In Loving Memory ofVincent (Jim) Giangrosso, Sr.
10/14/33 ~ 6/27/07God saw you were getting tired,
and a cure was not to be.So He put His arms around youAnd whispered, “Come to me.”
With tearful eyes we watched you,And saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly,We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,He only takes the best.

MY GROCER ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Angola Jubilee has awarded its annual My Grocer Scholarship to Kayla Larson, of Angola. Through this scholarship program, participating inde-pendent grocery stores recognize the commitment of high school students to their education and communities. The My Grocer Scholarship Program enables deserving high school seniors in our retail markets to receive a $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of their post-secondary education. Kayla is a 2012 graduate of Mount Mercy Academy and will be attending Mercyhurst University, Erie, PA in the fall majoring in Biology. She is the daughter of Kevin and Mary Ann Larson of Angola. Some of Kayla’s school activities included Student Ambassadors, Student Govern-ment, Varsity Softball, National Honor Society, McAuley Scholars, and Peer Minister Team. She was a recipient of Mercyhurst’s University’s Eagan Scholarship, Athletic Scholarship, McAuley Rose (service award), Warde Rose (leadership award), and was Class of 2012 Top 20. Some of her interests and hobbies include softball, community service, volleyball, and playing cards with friends. The My Grocer Scholarship Program is managed by My Grocer’s Scholarship Committee, which selected the winners. The applicants represented a broad cross section of outstanding seniors from all the markets served by par-ticipating stores, making final scholarship recipient selec-tions difficult. Selections were made based on a variety of considerations, including academic standing, grade-point averages, extra-curricular activities and individual student life challenges. The independently owned and operated My Grocer Scholarship stores actively support this program as a means to strengthen commitments to the communities they serve. Our stores are supplied by SUPERVALU, one of the nation’s largest whole food wholesale distributors. SUPERVALU’s Eastern Region is headquartered in Me-chanicsville, Virginia. TROOP 578 HONORS NEWEST EAGLE SCOUT
On Sunday, May 6, Scouts, scouters, family and friends gathered at Cala’s Kitchen in Derby to hold an Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 578’s newest Eagle Scout, Lucas Vail. The awards ceremony recognized Lucas’s journey through the Scouting program from Tiger Cub through completion of requirements for the Boy Scouts of America’s highest award, which is achieved by fewer than 5% of Scouts. In addition to receiving his Eagle Scout badge and medallion, Luke was presented with a commemorative eagle statuette from Troop 578, as well as a proclamation delivered by Evans Town Supervisor, Keith Dash, which acknowledged his hard work and dedication in attaining the rank of Eagle. Luke’s parents, Frank and Colleen Vail of Brant, were presesnted with lapel pins in recogition of their assistance to Luke, and Mrs. Vail received a rose from her son to especially recognize the important role of his mother in helping Luke to become an Eagle Scout. Personal mementos were also presented in the form of a customized hiking staff from Luke’s Eagle mentor and Godfather, “Uncle”Ken Roth, Michael Vail Sr., brother of current Scoutmaster, Frank Vail III, presented a fleur de lis pin (the symbol of Boy scouts), which had been worn by Luke’s grnadfather, Frank Vail, Jr., the longest serving Scoutmaster in the troop’s 92 year history. The pin will be passed down to future generation in the Vail family when the rank of Eagle is achieved. As the ceremony drew to a close, Scoutmaster Vail reminisced on his time in the Scouting movement. He de-scribed seeing his son achieve the rank of Eagle Scout as his greatest moment ever in more than 40 years as a Scout. Pictured L. to R.: Frank Vail III, Lucas Vail, Colleen Vail.
