5th Grade News Week of January 28, 2019
MATH 5A-This week, the focus will be on numerical expressions. Depending on our expected bitter cold weather, the class may have a quiz this Friday. 5B- The class did a wonderful job on their diocesan assessment last week! This week we are learning about coordinate planes and how to graph points.
LANGUAGE ARTS
5A Reading – We will only have
class three days this week due to
our Catholic Schools Week
activities. We will continue with
our anchor story, Quest for a Tree
Kangaroo. The students will
review cause/effect relationships
throughout the story.
Vocabulary/comprehension test
will be Friday!
5B Reading - This week we are
still focusing on our story, Quest
for the Tree Kangaroo. Due to
catholic school’s week events, we
will not have class Monday or
Tuesday. We are focusing on
vocabulary and cause/ effect this
week. Vocabulary and
Comprehension test on Friday!
5English/Writing – We will only
have class three days this week due to
Catholic Schools Week activities. The
students will work on their persuasive
writings and hopefully complete them
by Friday! The students will identify
main verbs, helping verbs, and linking
verbs. A grammar test will over
these verbs will be on Friday!
RELIGION This week we are working with our prayer buddies to write Valentines for Veterans and letters for our families. In our family life series, we will discuss change in our bodies and moods. Then, we will move on to Unit 3 and discuss how every human life is sacred. We will have an all school Mass on today to celebrate Catholic Schools’ week!
SCIENCE 5th graders are currently
learning about the
important roles of water
to our planet and the
properties of water that
make it so useful. We’ll be
discussing and
demonstrating the
concepts of cohesion,
adhesion, and the polarity
of water molecules.
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week we are finishing
up learning about pilgrims
and puritans. We will start
to learn about the middle
colonies and how the
different types of people
who settled there.

6th Grade News Week of January 28, 2019
MATH 6A- Between Catholic Schools
Week events and expected chilly weather, we will see how much math we can squeeze in! Our next concept will be 2-step equations. 6B- Due to Catholic Schools’ Week, we are not meeting Monday or Tuesday. We will finish up our coordinate planes unit by working on fun activities in groups!
SOCIAL STUDIES
The students will be learning
more about the culture of
Mesopotamia and how the
people created new
technology. On Wednesday,
we will be completing an
activity with our Prayer
Buddies during this time.
LANGUAGE ARTS
6A Reading – Due to Catholic
Schools Week activities, we will
only have class a few days this
week! We will continue reading
our novel, Hoot. The students
will be introduced to the new
vocabulary words. We will focus
on comprehension this week.
6B- We are still reading our novel
Hoot. We are learning about using
context clues to help us predict
what is going to happen next.
New vocabulary words will be sent
home this week. We are focusing
on vocabulary, comprehension,
and inferring. No quiz this week.
6English/Writing – The students
completed their persuasive
writings last week! We will be
working on constructing solid
paragraphs this week. We will
only have class a few times this
week due to Catholic Schools
Week activities!
RELIGION
On Monday, we will be
creating Valentine cards for
our veterans with our prayer
buddies. The students will
continue lessons in our Family
Life book and developing ways
to learn how to express and
appreciate themselves.
SCIENCE
This week, the 6th grade will
be focusing on ways that
erosion and deposition shape
our planet. They have a
vocabulary packet to help
with learning important
terms. There will be a quiz on
these terms soon.
