PREFACE Ø The ‘Black Book 2014’ is a compilation of
information about all Fatal Road Accidents that have occurred in U.T. Chandigarh for the last 5 years (2009-2013). This ‘Ready Reckoner’ on Fatal Road Accidents shall facilitate the sharing of accident related information by the Road Safety Cell of the Chandigarh Traffic Police with all other Government Departments that are involved in the prevention of Road Accidents. The information shall also be made freely available to other socially conscious organisations and citizens who may provide fresh insights for developing effective strategies for the prevention of road accidents. This compilation also aims at generating debate and discussion, especially through the agency of print media, regarding the causes of road accidents and the steps that need to be adopted for their prevention.
Ø Geographical area of the city is 114 sq. kms. Ø Total population of Chandigarh is over 11
lakhs. Ø Vehicular population of the city is more than
8.8 Lacs which is the highest per capita vehicular population in the country.
Ø Everyday more than 100 vehicles are added in U.T. Chandigarh.
Ø Total road length of Chandigarh is 1536 kms.
Ø More than 117 lives are being lost every year in Chandigarh

Ø Approximately 1,39,000 lives are lost every year in India and the total loss of productivity due to road accidents is 3% of GDP (approx. Rs. 1 lakh crore) every year
Ø In India, 10.83 persons killed in road accidents per 100000.
Ø One road accident takes place every minute and one fatality every four minutes in the country.
