1. 2D Mediums in Artistic Expression
• Mediums are the tools we use to draw, paint, etc...
• Techniques are all of the ways of using these mediums.
• We can combine and mix various techniques and mediums.
• Learning different procedures, techniques and mediums helps us know which is the most adecuate way to express us.
![Page 4: 2d techniques 3rd eso (1)](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042604/568cc69c1a28ab8c668ba73b/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
2. Dry and Wet mediums
YES Those materials that
require a liquid for it’s application (water, oil)
WET MEDIUMS
for painting
•NO •Those materials that do not require a liquid
for it’s application •
•DRY MEDIUMS •For drawing
![Page 5: 2d techniques 3rd eso (1)](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042604/568cc69c1a28ab8c668ba73b/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
2.1. Drawing Mediums Graphite Pencil:
• Pencils can be hard or soft.
– Soft pencils: are used for sketches and to create shading because they allow for more tonalities.
– Hard pencils: used mostly for technical drawings that require more precision.

2.1. Drawing Mediums
Colored pencils:
• Unlike graphite pencils, colored pencils have a wax pigment interior.
• Some colored pencils can be activated with water. They are called watercolor pencils.
• They give the artist great control to make full colors drawings with great detail.
![Page 8: 2d techniques 3rd eso (1)](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042604/568cc69c1a28ab8c668ba73b/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)

2.1. Drawing Mediums
Markers and pens:
• An evolving technique that allows for a range of graphic possibilities in full color.
• First, pencil should be used to make a preliminary sketch. Then, light colors should be applied before darks.
![Page 10: 2d techniques 3rd eso (1)](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042604/568cc69c1a28ab8c668ba73b/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

2.1. Drawing Mediums Charcoal:
• Charcoal is derived from burnt wood.
• It is principally used for… – Making preparatory sketches,
– Creating shading
• Charcoal allows for a range of marks, from lines to a variety of tones of grey.
![Page 12: 2d techniques 3rd eso (1)](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042604/568cc69c1a28ab8c668ba73b/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

2.1. Drawing Mediums Crayons:
• Crayons are derived from pigments and wax.
• Crayons allow for brilliant colorful drawings.
![Page 14: 2d techniques 3rd eso (1)](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042604/568cc69c1a28ab8c668ba73b/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)

2.1. Drawing Mediums Pastels
Pastels are a stick of powdered pigment similar to chalk.
They tend to have a pale color and a very soft texture.
![Page 16: 2d techniques 3rd eso (1)](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042604/568cc69c1a28ab8c668ba73b/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

2.1. Drawing Mediums Collage:
• This technique is the act of pasting photos, papers, objects, drawings on a support.
• The word “collage” comes from the word “paste” in French.
• Picasso and Braque, the cubist artists, were the first to create collages.

2.2. Painting mediums Watercolors:
• Are a transparent medium with which the color is added through layers of water tinted by the paint.
• They can be dry or in tubes.
• It’s important to use paper with a coarse (rugoso) texture so that it can absorb some of the water.
• This technique can be combined with crayons or tape to create different visual effects.

3. Printmaking techniques • Prints are created by stamping or imprinting a plate
(plancha).
• Printmaking is the art form with allows us to make multiple repetitions of the same image.
• There are many different types of printmaking, like relief printing, intaglio printing, or monoprinting.

The steps… Draw a life-size mask shape, like this one:
Draw lightly, in pencil, some designs, like these:
![Page 38: 2d techniques 3rd eso (1)](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042604/568cc69c1a28ab8c668ba73b/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
The steps… Color some areas with crayon.
Next, paint other areas with watercolor. What happens with the watercolor and the crayon together?
