Skills expo for prisoners
Inmates at the education expo, to help them gain study or work opportunities
THE third annual DarwinCorrectional CentrePrisoner Education Expowas opened yesterday,with a record 30 educationand training providerstaking part.
Opened by the Ministerfor Correctional Services,John Elferink, the expo isdesigned to further equiplow security prisonersnearing the ends of theirsentences with the skills tostudy or gain employmenton their release.
‘‘Meaningful employmentis a proven factor inlessening a person’schances of re-offending,’’said DCC SuperintendentKevin Raby.
‘‘That can only lead to asafer community for allTerritorians.’’
Prisoners were givenskills in resume-writing andself-analysis and were eachrequired to gather contact
details from agencies thatcould assist in achievingpost-release education andemployment goals.

said the 2012 expo was agreat hit with the prisonersand the growing interest inthe event from outsideagencies gave the
department encouragementthat more prisoners wouldbe released to realemployment opportunitiesin the future.
Tax officeemail scamtricksthousandsTHOUSANDS of Australianshave potentially beencaught out by asophisticated home-grownemail ‘‘phishing’’ scam thatpretended to be fromtax officials.
Around 70 million emailswere pinged out on August30 — more than one in 25 ofall emails sent that day —claiming to be from theAustralian Taxation Officeand warning people about aproblem with their taxreturn. Anti-virus companyTrend Micro said most ofthe scam emails wereblocked by spam filters butmany got through.
They directed people toenter their personal detailson a fake page set up tolook like the official ATOwebsite. When users did so,‘‘key log’’ malware wasinstalled on their computersto access their bankinginformation.
Some 8000 Australiansvisited the phishing website— although it is not clearhow many were actuallytaken in because somepeople click on the linksdeliberately to ‘‘mess with’’the cyber criminals.

Further ‘‘phishing’’attacks hit in the daysfollowing August 30 and,unlike most such scams, theattacks originated fromwithin Australia.

Sophie 11, Lily, 8, Freyja, 7 and Finn, 11 are swapping school for festivals
A COUPLE have taken theirchildren out of school for ayear to travel aroundAustralia and go to festivals.
Kevin and Maddi Parkerand their four kids, Finn andSophie, both 11, Lily, 8 andFreyja, 7, have been tofestivals from Canberra toAlice Springs.
They are now in Darwinafter visiting almost everyTerritory festival in the pastthree months.
Mrs Parker said herchildren had learnt a lot.
‘‘Our four children haveblossomed this year,’’ shesaid. ‘‘They’ve grown inconfidence — not that theywere lacking — and we’reworking well as a team.’’

Mr Parker said they madesome money fromadvertising but mainly it wasa labour of love. The kidsmay have earned moremoney from busking.
Finn earned $80 rappingat Palmerston Festival andFreyja’s first attempt atcountry singing scored hermore than $50.
They were also namedthe junior bog snorkellingchampions at the JuliaCreek Dirt’N’Dust Festival,in Queensland.
Mrs Parker said theBarthulha Webs textileworkshop weekend at theSpringvale Homestead inKatherine had been ahighlight. ‘‘It was such afantastic opportunity for thekids to sit with indigenouswomen and learn to weavewith pandanus leaves andhear their stories,’’ she said.
