ROSARY:
Recited each weekday at 8:00 a.m. before
Mass.
Retreat, actually. I will be away this week on retreat. My friend, the
Code of Canon Law, states that clerics, “are equally bound to make
time for spiritual retreats according to the prescripts of particular
law” (Can. 276 §2, 4). The diocese expects a priest to make a yearly
retreat.
Retreat time is not meant to be a “get away from it all” time; it is
meant to be a “get together with God” time. A retreat for a priest is
an expression of the Latin phrase, Nemo dat quod non habet (no one
gives what he does not have). The retreat is meant to be a time for
the priest to be strengthened and renewed so he can serve his people
and the Church better.
I do encourage everyone to take some time for a retreat. Some people
can’t take off a week and head off to a retreat house. If you can,
great! Go! If not, maybe take a day off or an evening a month or an
hour a week to spend on your relationship with God. Turn off the TV
radio, and phone. Enter into some silence. I read a quote from
Trappist Father Thomas Keating, who died recently, “Silence is God’s
first language. Everything else is translation.” Silence helps us to
hear God directly.
I ask for your prayers as I make this retreat from Monday night until
Friday morning. Pray for me, that I may be strengthened and enriched
to serve Holy Spirit Parish and the Church better.
See you next weekend!
Rev. Charles F. Strebler

apply the readings to our daily lives.
At that point we are joined by the RCIA members
