5 DISHES YOU MUST TRY IN COLUMBIA

One of the best parts of traveling to Colombia is getting to experience its cuisine. It takes its influences from native cultures as well as the Spanish, Arab, and African cultures that have infused with the natives’ over the years. There are 5 dishes that you must try when you visit:

LECHONA

Traditional food most popular in the Tolima region

It’s a whole roasted pig that is stuffed with peas, rice, onions, and spices.

The entire pig is either roasted over an open fire or in a clay oven for 10 hours

AREPAS

This dish is hugely prominent in all regions

Part of the Colombian natives’ every day meals.

Made from ground cornmeal and can be served with butter, corn, or be stuffed with cheese.

Can be eaten as a side dish, but also functions as standalone main .

SANCOCHO

This dish exists in many variations that change based on the region in Colombia.

Is a soup or stew that is made with any regional meat or fish

Always contains cassava, potatoes, and plantains.

It’s a hearty, filling dish that is served all day.

BANDEJA PAISA

Platter of food that contains a mixture of steak, chorizo, chicharron, and a fried egg over a bed of rice.

There can be additions such as platanos, avocado, beans, and even an arepa.

EMPANADAS

Empanadas are found all over Latin America, but change drastically depending on the country

They are pastry pockets full beef, chicken, and/or cheese

In Colombia, they’re fried (instead of baked)