GROWING TOMATOES IN CONTAINERS Here are a few tips for growing tomatoes in contain-ers- which can work so well for apartments, assisted care residents, busy suburban families and anyone who doesn’t want to dig up the lawn to grow tomatoes!• If you are doing the planting, use good bagged pottingsoil-not dirt out of the yard which may be contaminated. Mix in a handful of bone meal and several handfuls of good compost. Manure may be too strong. A 5-gal. container is perfect and easy to use.• Plant 3 or 4 marigolds with each tomato to help keep bugs away.• Container grown tomatoes should get about 8 hours of full sun.• Most container varieties do not benefit from pruning, but do pinch of suckers growing at a 45 degree angle from the top of another branch.• Stake any branches heavy with fruit so they don’t break.• Do not over-fertilize container tomatoes...it does not leach out as in a garden. A shot every 2 weeks should be sufficient, and stop when it stops blooming.• Containers may need water every day during hot spells.• After big rainstorms, check that container is not water-logged.• Place containers on small blocks off of ground or deck so slugs won’t find a place to hide.• Top water all over foliage in morning so tomatoes have a chance to dry off before nightfall. Water until water comes out the drainage holes, then stop.• Harvest tomatoes often to relieve branches of weight.• Don’t reuse soil from year to year. Always start fresh.• Wash containers and tools with mild bleach soution (10% bleach to 90% water) in the fall before storage. Please join us on a Green Path to leave a positive impact on ourselves, our town and our world. Small changes make a big difference.

EVANS DEMOCRATIC CLUB MEETING The June meeting was postponed since the VFW was closed for parking lot repairs but that didn’t stop the sum-mer activities. The Town of Evans hosted the Southtowns Democratic picnic on June 10th at the Sturgeon Point Ma-rina. Regional and statewide elected officials attended and were impressed by the Marina, which is a jewel in the Town. Congratulations to Angola mayor Howard M. “Hub” Frawley, a longtime advocate for land banking. He was part of the local team that succeeded in creating the joint City of Buffalo/Erie County land bank, one of the first two in the state of New York. This non-profit entity will permit its member municipalities to develop a strategy for dealing with vacant land and structures. The agreement is a notable accomplishment for the administration of County Executive Mark Poloncarz. The Evans Democratic Club picnic will be on Sun., Au-gust 6. It’s official; the primary date will be on September 13. The general election will be on Tues., November 6. Also coming up; the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW.
On Wednesday, June 27th at 7:00 p.m. The Formula Band will open the concert at Angola’s Centennial Park. The evening is sponsored by Chiavetta’s Catering. The Formula group is billed as “Buffalo’s Best Italian Band”. They have played all over Western New York and have also toured in Italy. They play old and new Italian type music- something for everyone. Refreshments are sold at the park by the Brant-Evans Girl Scouts and the Ice Cream man makes a stop at the park. Handicapped parking is off Center and High Streets if you arrive early. Next, week, on Wednesday, July 4th The Rustic Ramblers, playing Classic Country music will be at the park. The evening will be sponsored by the Latimore-Schiavone Funeral Home. The group leader is Dan Zorn of Evans Center. The rain location for all of the concerts is the New Angola Theater. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the evening.

Legend has it that the Menches brothers ran out of their usual pork sausage that hot, fateful day at the fair and turned to local butchers to replenish their supplies. When no pork was available, a butcher suggested ground beef. The Menches brothers purchased the beef, but added secret ingredients, including coffee grounds to create a unique flavor. The hamburger was born!
Burgerfest celebrates the birth of the hamburger at the Hamburg Fair in 1885 and is hosted by the Rotary Club of Hamburg, the Hamburg Rotary Sunrise Club, the Kiwanis Club and the Lions Club. Hamburg held its first Burgerfest in 1985 to mark the100th anniversary of the birth of the hamburger after organizers discovered a history book detailing the burger’s origins. Frank and Charles Menches, vendors who traveled the world’s fair circuit, and who have been credited with also creating Cracker Jacks and ice cream cones, concocted the all-American burger. Descendants of the Menches brothers from Ohio, who remain in the food industry three generations later, have traveled to Hamburg to participate in several Burgerfest celebrations over the years, bringing along the secret recipe. This year, local restaurants will have no Menches competiton as they vie for the title of best hamburger, as local grillers Imagine Hamburg will not participate.
The Town of Hamburg Bicentennial Committee is planning some fun events at Burgerfest this year as the town celebrates its 200th birthday. Planned are the crowning of a centennial king and queen and winner of a beard-growing contest.
