BELIMO ball valve in a compressed air application
(e.g. R225 with NM rotary actuator)
Task
To reduce compressed air leakage lossesin the manufacturing process
Pneumatic devices aid and simplify a widevariety of manufacturing steps. The productionof the necessary compressed air involves con-siderable costs. The compressed air is storedin pressure vessels. At times when there is noneed for the compressed air (e.g. end of pro-duction), the pneumatic devices have a certainleakage rate and the vessel either loses pres-sure, or the compressor starts filling up thepressure vessel again.
SolutionThe solution is to seal the pressure vesselusing a suitable shut-off control device thatallows no air bubbles to escape. VariousBELIMO ball valves with a choice of rotaryactuators are available for this purpose. Thecriteria for the design are either the existingpipe dimensions, or the effective flow rate andpressure ratio.

Payback
To produce 1 m3/h compressed air where
the mains pressure is 6 bars costs approxi-mately 0.01 to 0.03 (source: www.druckluft-effizient.de). Average consumption is approx-imately 10 Nm3/h. When the production plantis shut down, the leakage rate is approximately30%. With a two-shift system, compressed airconsumption per annum is
approximately 200 (working days)x 10 hours x 10 m3/h x 0.3 (leakage rate)x 0.02 = 120 .
(The leakage rate refers to the flexible con-nections downstream of the distributor and thecompressed air tools used.)
The payback time per motorized valve isless than 1.5 years.

Experience
Twenty-two control valves were installed inthe new BELIMO LONGUS building a yearago and have been functioning perfectly sincethen. The rotary actuators are controlled bythe so-called MP bus. Eight of these
actuators are connected to a LON interface(UK24LON) using a 2-wire system.A higher-level LON controller controls all theBELIMO ball valves as they are needed.
