holtz-Eakin noted that
economic growth is necessary for financial
security because growth will help to alleviate
the current ills of high unemployment. Both
Congressman Labrador and Doug Holtz-
Eakin commended Governor Fortuos efforts
to implement tax reform and put Puerto Rico
back on track for economic growth. Massey
Villarreal, who started his business with oneemployee and has grown his business to 240
employees provided unique insight into the
Latino community and the impediments that
it faces as a non-traditional banking and en-
trepreneurial community that requires im-
proved financial literacy. He highlighted that
under the Patient Protection and Affordable
Care Act his employee healthcare costs will
double. The panel concluded with all pan-
elists agreeing that we must first restore the
confidence of investors and business owners
to spur growth to ensure the financial security
of current and future generations.
Senator Marco Rubio opened the evening
reception with poignant remarks on topics
including his experience with the AmericanDream, the entrepreneurial spirit of the
Hispanic community, and the benefits of the
American free enterprise system. He outlined
the need for limited government that sets out
predictable rules. He concluded by highlighting
the need for real reform of our immigration
system and that we should not be afraid to
address this important issue.

Like the rest of the country, were (the Hispanic Community) worried about jobs and the economy.
Thats the most important issue.
Jennifer S. Korn, Executive Director, Hispanic Leadership Network
The Tampa TribuneThe number one issue among Hispanic voters this will be a big surprise to you is the economy,
and jobs, and opportunity," he said. "A second one is, 'Who shares my values?' A third one is, 'Who
is going to help me deal with my child trapped in a failing school?' Those are the issues that matter.

focus, getting an education, and being inspired you can do anything you want.

Official recognition of our Hispanic
Heritage began in 1968, when President
Lyndon Johnson established Hispanic
Heritage Week. Ronald Reagan, saw
the importance of honoring the
many contributions that Hispanic
men and women have made to
American history, signed a bill into
law that expanded that week to a full
month to cover the 30 days between
September 15 and October 15. The
day of September 15 is significant for
the Hispanic community because it is
the anniversary of independence for
many Latin American countries:
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition,
Mexico and Chile celebrate their
independence on September 16 and
18, respectively.

on Tuesday, September 25th during National VoterRegistration Day. HLN will also co-host a Debate Watch
Party in Denver, Colorado on October 3rd for the first
Presidential Debate. For more information please visit