Burgerfest is located along Main and Buffalo Streets and in the Village of Hamburg Municipal Parking Lot. The Taste of Hamburg portion of the festival features the favorite offerings of local restaurants, in the parking lot and along Main and Buffalo streets. The one-day festival has something for everyone, from Kidspace children’s inflatable rides and activities; an arts and crafts show and sale, the Rotary Classic Car Show, the LaBatt Beer Tent, a burger-eating contest and the Fourth Annual Hamburg Film Festival at the Palace Theatre. The car show, music with Rock N Roll to the Rescue, the bed race, burger-eating contest, and children’s entertainment will all be situated on Main Street. Kidspace will be located in the parking lot.
BURGERFEST SET FOR JULY IN HAMBURG

PULL OUTGUIDE
As the school year comes to an end, parents everywhere scramble to get a handle on what their children will do or what they, as a family, will do in the summer that lies ahead. As leisure time and outdoor activities increase, also does the need for family vacations, recreation, dining, entertainment , summer camps, etc. With this in mind, we, at the new Angola Pennysaver, have compiled a “soup-to- nuts” guide entitled ‘SCHOOL’S OUT ! ‘
This special section o ers a variety of activities that local residents can take part in locally as well as around Western New York. Plan a family vacation for a week or merely schedule a fun day trip. For either idea, you will need to have a resource of products and services to meet those needs. We have compiled a handy guide of places to go, things to do to make your trip an exciting one. We will help you plan the perfect getaway, whether it’s a day, weekend, or longer. Not only will the section provide information on the destination, but it will help you get you ready for your trip, from preparing your vehicle( car repair, brakes, tires and air conditioning) to caring for your pet(s) while you’re away( kennels, pet day care, etc).
With rising gas prices, perhaps a “stay-cation” is more your style. We have provided a host of ads from businesses that will help you turn your home or backyard into a summer paradise. From swimming pool accessories to patio furniture and barbecue equipment; from decks to sunrooms- we will become your one source for backyard fun.
If your child or children are looking for things to do outside of a family trip, we’ve got you covered there too, with an assortment of summer camps, arts and crafts, recreational activities, etc.
Last but hardly least, we suggest you put safety rst. Safety is on the mind of every parent, especially during the summer season. We’re promoting water and pool safety, sun safety and boat safety.
Finally, feel free to detach this center spread pullout and save it throughout the summer when looking for things to do in our area and beyond. ‘SCHOOL’S OUT!’ We hope that we can help you make the summer of 2012 one you’ll never forget !

Over the last several years, families have increasingly focused on stretching every dollar they have. Rising fuel costs and an economy that is still struggling have inspired many families to permanently adopt a thriftier lifestyle. While it’s good to be fi nancially prudent, families don’t have to give up luxuries like summer vacations. Instead, parents can employ a few simple saving strategies that can reduce the cost but not the quality of a summer vacation with the family. * Find accommodations that provide a kitchen. A signifi cant portion of a family’s summer vacation budget goes toward food. Families will need to eat no matter where they go, but cost-conscious parents should fi nd accommodations that include a private kitchen. You won’t need to eat in every night, but cooking two or three times over the course of a week-long vacation can save a substantial amount of money. If you can’t fi nd a room with its own kitchen, try to fi nd one with its own refrigerator and microwave. * Stay local. Staying close to home for summer vacation can save families a good deal of money. Rising fuel costs have made both driving and air travel
Summer Vacation
more expensive. Finding affordable fl ights has become increasingly diffi cult, especially for families who don’t have the luxury of planning their summer vacation several months in advance. Staying local for summer vacation reduces the need for costly hotel accommodations and saves money on fuel. * Visit a major city or tourist area. For families who simply must get away, keep in mind that the further you go off the beaten path the more costly it will be to get there. For example, a remote locale is likely nowhere near a major airport, and it can be expensive to get from the airport to the resort. In addition, it’s harder to fi nd affordable fl ights to remote locales, as there are typically less fl ights available to such destinations, than fl ights to major cities or more popular tourist destinations. So while vacationing in the middle of nowhere has its benefi ts, cost-conscious families might be better off choosing a destination that’s much more accessible and affordable. Taking a summer vacation is a tradition for many families. This summer, families focused on saving money can do so in a number of affordable ways.

Enjoy your Summer & Stay Safe!
Summertime safety a must this season While summertime is a season to live easy, there are some inherent dangers to summer that can halt plans of fun in the sun. From skin cancer to insect bites, summertime can be dangerous for those who don’t play it safe. ere are a number of potential summertime hazards men, women and children can safeguard themselves against.Sun-Related Injuries While skin cancer and sunburn are the most obvious dangers from the sun, there are other hazards as well. Failure to protect the eyes from UV sun exposure can result in photokeratitis, irreversible sunburn of the cornea. While it may cause temporary vision loss, recurrent incidences of photokeratitis can lead to permanent vision loss as well. Individuals who are exposed to sunlight between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. without UV protection may become sunburned, increasing their risk for skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, this year more than one million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer and about 9,500 people will die from it. Dehydration and heat stroke are other potential hazards. Drinking plenty of water and other hydrating uids (not
diuretics like alcohol) can keep the body cool and refreshed. Headaches, acting angrily, dizziness, and excessive sweating or cessation of sweating may be signs of a serious sun-related health condition.Water Hazards e Maryland CARES Program, which educates health care professionals and the public about pediatric care and safety, o ers that drowning incidents increase 100 percent over the summer months. It takes only inches of water to drown a person, especially a young child. Every year the news broadcasts stories of children who fell into backyard pools or adults swept out to sea by choppy waves. People should never take bodies of water for granted. Swimming only where there is a certi ed lifeguard can make water recreation safer. Individuals should follow the guidelines posted regarding swimming and avoid oceans when storms are brewing because of rip tides and undertows. Children should always be carefully monitored around water. Self-latching gates around pools can help deter entry as well as safety covers or retractable pool ladders. Remember, pool oats and water wings (swimmies) should not be used as a
substitute for a life vest.Wildlife Dangers Just as many people come out of hibernation when the weather warms, so do animals and insect life. Tick bites are common when the weather is warm. Experts say that the months of May, June and July are peak times for exposure to ticks, which may carry Lyme Disease or another dangerous parasite. Ticks are small and can be di cult to spot. People can do a tick check a er coming in from outside, paying careful attention to the areas to which ticks tend to migrate:In ears, in and around the hair, under the arms, behind the knees, around the waist, and between the legs. Mosquitoes, biting ies, bees, wasps, and other insects are in full force. Using an insect repellent can help keep them at bay and avoid bites. In addition to insects, animals like bats, squirrels, raccoons and bears are more active in the warm weather. During the time of dawn and dusk deer may be on the prowl for food before the heat of day. People can pay attention to wildlife when driving, hiking or bicycling to avoid altercations.

Throw a Successful Pool Party
The pool party is a staple of summertime fun. It can tie into a specifi c holiday or an event, such as a birthday party. Or the pool party can be for no reason other than cooling off from the hot weather.
There are a few things you must keep in mind before hosting a pool party. Consider these tips before sending out your invitations.
The Pool
Of course you will need to have a pool to host a pool party. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that you must have one in your backyard. You can plan a pool party at a pool club or your local YMCA as well. However, backyard pool parties are often the most convenient.
When inviting guests, consider the maximum capacity of the pool. While everyone may not be in the pool at the same time, you want to ensure the swimming experience will be safe. Also, having adequate space in the yard is essential. This way those who are lounging outside of the pool can enjoy themselves, too.
In preparation for a pool party, be sure your pool is adequately cleaned.
However, you don’t want to overload the pool with too many chemicals directly prior to the party. Guests’ skin or eyes may become irritated if the pool was recently chlorinated. Plus, chemicals can add a green hue to light-colored hair. Right before the party, vacuum and skim the pool so that any debris or insects can be removed.
Make sure you have some pool toys on hand to enhance the fun. Flotation devices, volleyballs and water guns are good ideas. Just don’t overload the pool with too many items or guests won’t have room to swim.
Refreshments
Swimming is good exercise, and chances are guests will build up quite an appetite after swimming. However, you don’t want to have foods that will be too heavy in the stomach. Lighter fare such as fi nger sandwiches, fruit and vegetables, crackers and dip are better ideas. Reserve greasy food, like pizza or hamburgers, for another occasion.
Make sure you have plenty of beverages on hand, too. Water, juice and iced tea fi t the bill. Steer clear of caffeinated drinks, which can dehydrate. Also,
alcohol and swimming don’t really mix, so avoid alcoholic beverages.
Safety
When planning a pool party, you’ll have to consider safety. Plan to have one or two individuals who will be responsible for lifeguard duties. These people should have their eyes trained on the swimmers at all times. You can hire a private lifeguard or serve as one yourself if you have fi rst-aid and CPR training. Having life jackets on hand or a rescue fl oat is a good idea. Keep a cordless phone handy to dial emergency services should an accident occur.
For younger children, consider setting up a small, shallow pool so they can play safely. This way they won’t get overrun with adults or older children in the main pool.
Activities
Plan on activities that can occur in or out of the water. Pool staples such as diving for rings, Marco Polo and volleyball are always good ideas. Set up a badminton net, water balloon toss, music and other entertainment outside the pool so that there will be fun all around.
According to the United States Coast Guard, in 2009 there were more than 4,700 recreational boating accidents. ose accidents involved nearly 750 deaths. Perhaps most telling, only 14 percent of those deaths occurred on boats where the operator had received boating safety instruction. e importance of precautionary measures when boating is immeasurable, and boaters should heed the following safety advice whenever taking to the water, be it in the ocean or on a nearby lake or river.
* Enroll in a boating skills course. Technology is forever advancing, and boating technology is not immune. ose new to boating should take a safety course before the sailing season begins. Even veteran sailors would be wise to take a boating skills and safety course at least every few years. is can help refresh their memory and keep boaters abreast of the latest technology. Volunteer organizations, including the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadron, and others sponsor many courses, and many state boating agencies also provide classes. To learn more, visit www.uscgboating.org.
* Be mindful of the weather. Driving in bad weather can be dangerous, but boating in bad weather can prove fatal. Be especially mindful of the weather when planning a boating trip. e National Weather Service provides daily boating reports as well as forecasts for the Atlantic and Paci c oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. Sailors should consult these reports before leaving the dock.
* Make sure all boat passengers know how to swim. Surviving a capsized boat is never easy, but it’s nearly impossible for passengers who don’t know how to swim. Make sure all passengers know how to swim before heading out to sea. If it’s been awhile since you have taken to the water, refresh your memory with a
swimming course and make sure passengers are physically capable of swimming.* Do not consume alcohol while operating a boat. e USCG notes that alcohol is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. Sixteen percent of boating deaths listed alcohol use as the leading contributor. Just because you’re on the water does not mean laws no longer apply. It’s illegal to operate a boat under the in uence of alcohol, not to mention considerably unsafe. Passengers might not know the rst thing about operating a boat, so skippers must maintain their sobriety in the case of an accident or a mechanical problem.
* Stock up on life jackets. One size does not t all when it comes to life jackets. Adult-sized life jackets, for example, will not work for children. A child’s life jacket should t snugly and not allow the child’s chin or ears to slip through. Test all life jackets for wear and buoyancy at least once per year, and discard any life jackets that are waterslogged, leaky or faded. Keep extra life jackets aboard just to be safe.
* Protect yourself and passengers from carbon monoxide. Exposure to CO is possible inside and outside the boat. Install a CO detector on the boat and maintain it properly, including checking it before sailing season begins to make sure it’s still functioning properly. It’s especially important to protect yourself and your passengers from CO, as the symptoms of CO exposure are similar to those of seasickness and alcohol intoxication. But prolonged exposure to low concentrations of CO or quick exposure to high concentrations can be fatal.
* Don’t allow swimmers near the boat’s exhaust pipe. Part of the fun of sailing is allowing passengers to take a dip or a swim when the boat has stopped moving. However, never let swimmers swim or wade near the engine’s exhaust pipe. Exhaust from a boat’s engine can be a deadly source of CO. Keep swimmers in sight at all times.

PRACTICEBOATING
SAFETY
1) Supervise kids when playing. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that around 40 percent of all play-ground injuries happen when there is a lack of supervision. Most parents would not let their children swim in a pool unwatched, but they have no qualms about letting the kids climb and slide unsupervised. Children should always be monitored when playing on playground sets.
2) Tailor play spaces. Climbers, like monkey bars, are associated with the greatest number of falls and injuries. Do not include a climbing appa-ratus with a home jungle gym to improve safety. 3) Decrease the height of equipment. It may be tempting to get the tallest structure they sell, but the higher the playset, the further the fall. 4) Routinely check structure connections. Rusted or loose joints and bearings may make swings and other parts of the structure dangerous.
Give the playset a once-over every few weeks to ensure it is still safe to use. 5) Be mindful of kids’ clothing. Avoid clothing with drawstrings on jackets or pants, which can become entangled in play-ground equipment and cause strangulation. 6) Check recall alerts. Sometimes pieces of equipment are recalled due to safety hazards. Routinely search online to see if the playset has been recalled.

With the kids out of school and relaxed hours at the workplace, individuals and families generally nd that summer is the ideal time to plan a getaway. For those who nd they don’t have the funds this year, or simply prefer to stay closer to home, there are likely many di erent local events to enjoy instead.
Many people will be making this summer the year of the staycation. With the average price of gasoline hovering around the $4 mark, according to the AAA Auto Group, you may be among the individuals planning to keep vacation and weekend activities limited to a certain radius around your house. What many people seldom realize is that the warm-weather season is a prime time for local o erings from di erent organizations in the community -- many of which are low-cost and nearby.
O entimes, all it takes is thumbing through the “Where to Go” section of the newspaper to nd a host of di erent community o erings happening in the weeks to come. Chances are your neighborhood is hosting one or more of these di erent types of community events.
* Fireworks display: Whether for Independence Day or just to mark the start of a summer weekend, towns o en host vibrant reworks displays. Coastal towns may have them
at the beach or boardwalk area, while inland areas may have a speci c eld or town center location where they can be observed.
* Carnival: You need not travel to the theme park several miles away to enjoy a bit of chills and thrills. ere may be one or several carnivals taking place nearby this year. Many churches host a carnival to raise funds. ere also may be county fairs that feature their share of thrill rides and carnival test-of-skill games. Of course, the carnival food that goes with the event is also something to look forward to.
* Park activities: From hiking excursions to garden tours, the private or government-subsidized parks may issue an events schedule with many di erent activities. Some have theater under the stars or camp-out movie nights. Others may have wine- and cheese-tasting soirees. ese parks may have exhibition centers that can be visited any time of the year.
* Summer camps: Many childcare centers and other organizations o er summer camp programs. Research this option early on so you can ensure a place for your child should you choose to sign up.
* Food festivals:Towns o en host di erent food festivals where local vendors can put their wares on display and happy residents can sample to their hearts’ delight.
* Concerts:  e summer season
is certainly one for concerts. If you don’t happen to live right near a sports arena or another music venue, you may be able to enjoy local bands at clubs and restaurants. Some towns also have a performance stage where they invite performers to play week a er week. Who knows, your favorite musician may show up for an acoustic or intimate performance night.
* Breakfasts and brunches: Di erent organizations host fundraising food events. e entire family can eat out at a fraction of the cost of going to a restaurant and bene t a good cause in the process.
* Street fairs and block parties: Part of the fun of summer is getting outdoors and socializing in the community. Street fairs with foods on a stick and even neighborhood-based block parties enable you to get together and enjoy a little fun really close to home.
* Tours and parades: Although parades o en coincide with major holidays, some towns host carnival-type parades for the community. Children may be able to ride on a re truck or explore the workings of a police cruiser.
ere are plenty of enjoyable activities that could be taking place right in your own backyard this summer. Consult the newspaper, online bulletins or a community newsletter to keep abreast of the di erent events that may be coming your way.
